The STUDEDT Class of ’42 RDmimsTRiiTion Although he is quite new to us. Mr. Crull is already very well-liked. He has proved his capability and has shown a co-operative and friendly spirit. We are sure the classes of the future will enjoy their associations with Mr. Crull. Mr. Tomlinson has been the best of good fellows and his fair play and good humor have won the admiration and respect of each of us. He has taken a great interest in everything and has done much to promote activities which have made our school life more enjoyable and interesting. The June class was a very large one; however, Mr. Phillips managed it well. The co-operative spirit of the class and A1 s willingness to “roll up his sleeves and pitch in” has made all class func- tions very successful, both financially and socially. Miss Laura Moore was the very capable advisor of the January class. T hrough her effort the small class en- joyed a successful High School career topped by a splendid graduation. Orchids to Miss Moore for her excellent job of managing. Here you see on left, Miss Hyde, Music Director and home room super- visor going over attendance records in her office. On right is Miss Seibert, guidance director and home room super- visor, snapped amid a pile of papers during a busy day. This picture shows Mr. Straffon, in a characteristic pose as he leads our fine band. Two prominent members of our English department. Miss Hoffmeyer and Miss Ballentine were snapped at work. Miss Hoffmeyer tries vainly to clear up the puzzling punctuation situ- ation with a pretty smile. Miss Ballen- tine is caught posting more Shakes- pearean material for her English Lit. students. ♦ Miss Turner corrects papers, prob- ably a shorthand test. Here you also see Miss F. Moore, Cafeteria Manager and Foods instructor, making out the next day’s menu, listing all those good things to eat that so many students have enjoyed throughout the year. “Al’ Phillips obliges our camerman for this full shot. Note the unusually serious expression on his face. Walt Turton, assistant coach and football broadcaster, was snapped amid an excit- ing broadcast. Walt handles all of the athletic events over WHLS. Mr. Lester Reynolds, pictured here in the Shop, is now a member of Uncle Sam’s Navy. He taught in Port Huron High School for two years. Mr. Mont- gomery also is pictured in the Shop. He’s probably thinking about that boat trip he ' s going to take in his fine ship this summer. SENIORS Abraham. Ted Adams. Verna Ainsworth. Bettijean Art. Bowling, G. A. A.. Under the splendid direction of George Batka they produced Thorton Wilder’s “Our 1 own. The accompanying pictures were taken at rehearsal. We see here “Papa” Jack Gibbs, “Mother” Dot Dobratz, and “Daughter” Betty Adams in a characteristic family pose. “Dad” Don Schultz “reads the riot act” to Maynard North. In the center of the page we see the poster used to advertise the play in the main hall. LeRoy VanValkenburg and Dot Dobratz relax between acts. John Boukamp peddles his milk to Jean Anderson and in the bottom shot Betty and Maynard converse out of their up- stairs windows. This play required a large and effici- ent technical staff and that staff deserves to be congratulated on the fine job they did. KTHIaETICS Foot ball In ’41 the Port Huron High School Football team, better known as the “Big Reds,” started the season with a “bang” by taking Harbor Beach into camp 34 to 0. The Reds showed a powerful line and a fast backfield. The next opponent was a strong Pontiac High eleven. Pontiac, cashing in on several breaks, defeated us 26 to 0. Then our team traveled to Ferndale and there the “Reds” suffered a 1 5 to 0 defeat at the hands of Lincoln High. On October 10, in a quagmire of mud, we met our long traditional foes, the Mount Clemens High School. Al- though the Port Huron boys showed up well, Mount Clemens carried home the little brown jug to the tune of 8 to 0. A very tough foe was met when P. H. H. S. journeyed to the Prison City to meet the Jackson High eleven. Fail- ing to stop Jackson’s all-state halfback, we suffered our fourth straight defeat. Jackson 14, P. H. 0. Against Hazel Park the team showed up better as they held the Parkers to 19-19 tie. It was a see-saw affair with the lead changing hands several times. In our annual game with the Sarnia Collcgiates the lads finally broke into the win column as they gained an 8-0 victory in this international affair. On November 8, we wound up our regular season with a smashing 33 to 0 victory over the Grossc Pointe gridders. The boys showed strength in every department. As a traditional wind-up. the Seniors played the Underclassmen. This game ended in a scoreless tie. So with three wins, one tie, and four losses, Port Huron showed it was on its way back to the football heights. Here we have some “shot’ ' picked up by our photographer as he wandered about Grand Trunk park last fall. The two pictures are of the Mount Clemens game in which our mud-smattered war- riors went down to defeat. Some of the feminine fans watch the game care- fully, while McNeice, Rowell, and Smith give out with a little horseplay. Our ex-principal M. Clemenson, who is now at Grossc Point, joined Mr. Tomlinson for the Grosse Pointe-P. H. contest. Mr. Tomlinson had his chance to crow this year and get even for what happened last year. Our cheerleaders were caught as they relaxed between yells. Several girls were snapped vainly cheering the team on. V Basketball When our basketball team is under The record: discussion all we have to say is. “look Port Huron at the record.’’ This past season we had twelve wins and two losses during the 23 Grand Rapids — 17 regular season. Under the leadership of 20 Flint Northern — 13 Coaches “Brick” Fowler and Carl 37 East Detroit — 14 Steinborn and Captain Bill Truscott the 44 Hazel Park — 32 Red-Whites took on everything and 45 Ferndale — 1 6 anything and came out on the long end of the score most of the time. 25 Mount Clemens — 29 The Clarence Phare Memorial is 39 Ford Trade — 27 given to the boy who plays the game 28 Grossc Pointe — 27 to the best of his ability and with a 41 Toledo Waite — 35 fine display of good sportsmanship. 39 Mount Clemens — 24 According to ‘‘Brick’s” estimation this past season George Mosure of the class 32 Hazel Park — 26 of ’42. comes closest to this standard. 20 Ferndale — 1 8 George gave his all to the team and to 36 Ford Trade — 38 his school. 30 Toledo Libby — 28 In these action shots we notice Don Schatzline, Port Huron’s “All-State contribution, posed for a free throw. A scramble for the ball i iderneath the basket, and a center jump were snapped as Port Huron went on from victory to victory. In the center picture, Captain Bill Truscott, who was a fine leader and sportsman, was caught about to try a long one. At lower left we have flashy Bob Hobden about to sink a free toss and at right the combination of Truscott, Dobratz, Toth (Captain-elect) , and Mosure show that “they shall not pass attitude that lent much to our success. Golf The golf squad pictured here is with- out a doubt one of the finest in Port Huron High School’s history. Several of the boys pictured here are veterans and two of them, Kleinstiver and C. Telfer, have had three years of varsity golf. The top picture shows reading from left to right Bill Telfer, Captain Chuck Telfer, Vance Kleinstiver, and Frank Smith. In the middle shot Captain Telfer and the number one man. Van Klein- stiver, show some of the fundamentals of the game. The rest of the squad are Charles Whipple. Jack Stonehouse. Bob Vaughn, Leo Calhoun, and Stan Pet- tengill. Baseball Under the direction of Coach Willard Blackney the Red-White baseball teams have maintained a fine record for many years and everything seems to point to a fine season again this year. As you see from the pictures the lads will play on antiquated Athletic Field but their love of the game seems to overcome that handicap. In the top snap John Wirtz is about to try and line one out. Note the look of determination. This dugout shot shows just what those on the bench go through while the boys are in action. Look at Willard’s tense features as he squints into the sun. The bottom pic- ture shows the Reds going into action. The saxophone section of our band puts on a special act at one of our assemblies. The dramatics club puts on several assemblies and in one of these we got a picture of Jack Gibbs in action as he tried the old-fashioned way of ridding himself of the pest played by Mabel Smith. This play like all our others was directed by George Batka, our speech instructor. Franklyn Bergsman volunteered to help at one of our assemblies and drew the job of helping the archery expert. The meeting place for some of the gang between classes and after school is our beloved “well.” This clever shot is one taken from the third floor of the much-used spot. HCTIUITIES Members of the STUDENT Staff have worked long and hard in bringing this book to you. Members are shown in the top picture during production. Read- ing from right to left, Phyllis Neal, Shirley Millne, Fradell Hunter, Lillian Geanokopolous. Florence Oakes, Kath- leen McCormick, LaVina Dykeman, Shirley Cohen, Eleanor Treat, and Kathryn Wilton. Co-Editors Walt Parker, and Ralph Hoffmeyer are shown here just before the “staff” went into action. Standing behind them in the middle is Chuck Telfer, Business Manager. Other mem- bers of the Editorial and business staffs include Don Ludlow, Shirley Millne, Phyllis Neal, Nancy Mosher, and Alice Koury. It takes a lot of advertising to sell the STUDENT to the school. Most of these “shots” show the efforts to put that campaign over. THE STAFF Co-Editor __ Y A I r PARKER Co-Editor Ralph Hoffmeyer Make-up. PHYLLIS A. NF.AL Art Bill Hildebrand Sports _ Dave Gorte, Don Ludlow Business Manager ™ CHARLES TELFER Assistant Business Manager SHIRLEY MILLNE Student Government in action is pic- tured in this top snap. Here we have a meeting of a special committee. Chair- man Bob McVety maps out his plan as Ken Falk, Walt Parker, Dick Gibbs, Walt Barthel, Virginia Fawcett, and faculty advisor Miss Muhlitner look on. Chairman Shirley Henderson and Walt Barthel and Ellen Estlund of the “pep” committee work out ways and means of helping school spirit. That shot of Walt Parker, Student Council President, was shoved in by some of his ‘‘would-be” friends. This group reading from left to right includes Beth Tilly, Ross Zimmer, Joyce Kapanke, Rodger Irwin, and standing are Richard Gibbs and Ken Falk. These folks are mapping out a new Student Council Constitution. At a regular meeting Bill Tomlinson and Bob McVety debate an idea as Vir- ginia Fawcett, Evelyn Phillips, and Ken Washington, look on. One of the outstanding and best- known of our school organizations is the high school band. In their brilliant red and white uniforms the Band per- forms yeoman service. They meet every third hour to rehearse and work out their selections. Mr. E. E. Straffon is the director of this fine organization. At all of our assemblies they play several selections and at one assembly presented an entire concert. Several band festivals and appearances throughout the district have added much to their prestige. Con- gratulations to the Band for their very successful season. Another group that does a lot to keep up the spirit of those attending our games, are the cheerleaders who have worked hard all season. They have de- veloped several new yells and acts which add much to the color of the games. 1 Under the leadership of Miss Anderson and Editor Bob McVety the Lighthouse has been published every other week throughout the year. They have done a great job. This is the staff: Editor Bob McVety Assistant - MARY ALICE MACTAGGART Exchange PAT KELLY Art Virginia Barth. Rosarta Hume Sports Editor KEN FALK Reporters ANN MACDONALD. Character, and Service, fifteen per cent of every class gets elected into the National Honor Society. This is considered a great honor. Lorene Short and Charles Telfer acted as Presidents this past year. The Scribes Club is for those ad- vanced shorthand students who wish to increase their rate of speed in taking dic- tation. The club also has several social events during the year. j The High School Choir, so ably di- rected by Miss Hyde, has given many fine performances this past year. The Choir meets every day eighth hour to rehearse. It sings at the Christmas and Easter assemblies as well as at Bacca- laureate services. Other annual events include the Christmas services at the Desmond Theatre, the Spring Voice Festival, and the Michigan Voice Festi- val in Lansing. This group carries out many fine projects, and it is self-supporting. The Choir president this past year has been Charles Bannan. Before being eligible for the Choir a student must have had at least one year of Vocal. This preliminary training class meets every seventh hour in the auditorium. It, too, is directed by Miss Hyde. The Library Club is made up of students who intend to follow library work as their occupation and those simply interested in books. It assists Miss Evert in Library in all phases of her work. This club is also quite a social group. Those students that are interested in developing and improving their literary ability do this by co-operation in the Creative Writing Club. Under the direc- tion of Miss Ballentinc, the members criticize each others work and produce an annual book containing literary works of its members. This group is the Tenor section of the Vocal Class. We regret that space limitations on page 43 forced us to publish it on this page. Jane Seagrave, Nancy Mosher, and Phyllis Neal admire as Bob McPherson points out the good and bad points of the picture in the upper shot of the Art Club. In the lower pictures L. LeRoy VanValkenburg holds the picture as a three-way critical discussion is carried on. The Art Club, under the supervision of Miss Mann, is interested in all forms of art, ranging from drawing and fash- sion designing, to soap carving. Stewart Preston. Fred Limberg, and Bill Prince discuss the unfinished plane that Mr. Hillburn, the club advisor, is holding. Prince, Bill Kowitz, and Hill- burn listen as Bill Thrun explains the technical aspects of the small motor he holds. The Aeronautics Club was organized last year for those interested in model- plane building. They have taken part in the government model building pro- gram and have completed many models. Top shot shows members of the French Club. This is for students with a very great interest in French and who desire a better understanding of the sub- ject. They speak French, thus gaining confidence in pronunciation and play games to increase their vocabulary knowledge. Miss Olsen is the advisor. The middle picture is of the newly- formed Future Teachers Club. This club studies both the good and bad side of teaching technique as well as teaching requirements. The members also inves- tigate colleges. The club is sponsored by Miss Walsh. Under the direction of Mrs. Posey, those commercial students who wish to supplement their course, participate in added activities in the Commercial Club. The club studies office machine opera- tion and business procedure. The P. H. Club was organized sev- eral years ago by our Athletic Director, “Brick’’ Fowler. All boys that have been awarded their major sports letter are members. Here we have one of the largest of High School Clubs, the Dramatics Club. Under the direction of Mr. Batka. this club has produced some fine plays. The main purpose is to stimulate an active interest in play production methods. The Girls’ Athletic Association, bet- ter known as the G. A. A., is for those girls interested in sports of all kinds. The gym is reserved for them certain nights each week and competition among the classes is quite severe. Miss Kuhlenkamp is faculty advisor for the group. Here we see the Travel Club. It was organized several years ago for those students interes ted in far away places. Several speakers are invited to speak to the group and Miss Meehan, of our mathematics department, has given sev- eral talks. Miss Folkerts is the club sponsor. In connection with her regular Latin course Miss Eichhorn sponsors the Latin Club. They participated in National Latin Week and published a Latin news- paper during the last semester. The Rifle Club is one which gives some of the lads that much-sought chance to learn to shoot and shoot accurately. Under the direction of Cap- tain Robinson the boys are instructed in the handling and care of firearms. In this group is shown some members of the Honor Society. This group is the Scouting Club and is made up of those scouts interested in further scouting activities. Most of the boys are scouts of high rank and many are Sea Scouts. The club advisor is Mr. L. Adams. Here we have the hard-working serv- ice squad. These people have the tough job of keeping things under control in our halls and deserve a lot of credit for the fine job they have done. (The ques- tion of the moment is who let the big Telfer boy into the picture.) One of the favorite winter pastimes around our school is the sport of bowl- ing. The pupils, under the leadership of Mr. Miller, organized two leagues, bowling two nights a week throughout the year at the Red Crown Recreation. Many students took advantage of this opportunity to enjoy themselves. The Camera Club gives students a chance to learn how to develop and print their own pictures. The club goes into the study of photography quite thoroughly under Mr. Ronan, faculty advisor, who probably took this and many other pictures for the STUDENT. The World Affairs Club is for students interested in current events and the discussing and debating of their im- portance. The large map shown in these pictures was set up with its educational information by the club. Miss Dicer is faculty advisor. Those music students who wish to receive further voice training may acquire it through the Solo Training group in which training is given and music studied. This “shot” shows the class officers of June of 1944, being petitioned by a class member. Yearly the Civics classes participate in a mock trial. This year Fred Mills, 1 2B President, was charged with drunk driving. Assisted by Judge Mclnnes and Attorney H. Streeter, the students put on a very realistic trial. These two top “shots’’ are of this event. Marge Bene- dict takes the oath to tell nothing but the truth from Judge Mclnnes. Defend- ant Mills and his lawyer confer as to their next move. The middle picture shows the jury in the background. At the bottom the Chess Club is in the midst of a hot tournament. The club is divided into two groups accord- ing to the experience of the players and several interesting tournaments are held. In springtime the thoughts of the students around good old P. H. H. S. turn to love and their dislike of work. In the upper left shot we see the cad, Ken Falk, having his bit of fun with Jane Gillow (Harry’s girl.) Also, as you can see, we caught Bill Telfer using some of that Telfer tech- nique, the kind his brother made fam- ous. In the picture it is easy to see that Miss Nancy Mosher is liking it, too. Whoever would have thought that Bill Tomlinson, the principal’s own nephew and one of the outstanding men of the senior class, would let himself get caught by the camera with his pipe in his mouth in front of school. Not only that, but he is a good friend of mine and I hate to see a good kid go wrong. Friends Ken Falk and Harry Keeler get real chummy in front of school. It must have been Friday night because of the happy look on their faces. Chuck Bannan must enjoy making faces, otherwise he certainly wouldn’t make them while in the charming com- pany of Marion Anderson. Note the uniform folks! Congratulations THE STUDENT Staff wishes to express their appreciation to Mr. Abernethy and Mr. Ronan for their help.
