Students and facualty participation in spirit week made it memorable. Having class competition brought the classes closer together so it seemed as if there was hardly any age dif- ference between them. Even the freshmen were getting more involved and fought for a chance to beat out the upper classmen. dress as “Kiss . BOTTOM LEFT : Mr. Nolte helps a student with her makeup dur- ing spirit week. Miss VanDerZanden Yearbook, with only 6 veter- ans, had been at quite a loss until the new advisor, editor, and Betty Uxa pulled all of the new students through advertising and the first deadline. The Bicentennial was chosen for the theme for the year- book, workshops were held, and many after hours were spent trying to make this year ' s yearbook differ- ent, new, and interesting. Student Journalists At Work The 11 members of the Cougar Chronicle staff keep busy researching and reporting the news at P.H.S. They also are busy selling advertisements. The paper is getting into the Bicentennial by the new masthead which they have added this year, designed by Mr. Rutkofske. Again the Cougar Chronicle has been a- warded the Quill Scroll Newspaper Evalua- tion Service Award which was also won 2 years ago. 28 29 Spirited Students Make Student Council Work This year Central stu- dents have helped Student Council to become a success. Participation in Homecoming Events added both spirit and wealth to the year. Helping to arouse a Bicentennial feel- ing at Central, Student Coun- cil purchased a duplicate of one of the first American flags. They rewrote the Stu- dent Council Constitution and sponsored many activities in- cluding the Record Drive, to collect records for a record playing system in the Library; The Magazine Sale, and all the Homecoming Events in- cluding the Assembly, Par- ade, Game, and Dance. It has been a successful year for Student Council and in turn, a successful year for Port Huron Central. OPPOSITE PAGE, TOP RIGHT: Jan Richard (Pres.), Jamie Atfield (Tres.), Debby Johnson (Rec. The Royalettes had been practicing new routines since the beginning of August and graduated from using just Pom-poms into us- ing discs, clown outfits, and hats and canes. They practiced 3 nights a week until 4:30 and prepared themselves to perform the short routines that are harder than they seem. They received a lot of help from their new sponsor Miss Kempker. On Dec. 6th the Royalettes went to Sar- nia with the band to march in the Santa Claus Parade. In May, they went with the band to Niagra Falls Canada to the Blossom Festival Parade . 33 The Honors Band is a very active and enthusiastic group. The students perform as a marching band during all home football games and as a Pep Band for all home Basketball games. In addi- tion, the band has performed in the Blue Water Festival Parade, the Sarnia Christmas Day Par- ade and Last Year in the Miss U.S.A. Pageant Parade in New York. Besides performing as a marching group the band also performed two concerts at the school in December and May. They also participated in the MSBOA District III Band and Orchestra Festi- val in March. The Honors Band ends the year by ushering the Seniors at Baccalaureate and Com- mencement Exercises. 34 Jazz Band Hits The Note. Students in this group are members of the hon- ors band. The workshop ensemble meets as a daily class during which time students learn the fundamentals of jazz im- provisation and prepare selections for concert performances. The en- semble participates in many different jazz fest- ivals and concerts. This class and all the other band classes involve ex- tra hours of hard work outside of the classroom and after school . 36 FIRST ROW: L. Kerr, C. Green, L. Clumfoot, S. Fiedler, K. Johns, J. Emphasis is placed on dev- eloping sound performance fundamentals so that students can advance to the Honors Band. This group of students performs at two concerts at Central (December and May), one concert at Chip- pewa and Baccalarreate and Commencement Exercises. In addition, some students are allowea to perform in the basketball pep band. 38 Cadet Band Learns The Tune TOP: Renee VanLuvan and Diana Pickelhop tune their flutes together. Gets Involved In Campus Life Campus Life believes ev- ery Port Huron Central Stu- dent should have a chance for the balanced life. So often, the mental and physical is stressed and the spiritual part is completely forgotten. Meet- ings are held about every two weeks during the school year. There were many fun times like the Burger Bash, Ice Cream Olympics, and the Man Hunt. There are no dues or membership rolls. Any Cen- tral student is welcome. Dan Hendricks is our off campus help and Mrs. Henrietta Hobbs is the sponsor. 51 Pep Club Encourages School Spirit Autographs Autographs Bowling Strikes It Big The Port Huron Central Bowling League has thirty-four members. What would we ever do without Mrs. Willard, Mrs. McLeod, Mrs. Whitford, Karen Philippe, and Karen Jacobson? 69 Mr. Pierce and Mr. Goldsworthy have been at Central since Central started and have come a long way with Central students and faculty. At first no students wanted to come to Central, but as time went on more and more students prefered Central to other Port Huron schools. Mr. Pierce said that school spirit has in- creased significantly, and compared to other schools in our area is tops. Besides teaching world events and problems they also teach us how to take what life dishes out Teachers: (Department Head) Mr. Dickinson; Mr. Young; Mr. Koerber; Mr. Meeker; Mr. Rutkofske; Mrs. Eastman; Mr. Clausman; Mr. Popa. Teaching isn ' t all the Staff does, they help make school history. Our four Science teachers Mr. Christick, Mr. Kish, Mr. Nesbitt, and Mr. Spiess teach everything from Health Science to Physics. These teachers are al- ways there to help you. Cooks And Custodians Help Central Run Smoothly If the Cooks and Custodians weren ' t at school every day doing their job our lives would be a lot harder. They are there to keep our school running smoothly. In its own special way, Central High contributes to American History. Whether or not we all see ourselves in this picture, we are there. Maybe we are in front, maybe in back. Be- cause no matter what you may think at times, we are all a part of Central. The Golden Spike signified the end of a long, hard, eventful drive towards America ' s future. Centrals spike will be planted this year and for years to come. It may not be golden, but it will always cling to all of our hearts. 90 The Spirited Class of “76” Darcy Allow ay Debbie Amon Garry Artman Jamie Atfield Carol Barnum Debbie Baunoch Greg Berra Mary Bloink Dan Blythe John Blythe Mark Bodeis Rick Bonkoske Mary Bookrum Debbie Boshaw Pamella Busholts Janet Burney Kelli Burns Mark Bush Debbie Cameron Beth Campbell Mark Campbell Ginny Canham 92 Seniors Relax During Last Year Senior Homecoming Nominees: TOP ROW: Cathy Jefferson, Carol Conlan, Queen-Patsy Chapman, Karen Philippe, Jane Ureel, Dondra Slingerland, Joanne Zamoic, Therse Napolitan, Carolyn Cowan. They all went through a lot and worked their hardest. Football takes a lot of time, skill and the abil- ity to keep going. Sticking in there when the going got rough. Well the rough got going because the Central Cougars had 3 victories. Three wins might not be much, but to the Cougars it means they didn ' t give up! The effort and practice paid off. Their overall standings were 3-6, and their league standings were 1-5. All in all this year has been challenging and rewarding for the Cougars. 144 TOP LEFT: Mark Bush tried to stretch it for a first down. The rather dissappointing outcome didn ' t clearly illustrate the poten- tial of this sophomore team. Indiv- idualism seemed to be the culprit as it broke down team unity, but it was by no means the victor. The final two games of the season saw the Cougars get back on the right track. TheJ.V. offensive record improved from the 1974 season. The 1976 football year looks bright if these upcoming sophomores keep the team spirit! OPPOSITE PAGE TOP LEFT-Cougars get in jam. The big key to their success was their ability to play good defense. Coach Claseman thought that in the coming years, this freshmen team could be champion- ship material . We They 0 . . . . . Chip. With Mr. Jamison on the side and the fans in the bleachers the cougars re- ceived the support they needed to beat Marysville in a very close game. The cougars had a very close season, either winning or losing by just a few points each game. Bryan Johnson and Marty Grace had the most assists in games for this season. Team members realized that self respect as well as the desire to win was a must. Guard Marcus Price has shown that he has a strong desire to play basketball, a willingness to work and a great deal of potential. Center Tony Norman, aided by forward Chris Pierce proved to be much of the strength the Freshmen squad needed to stay in most of the games. Guard Jack He I - wig and forwards Gary Cesefske and Art Thornley showed much improve- ment and should be an asset to the J. V. team.
