Text from Pages 1 - 68 of the 1943 volume: “
In these perilous times we are expected to do our part toward win- ning the war. This is a tremendous task, but we will be faced with one which is even greater after the war- that of winning the peace. It will be our duty— the youth of America — and we are now preparing for our part in America’s future. We, the staff, present the 1943 Student as our contribution toward VICTORY. THE STUDENT Mr. Tomlinson We, the class of 194-3, have some- thing in common with Mr. Tomlinson; we entered high school together. He has accomplished much in the way of improve ments for the school. In addition he has made our stay at Port Huron High School more interesting and enjoyable. All we can say is, Thank you, Mr. Tom- linson. Mr. Crull Mr. Crull, Superintendent of schools in Port Huron, has proven his capability and friendliness on many occasions. He has been a real inspiration to the stu- dents of Port Huron High School--no greater tribute could we give him. Miss Meehan The class of January, 1943, was fortunate to have Miss Catherine Meehan for adviser. The students of the January class will long remember her for her kindness and expert supervision. Miss Kean Miss Ellen Kean was the very capable adviser of the June cl-ss. She has a special place in our hearts for her kindness and friendly spirit. Through her management the class en- joyed a successful hi?h school career. r TW. STT ' iDTOT Mr. Bond This is a picture of the new physics teacher and he seems to be well liked by all his students . Miss Rice She is a new addi- tion to the staff of teachers, but she caught on auickly and Is doing a swell job of teaching chemistry. Mr. Batka Mr. Batka is the in- structor of the rrarratics club and is directing the Senior Play as efficiently as always. Mr. Elackney This is no new face to most of us, but he is teaching something new to us. Calisthenics is his speciality now and he is showing them how it is done r3 ht • Mr. Phillips Mr. Phillips is now serving in the Army as a sargeant. He used to be our biology teacher, but the Army got him as it gets all good men. Mr. Carter Mr. Carter is an- other one of the new members of the faculty. He is the new machine drawing instructor and is really doing all right. FREEMAN DEN TEL With the passing of Freeman Dentel the teachers of Port Huron lost one of their most earnest workers. In the eighteen years that he was a member of our teaching staff he was an ardent sup- porter of the Teachers Club, actively serving on several of their committees. At the time of his death Mr. Dentel was president of the Faculty Men f s Club. He was head of the High School Commercial Department and through his guidance and advice, the department has become one of the finest and most practical in the system. Mr. Dentel was school treasurer for the High School and gave voluntarily many hours to the detailed bookkeeping. To the student body Mr. Dentel was known as an excellent teacher of shorthand, typewriting, commercial law bookkeeping, and economics. He was also a familiar figure at the athletic contests for he was in charge of ticket sales at the gate. He commanded the respect of all who knew him. To Mrs. Dentel and family we express our deepest sympathy. Frank Secory came to Fort Huron as football coach and social science teacher. With eight lettermen back and last year’s reserves, the Red- Whites took a tough Roseville team into camp 14-0. The feature of the game was a sixty-yard run with an intercepted pass by Jack Campbell. The team lost Harry Vigrass with a broken leg; Playing against Ferndale in a drizzling rain, Port Huron again emerged victorious 13-0. In this game both Chuck Myron and Jack Conklin returned punts for touchdowns. Before a Grand Trunk Field packed with rooters, the Secroymen nearly edged out a champion Ann Arbor eleven. A Myron to Cotton pass connected, but the extra point was missed. The hard charging Red-White line had Ann Arbor’s crafty offensive bottled up until the last three minutes when Ann Arbor’s back broke loose with a 30-yard dash, and the conversion was successful. The team not only lost the game, but also lost quarter-back Conklin with a broken leg. Against Mt. Clemens, the Port Huron eleven was outplayed in the first half and although they played the pants off the Bathers the conversions were missed and the Red and Gray won again 13-12. Jackson came to town with a team slated for a championship and took us into camp with a 27-6 triumph. The boys came out of their slump with a 7-0 decision over Hazel Park. As a result of a blocked punt recovered by Captain Dave Cruickshank, the Red-Whites came home with their victory. In the final game against Grosse Pointe, Port Huron won 19- 6 . THE STUDENT Basketball On December 4, our traditionally good basketball team toppled East Detroit 38-23 to win its first game. The following week they were nosed out 17-16 by a good Flint Northern team. Ford Trade was the victim of the Red ' s revenge in the next game 31-26. Then our boys held a widely celebrated Toledo Waite team to 20 points while making 39 points themselves. Port Huron took the next three games by defeating Hazel Park 35-18, Femdale 20-11, and Toledo Llbbey 19- 18. After defeating our bitter rivals, Mt. Clemens, by a score of 36-16, we left the country to defeat London, Ontario, 32-20. At Grosse Pointe the boys lost some of their stuff, dropping the game 38-24. They recovered in time to whip Mt. Clemens the following week by the same score reversed, 38-24, without the services of their ace center, Jack Dobratz, who graduated in January. The Reds last setback was suffered at Hazel Park, 32-20, after which the Roaring Reds went on to finish the season by eliminating Femdale 28-24 and Ford Trade 36-21. The Clarence Phare Memorial Trophy given annually to a member of the basketball team for outstanding sportsmanship and love of the game was presented to Charles Whipple. Whipple, a two letter winner, was high point man for the season and an excellent defensive man. Be- sides this he has been active on all school affairs and is president of the Honor Society. Letters were awarded to Captain Roy French, Captain-elect-Fred Phare, Whipple, Walt Oorte, Bob Schlitts, Jack Dobratz, Ken Ingerson, Milton Brown, Bob Buntrock, and managers A1 Phare, John MacDonald and Jim Draper. This year only the Regional Tournaments were held which Port Huron played at Femdale. The Reds took the first game against Femdale 24-18, and went on to defeat Royal Oak 32-28. Then they played their best performance against Pontiac 29-9. THE STUDEMT Baseball For the first time in several years, the Port Huron High School baseball team was not coached by Willard Blackney who was busy with the physical fitness program. He was replaced by Frank Secory, former major leaguer. Because of wartime difficulties the Red-White nine this year played an abbreviated schedule of two games each with Marysville, St. Stephen, Roseville, Ford Trade, and one game with East Detroit. With only John Wirtz, Walt Peck, and Bud Hodge back from last year ' s nine, Coach Secory in two weeks time selected the following team: Lawson, second base; Phare, short stop; Wirtz, right field; Peck, center field; Smith, second base; Killer, first base; Myron, left field; Badley, catcher; and Hodge, Wakeen, and Davis, pitchers. JAMES DRAPER Although he was an under- classman, the senior class of 1943 pay tribute to Jim Draper. He was the capable basketball manager up to the time of his death, and an excellent student. Jim will long be remembered by everyone who knew him for his cheerful smile, his friendliness, and his sportsmanship.
