May it bring back happy memories of your high school days. “A man with knowledge, but without energy, is a house furnished, but not inhabited; a man with energy but no knowledge, is a house dwelt in, but unfurnished.” John Sterling Ihe 1950 SIIIDIIII SlAff Business Manager Photographers Artist Sports Editors James Durand Willard Blackney James Watson Donald Chatterson Robert Stoner Richard Johnson Mary Lou Bonadio Jessie Lee Kelly Eunice Ruff Delores Schultz Rhoda Brooks Margaret Trace Marilyn Boucher Sondra Lee Edmondson Marilyn T reat Betty Smith Betty Farris Bob Durand Betty Lou Fitzner Helen Kertes Karren Brown Shirley Jackson Bonnie Boise Elizabeth Madill Elaine Bond Dondra Cataline Anna Belle Whittaker Virginia Docherty Carol Vogel Marilyn Maclnnes Bob Osontoski FOREWORD The 1950 STUDENT Staff is proud to present this book to the student body. May the pleasure which you have from looking at its pages both now and in future years be as great as the pleasure which we had in its preparation. The student body and faculty members of Port Huron High School were deeply grieved at the untimely death of Miss Geraldine Turner who had been on the teaching staff in the commercial department of the high school since 1925; she had served as head of the departmeht since 1942. Port Huron High School has lost a capable teacher and a grand personality. Those who have recently been under Miss Turner’s guidance and have known her friendship will feel a great personal loss. Many who have gone out from this school to take their places in other communities will recall with humble reverence the kindly, patient teacher who inspired them toward a greater and more contributory life. 10 pR I NC I PAL 1 ' Mr. Tomlinson Advisor January 195 ° Class Miss Teachout Girls ' Counselors Miss Kean and Miss F. E X I OKS FUEWEII TO SENIORS that was set for you probably twelve or more years ago. These have not been easy years in every sense, but we hope they have been happy years. We hope that you will cherish the friendships made with students and teachers while you were in school and will recognize in future years the contri- butions of these friendships to your appreciation of living after your school days are over. We will watch with pride your achievements in the coming years, and I am sure that we shall feel many moments of satisfaction when we see some of you distinguishing your- selves in professions, businesses or industry. If you will always be proud of yourself, we will always be proud of you. So we say success to each of you. The best wishes of your teachers at Port Huron High go with you through many years of health and happiness. 16 JANUARY CUSS OF 1950 - Y f I I I — L - |‘ i SALLY AIKMAN I Wonder What ' s Become or Sally? WASHING! GN TRIP They ' re off! A GROUP OF ADMINISTRATORS LOOK THE SITUATION OVER. Hello, Sue? I just got in from our trip. Oh, yes — it was terrific. Do you have a few minutes? I ' ve got a LOT TO TELL YOU. WE LEFT AT 3 A.M. TUESDAY AND ARRIVED IN WASHINGTON S ' X HOURS LATER. IT WAS THE FIRST PLANE RIDE FOR THE MAJORITY OF US AND TURNED OUT TO BE QUITE A THRILLING EXPERIENCE . |T CERTAINLY WASN ' T LONG BE- FORE WE WERE ON A BUS BOUND FOR MOUNT VERNON, THE FIRST STOP ON OUR TOUR. WE ARRIVED AT ARLINGTON NATIONAL Cemetery in time to see the guards change at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier. Then we visited Lincoln Memorial and the Congressional Library where we met Drew Pearson. Other important places we visited that day were Alexandria, Christ Church, George Washington masonic Memor i al, Washi ngton Cathedral and the Franciscan Monas- tery. At midnight a weary group was happy to settle down to bed. It wasn ' t AS EASY AS WE HAD ANTICIPATED TO GET UP AT 6:30 THE NEXT MORNING IN SPITE OF THE FACT THAT THERE WERE EQUALLY AS EXCITING PLACES TO SEE. OUR PLANS INCLUDED THE CAPITOL BUILDING, JEFFERSON MEMORIAL, THE Foreign Embassies, White House and the Blair House. We had lunch at the Supreme Court Building and later saw THE COURT IN SESSION. THE TOUR WAS COMPLETED BY SEEING THE WASHINGTON MONUMENT AND THE SMITHSONIAN INSTITUTE; THEN CAME DINNER AND A MOVIE. Another day — another full schedule. This morning the line up was Lincoln Museum, Ford Theatre, the Federal Bureau of Investigation and lunch at O ' Donnell ' s Seafood Place. Then we saw the Bureau of Printing and En- graving and the Aquarium in the Commerce Building. Tom Hicks and Tony Bonadio entertained the public with THEIR IDIOT MASKS AND MRS. POSEY ' S COAT. NEXT DESTINATION — HOME. WE HAD COKES AT THE AIRPORT AND BOARDED A BIG PASSENGER PLANE. We ' ll always remember our thrilling trip. It was the most fun-packed three days we ' ve experienced in a LONG TIME. I ' ll SEE YOU SOON AND SHOW YOU ALL MY PI CTURES. MOTHER ' S CALLING ME, SUE . I LL SEE YOU THIS EVE- NING. STUDENT STAFF Ron Taylor Ed i tor Mr. Rantanen dv i SOR Joanne Howse Assistant Editor Well, here we are! Uh-Huh — the group that you can hold responsible for putting out this book. That was QUITE A STRUGGLE AT TIMES, WE WILL ADMIT. BUT WORKING UNDER OUR EDITOR, RON TAYLOR, AND ASSISTANT EDITOR, Joanne Howse, we saw it through. Many companies desired to print our book this year. We finally made the decision concerning a publisher AND WERE SOON ABLE TO BEGIN OPERATIONS. THEN CAME THE ADVERTISING CAMPAIGN WHICH CAUSED EVERYONE IN THE CLUB TO MEANDER ALL OVER THE CITY. OTHER MONEY RAISING IDEAS WERE THOUGHT OF AND CARRIED OUT--SELLING CONCES- SIONS AND A GRAND-SLAM BARN DANCE. REMEMBER THOSE COSTUMES THAT CAROL VOGEL AND BUD BLACKNEY DONNED FOR THE ADVERTISING OF THAT PARTY? REGULAR HICKS FROM THE BLACK HILLS, THEY WERE. In THE 3rd HOUR CLASS a LOW MUMBLE WAS QUITE OFTEN HEARD IN ONE CORNER - REALLY NOTHING THOUGH. |T WAS only a Latin Class going on. Eunice Ruff, Elaine Bond, Shirlee Jackson, Marlyn MacInnes and Dandra Cataline ALL PARTICIPATED. Eunice, when not in. the above mentioned group, was working on the January Senior write-ups with Mary Lou Bonadio, Delores Schultz and Jessie Lee Kelley. Pretzie 1 ' Boucher and Margaret Trace did the June Class write-ups and our note-worthy Virginia Docherty took care of the Music Department. We didn t see much of Don Chatterson but his art work always made our efforts appear in a better light. One thing about Dick Johnson is certain, Dick and economics class don t agree too well. Why all the SUDDEN CONCERN 3RD HOUR, DlCK? And before we forget, we want to thank our two sterling photographers, Bud Blackney and Jim Skip Wat- son. Mutual thanks are extended to the efforts of Jim Durand the treasurer of our poor treasury. Elizabeth Mad ill seemed to do any work that a fellow staff member gave her but always wound up in the CAFETERIA. Ah YES 1 . WEREN T THOSE CHOCO-POPS GOOD. TWO OTHER STAFF WORKHORSES WERE BETTY SMITH AND HELEN Kertes . Let s see— —what did Bob Osontaski do? Oh yes, that s it — yes, that s it! However, Bob certainly sold THE ADS., WHILE BOB STONES WORKED ON SPORTS. In CLOSING, DON 1 T LET US FORGET THAT GRAND CHRISTMAS PARTY AT SANDRA L. EdmONDSON S HOUSE. A GOOD TIME WAS HAD BY ALL, AND PARDON US WHILE WE SWELL WITH MODEST PRIDE AT THE OUT-COME OF THIS ANNUAL. Marilyn Treat and Betty Lou Fitzner performed various tasks in an excellent manner. In fact everyone ON THE STAFF, AT ONE TIME OR ANOTHER, CONTRIBUTED TO THE CAUSE. Special thanks go to Mr. K. A. Surely all students of P.H will agree that the Light- house staff did a terrific j ob this year even though they worked under poor conditions. Their room was converted into a teacher’s lounge, you know. They have carried on the printed papers, something that was started just last year. They started something new, too--the idea of selling the papers by subscrip- tions. Truly new is the fact that it is a journalism class now in which the students are graded. And don’t forget the fact that the paper has increased in size this year. Ten pages is the minimum number. The Lighthouse is under the leadership of Mr. Bower and has as its capable editor, Mary Ann Alexander. Betty Smith and Iris Newcomb are Assistant Editors; Social Editor, Lucille Meismer; Boys Sport Editor, Jerry Ruff; Girls ’Sport Editor, Bertie Ann Stevens and Feature Editor, Bill McColl. Lynn Edwards and Mary Jane Trace are proof readers. 75 MAJORETTES The majorettes have done some outstanding work this year, marching mainly at football games and parades. The friendly bickering between girl-shy Tom, and lady’s man Oke, (who loves the girls), kept the play moving right along with laughs galore . Eve ryone should take special notice of Alfred Tennyson Murgatoyd who writes blank verse. Birdie La Verne is another one who should draw attention, she’s quite a gal. Asma will find a special spot in everyone’s heart. Who could be so hard- hearted as to not feel sympathetic towards an industrious woman who was relegated to a common maid? However, you would sympathize with Tom Arsdale, (Jerry Sanford), who is so Girl Shy that he fakes an engagement just so he won’t have to date his favorite allergy Sylvia Webster, who is splendidly portrayed by Mary Lou Bonadio. Sylvia is consoled by the poetic genius, Alfred Tennyson Mur- gatoyd. Alfred is brilliantly portrayed by J ohn Cheney. It is a mystery that leaves one breathless with suspense and gasping with surprise until the final denouement is reached. The pro- duction of this play by the June graduation class stimulated everyone and produced a lot of fun for those who tried to solve the intricate plot. This play proved to be a whirlwind of excitement, for within the play a murder was almost committed, a kidnapping took place, and members of the cast were thrown into a state of panic. The play was directed by Miss Doro- thy Barrett. She was assisted by the stu- dent director, Joan Heyer. The cast included: Joan Heyer Miss Fielding Bonnie Boise ....
