Overall, one of the lightest of Port Huron ' s better teams over the years, the ' 53 Reds made up for it with speed and sharp charging in the line. In scoring 288 points, the Big Reds rushed for 38 touchdowns and passed for five. There were two field goals kicked and the extra point was made 24 times. The Reds picked up a net 2,452 yards running, to 628 by the nine opponents. In passing, the Big Reds conceded on edge; 413 yards to 438 for the opponents. Bob Boyd, Dave Winfield, and A1 Davis topped the one-hundred mark in total carries, and all averaged better than five yards per crack. Davis was the team ' s top scorer with 101 points on 12 touchdowns, 24 conversions, and two field goals; the first kicked by a local player since 1930. Winfield scored 11 touchdowns. Handicapped by inexperience, lack of height, and injuries, the 1953-54 Big Reds won only three games while dropping fourteen. When Dick Daly and Ray Wilkens graduated after the first eight games, Lyle McAuley was left as the only letter winner from the last year. Then in the ninth game, Lyle suffered a sprained ankle and was out for the next three weeks. However, this team accomplished a win in the opening round of the State Regional tournament. Lapeer was the victim. This is the first game a Port Huron team has won in the tourna- ment in the past three years. Seniors Jack McDonald, John Thomas, and Paul Heald finished their careers against Saginaw Arthur Hill in the tournament at Flint. Jack was a sensational long-shot artist and play maker deluxe with his sharp and fancy passes. John developed the spirit of the team and developed into one of the leading scorers. Paul Heald contributed one of the highest shooting averages per game. He was exceptional with his shots from the corner of the court. Jack and John were named honorary Co-Captains at the season ' s end. At the Winter-Sports Banquet on March 16, Dick Daly was named winner of the Rotary Award symbolic of the outstanding basketball player of the year. Dick contributed 105 points in the eight games he played and was an outstand- ing floor leader. John Thomas received the Clarence Phare trophy in recog- nition of his grand sportsmanship during the year. Always first to congratulate his opponents, co-operation with coaches and teammates, and a great fighting spirit whether in the game or on the bench, were some of the qualities John contributed to earn this award. Letter winners for the season were Don Capps, Ed Rankin, Dick Turner (all Sophomores) Clarence Cureton, Roger Hanton, Lyle McAuley, Jerry Mc- Clure, Marvin Schott (all Juniors) Paul Heald, Jack McDonald, John Thomas, and Dick Daly (all Seniors). The tenth grade team also won three games during the year. Gaylord Forbes and Carl Chandler were high scorers with others turning in good play during the year. Sherman Jennings and Jim Rhadigan won awards as student managers of the team for the year. TRACK The year ' s track team finish- ed the season with six losses and one win, but four of the losses were very close. At the Regional meet they placed third. Cap- tain Albert Rus- sell scored at the State Meet as well as being top scorer on the team.
