The story took place in a rented New York home. Cornelia Van Gorder, an elderly spinster, delighted in solving mysteries. Her maid, Lizzie, provided just the right touch of comedy. Dale and Brooks supplied the romance and excitement while the country doctor was adding suspense. Reginald and Richard made things more complicated. The butler’s fierce looks toward the two detectives was something to behold. The Unknown Man, not Anderson, proved to be the real detective. ST. 10UIS” ' S On March 20 and 21 , the June Class i °f 1953 presented their Senior Play, Meet Me In St. Louis. Sally Benson wrote the novel on which the three -act comedy, written by Perry Clark, is Meet Me In St. Louis is the story of an average American family in 1904 ... but what a family the Smith family is! I When father, Mr. Smith, is pro- moted to his company’s New York office, his family rebels and refuses to leave. The schemes cooked up by the four daughters to keep their father in St. Louis, plus the glamour and excitement of the World’s Fair and the predicaments in which Mrs. Smith, Mr. Smith, and their children are involved provide an unbeatable combination for laughs and tears galore. All’s well that ends well and after a trolley is derailed, Mr. Smith is fired, Agnes gets into the cooking Sherry, and Mr. Dodge and Mr. Duffy are drenched with water bombs, a happy ending is in store with the Smith family remaining in their hometown and father receiving a promotion in his home office. Our Baseball Team finished the season with a fifty-fifty record, winning six and losing six. The last game of the season brought the Big Reds together in a clash with the Maples of Birmingham. The teams went in that game tied for the league lead, each having a record of three wins and one loss. Birmingham staged a last- inning rally and won an eight-to-se ven victory over the Bigs Reds. This turned the tide and the team wound up in a two-way tie for second place with Hazel Park. One of the most memorable events of the season was the trip to Flint and the opportunity of playing at Atwood Stadium. Few center fielders ever did a better job in that park than Fred Albert. Captain Harry Kerr took individual honors by having the best pitching record, four victories and the highest batting average, .371. The football season of 1952 was another glorious affair for the Port Huron Big Reds. They went through their second undefeated season in succession and in doing this uncovered some very fine football players. They were led by four great leaders in Tom Anderle, who played a Right End and was a Co-Captain, Jim Dickinson, a Quarter-back who has been a varsity Quarterback three years and also a Co-Captain and Charles Hazely, a Right Halfback who also earned his third letter in football. The other outstanding leader was Frank Moeller, who distinguished himself by having the best average in the ball-carrying department. Tom Anderle made several All-State teams and Jim Dickinson and Charles Hazely were chosen on some. Several other boys did a great deal in making our season a success. They were: John Fuller, a Right Tackle and an exceptionally good player on offense; John Anderle, a Center was outstanding as an offensive and defensive player; Alex Haynes contributed a great deal toward opening holes for our backs and was an offensive Guard; Roger Popham played al- most all of our defensive football at the Right End position; Willard Noble was one of our outstanding defensive guards; Big George Wilson contributed a great deal to the ball club both offensively and defensively as a tackle; Bill Dalton was an offensive Left End who came a long way this year. Some of the other boys who did not play so much but definitely aided us at times through- out the season were: Jerry Dunsmore, Bob Backhurst, Dick Colgan, and Bill Jacobson. Frank Brabaw would have been a great aid but was injured early in the season and was un- able to participate during the year. Many Juniors played a part in our success but only two are coming back next year that have played a great deal of football. They are the Co-Captains for next year’s team Jack Bradley, a Guard, and Alfred Davis, a Fullback. 89 FRONT ROW, LEFT TO RIGHT: Dick Daly, Paul Heald, Ray Wilkens, Frank Moeller, Gary Zink, Tom Anderle, John Fuller, Lyle McAuley, John Anderle. Coach, Bob Hayes; Jerry Gutchess, Mgr; Sherman Jennings, Mgr; A1 Mudgridge, Mgr; Head Coach, Reed Laughlin. The Big Red basketball team got away to a slow start in the Eastern Michigan League but came back strong to finish in a second- place tie with Ferndale. Three teams gained decisions over them in the first round but only the league champion East Detroit was able to win from them the second time and this win was by a slender 65 to 63 margin. In non- league games Port Huron won from Midland and Toledo Waite while losing to Flint North- ern, Pontiac, and Grosse Pointe. They were assigned to the Flint Regional tournament where their first round opponent. Flint Central, had to break scoring records before sub- duing them 84 to 74. Although winning only eight of sixteen games the team set a number of records for the year. Their 79 points against Ferndale was the highest score recorded between the two. Their 58 point per game average tops all previous Port Huron teams and the 158 point total in the Flint Central game was the highest total registered by two teams in a Flint Regional tourney. Frank Moeller broke the individual game scoring record by scoring 27 points in the Hazel Park game and then equaling that production in the following Ferndale game. He also now holds the average points per game record for a season ' s play. Over the year he scored 274 points for a 17. 1 average per game. For this scoring ability Frank was awarded the Rotary trophy symbolic of the team ' s outstanding player. Tom Anderle, playing the season as a guard, was presented the Phare award given annually to the player displaying the best sportsmanship and team-playing ability. If records were kept as to the number of times a player was responsible for helping others score because of passes to them, Tom would be far in front of all others. The other guard John Fuller was named honorary Co- captain along with Frank Moeller, Gary Zink at center and Dick Daly at forward contributed over 100 points a piece during the season. John Anderle, Lyle McAuley, and Ray Wilkens also won letters because of outstanding contributions in the games. Jack McDonald, John Thomas, Paul Heald, and Alfred Davis completed the varsity squad. ' Phe reserve squad slso started slow, they finished strong to earn a 6 to 9 lost record. SWIMMING TEAM SITTING, LEFT TO RIGHT: Paul North, Bob Brown, Ron Clark, Lee Smith, Don Colgan, Bob Arnold. MR. F. L. RIGGIN Here it is, with his reply--the result of an opinion survey of the Port Huron High School senior class. WHAT THIS AD IS ALL ABOUT: Wanting to support the high school yearbook with advertising and to use the space in the best interest of the graduating Seniors, we asked them to voluntarily answer a questionnaire reading , What is the one question you would most like to ask the president of a company like Mueller Brass Co. The most popular question in composite form, was: Q. WHAT QUALIFICATIONS DO I NEED TO GET A JOB AND ADVANCE IN IT? Three important qualifications, it seems to me, will determine your success in getting a job and advancing in it. A. FIRST, is the matter of attitude: -the belief that it is more important to seek opportunity rather than security. -a confidence in one’s ability to progress under our economic system. -a willingness to do your best at any given job. -a readiness to assume the responsibilities that come with advancement. -a wholesome enthusiasm for your job, your company, your community, and your companions. SECOND, is the matter of character: -a loyalty to your employer and your fellow -worker s . -a combination of decency, sportsmanship, honesty, and integrity that all go to make up moral soundness. FINALLY, is the matter of ability: -an ability to get along with people. Your progress on any job will depend to a large extent on your ability to work with others and get others to work with you. -an ability to clearly express ideas to others. Learn to speak and write well. No matter what your regular job may be, good communication will help you in the life-long job of selling yourself. -an ability to recognize and do the things that need doing. The initiative to get things done without constant supervision, and the desire to find better ways of doing them. -an ability that comes with education and training in a specific job. Keep on with your education. Don ' t pass up any opportunity to make yourself the best man available for your job and the next better one. These, my young friends, are in my opinion the qualifications you need to get a job and advance in it. I wish for each of you the success that can be yours if you want it and work for it.
