Along with the traditional week of students dressing up and the teachers losing their sanity, the teachers got in on the act with the hope of winning an extra hour of preparation time. Mr. Meeker made this possible by teaching an extra hour each day . Mr. Christick, Mr. and Mrs. Rutkofske, Mrs. Eastman, and Mrs. S. Smith were the lucky winners . The teachers really helped make spirit week a week of fun. SPIRIT; A MEMORY 18 20 21 This year ' s homecoming Queen was Lorraine Card. Gwen McMillan, Joan Moser , and LeeAnn Heath were her court. The Cougars won the football game against the Anchor Bay Tars to add to the excitement of the festivities . They organize activities such as spirit week, homecoming, and also sponsor the German Exchange Program . The student I council helps many charitable fundraising groups such las UNICEF. There are also dances, assemblies such ' as the Gong Show, elections, and school clean-ups. L, 27 LIBRARY AIDES LEARN SKILLS BACK ROW L. They learn how to: file cards in the card catalog, check out materials at the front desk, shelve books and magazines, deliver A.V. equipment, and help with the end of the year inventory. These students volunteer to work in the library, usually in place of a study hall. 28 CAMPUS LIFE ADDS LIFE Campus Life enables students to grow mentally, physically, and spiritually. This is accomplished through the discussions at meetings, and at the various activities held within the school year . This year Campus Life traveled three different times . They went by van to Toronto during Christmas vacation; they flew to Florida for the week of spring break; and they bicycled to Canada in June. Other activities included the annual Scream In The Dark spookhouse and a lock-in party at the Y.M.C.A. 29 STUDENTS RECEIVE HONORS The National Honor Society is an organization which selects students for qualities such as character, scholarship, leadership, and service. Each student must have a B or above grade point average . The induction ceremony was held on Monday, May 22 in the PHC cafeteria . They became students at Central for two weeks . Besides attending classes the exchange ' students also visited different sites I in Michigan and Canada . The students in the yearbook class spend most of their time developing film , doing layouts and printing pictures , so the yearbook can be ready to distribute Homecoming weekend. It takes the whole school year to get the yearbook in order . The yearbook usually costs approximately $5500.00, depending on the cover and what kind of end pages the class chooses. The most talked about page will probably be the senic section, activity section anu the sports section. Circulation increased because papers were free. The editorial page improved due to an increase in student ' s letters to the editor, and the quality of news stories improved. Central students on Co-op work inside Central as well as in the community. Central ' s secretaries and counselors have many helpful workers . Students that work out in the community are waiters , waitresses, clerks, typists, and mailboys to name a few. These girls all work in the offices at PHC , except Michelle Slowinski who works at McDonalds . HONORS BAND IN TUNE PHC Honors Band is best known for playing at football games . Our band would really be missed if they didn ' t play at basketball games and pep assemblies. They add a certain spirit that nothing could replace. This year the band began to put some spirit into our Girls ' Basketball games by playing for them. They also played at one of our new Hockey Team’s games . Aside from performing at sports activities , Honors Band puts on concerts for our school and others , marches in parades , and keeps busy with various money making projects . Commencement and Baccalaureate are the final performances of Honors Band. This year ' s John Philip Sousa Band Award was presented to Krystal Maxwell. 1977-78 Honors Band includes: On Alto Sax, Dave Fiedler and Dave Miller. They performed during half time at football games, pep assemblies, and band activities. They raised money by car washes, candy sales, bake sales , and flag sales . This was their fifth year competing at CMU. The Louis Armstrong Jazz Award for 1977-78 was presented to solo sax player Bill Prout. Keyboards; Jan Oveson and Anita Morris. 41 CADET VARSITY PLAYS ON P.H.C. Cadet Varsity Band is composed of ninth grade students. They performed several times here at Central and also appeared at Chippewa and Michigamme. Students in Cadet Varsity participated in fund-raising events to purchase needed equipment. Plans were made to take a trip in the Spring. 43 The tunes from Fiddler on the Roof , Funny Girl , Chicago , and Saturday Night Fever , brought interest to the Broadway Review, which was put on by the Chamber and Acapella Choirs with help from the Freshman Choir . Chamber Choir also performed the Mozart Mass in C . They went to the District Solo Ensemble in Flint where Leonard Mattox, Judi Sams and Jeff Rankin all received first place awards . They then went to the finals where Leonard again received first place . Chamber Choir also performed at the Michigan National Bank, several elementary schools and other district contests . The performances included an assembly at Chippewa, a Christmas Concert, Sing Noel, and the Broadway Review. 47 This year ' s play was titled They put on a Play. The plot involves a gangster and a local group of actors and actresses trying to put on their evening ' s performance . The play was held May 5th and 6th at St. Clair County Community College Theatre. Mr. Mark Nolte who teaches English and performing arts directed the play, Mrs. Laine Erickson produced the play. This year ' s Ski Club was more successful than last year . They weren ' t limited to Black Forest alone. They took a trip to Crystal Mountain and had lots of skiing experience as well as lots of fun. There are various divisions of speaking opportunities one may choose when joining Forensics. They are Oration, Story-telling, Dramatic Duo, Humorous, Multiple Reading, Serious, and Broadcasting. The class is taught and coached by Mrs. Young. 51 DEBATERS BRING HOME TROPHIES PHC ' s Debate Team has made a lot of improvement over the past year. Members took home three Speaker Trophies in the Southern Thumb Debate League . The team has put a lot of time and energy int o producing this year ' s outstanding record. The Varsity Affirmative record was six wins and four losses. The Varsity Negative was five wins and five losses. The J.V. Affirmative was one win and nine losses. The J.V. Negative was five wins and five losses . There are seven members on the board and they meet on the first and third Mondays of each month . The members make decisions concerning the placement of teachers, what classes shall be taught in the schools, when to cancel schools due to snow days and other problems which arise throughout the school year. The members of the school board are as follows: President, Mr. Carl Schwedler; Vice President, Mrs. William Dinnen; Mr. Leland Brown; Mr. Norman Cristick; Mr. Elwin Hartwig; Mrs. Nancy Maywar; Mrs. Alice McKinnon. COOKING CLEANING, COOKING CLEANING . Central s cooks are kept very busy, cooking for Central ' s staff, students, and five other area schools. The custodians are also busy keeping the school clean and doing other odd jobs . Six of the Seven Varsity runners had times faster than 17 minutes for 3 miles. These are the fastest times any of the Central Varsity teams have had. Bill Prout, Dave Swarts and Steve Whits itt will be lost to graduation. However, Mark Wyckoff, Dave Tocco, Ken Swarts and Kevin Tuttle showed great promise as first year runners . Mark Wyckoff broke the sophomore school record for 3 miles and also qualified for the All City Team. Steve Whitsitt won the Most Valuable Runner Award and was on the All City and All League Teams. The S.C.A.L. record was six wins and six losses. They placed fifth in the League and fourth place in the city meet. Above left is Joe Petrossi, junior, taking a swing. Above right is Steve Peters, senior. Steve was the captain of the team and number one player. Steve also made the all-city team. The high point of the season commented Mr. Miller, coach, is when we beat Marysville 180-181. They also went undefeated with a 12 and 0 record in the S.C.A.L. 147 JV GIRL’S BASKETBALL BOUNCES TO VICTORY The JV girls set many records this year, ending the season with an 11-6 record. Coach Jamison showed strong coaching qualities as the JV girls fought for victory after victory. Lynne Conner and Deena Wheeler sparked the team to victories by averaging over 7 points a game . Lynne also appeared as the season ' s highest scorer in one game . The team scored a total of 521 points this season, averaging 30 . 7 points a game . Awards were given out to Debbie Hines for Most Valuable player. Lorraine Card for Captain, and also Individual Honors were given to Debbie Hines and Lorraine Card. PHC tied for first place with St. Clair for the league championship . The team finished the season with a 3-13 record, but will have 10 returning lettermen from this year ' s team. The Drill Team also performed in the annual Santa Claus parade in Sarnia, Ontario and the Blue Water Festival. This year the Royalettes sported new uniforms which they purchased by washing cars and by other long hours of fund-raising projects. In March, our Drill Team competed in the annual Rochester Invitational Drill Team Competition and for the first time in their history brought back a trophy. They won 5th place in the state- wide competition in their division. ' s Varsity cheerleaders stayed at camp Golden Eagle, for four days, at Adrian College in Adrian, Michigan . The team won a spirit megaphone for their cheers , they took third for a poster they had made, they also won two excellent ribbons for the Beware Tigers and Raise that score cheers. At the college they had chant, captain, and fundraising workshops. The cheerleaders learned eight new cheers and a pompom routine. The Co- Valedictorians are Celeste Fiedler and Jan Oveson. The Salutatorian is Madelyn Mumford. Celeste had a 3 . 9 grade point average . She plans a career in radiological technology. Next year. Celeste will begin training in this field at Port Huron Hospital . Jan, who also had a 3.9 average, plans a career in medicine . She will be attending the University of Minnesota next year . Madelyn had a 3.865 average. Her plans for the future include a career in Computer technology.
