Varsity Team Roars Into New Season 1973 proved to be a year of Cougar frustration, even though the seniors offered leadership and courage with the juniors showing desire and en- thusiasm. The Cougars lair was entered by the hunters seven times while the Cougars could only defeat their prey twice, resulting in a two and seven season. As the season progressed the offense continu- ed to make progress and the defense remained the strength of the Cougars, but the deser- tion of Lady Luck provided a constant barrier. Through all this the Cougars exemplified strong team unity and sportmanship. Fall - 21 BOTTOM ROW: R. Kovach, J. Kerr, T. Williams, M. Almanza, T. Sutton, J. Capadagli, P. Logan, H. Kerr, K. An over-all match record of 6 and 3 was an example of the fine competition seen at Black River Country Club. The team stepped up this year by placing second in the St. Clair Area League and placing ninth in the State Rcgionals. Varsity 4ettcr winners were: Randy Fernandez, Eric Parker, Bob Peterson, Mike McDougal and Carl Schultz. Joe Glombowski was letterman in the 9th grade. Team match average was 162. 0 and the average per man was 40. 5. Fall - 29 Cougars Make a Run for It RIGHT: Coach Spiess contemplates his next meet strategy on the bus back to Central. The seniors captured the many first place titles in the tricycle race, tug-of-war, and the egg toss. The juniors came up with a big sec- ond, sophomores next, and then the freshman. With the close of the day, tired, muddy bodies boarded the bus, patiently waiting to see who the 1974 Fall Festival Queen would be. Spirit Week Activities Bring Famous Persons Back to Life As the first tree of the season takes on a golden tone, stu- dents begin to look forward to Autumn Festival. The entire week before the game and dance is celebrated by a dif- ferent activity each day. Im- personation Day and Greaser Day are two such days. On Im- personation day, characters like Tom Sawyer, Columbo, and Mickey Mouse appear in school. The following day, students return to the era of the fifties. On greaser day, students arrive in bobby socks, greased -back hair, and bulky V- necked sweaters. The days are enjoyed by all as students laugh at their silly attire and teachers grin because they remember it exactly as it was in their high school days. 34-Fall OPPOSITE PAGE TOP: Students display their creativity with their costumes on Famous Person Day. Five Hun- dred people attended (the most ever for Central) and Janet Lund was crowned Queen. Student Council sponsored the dance. 1st Semester student Council has planned many activities but the teachers have been the main obstacle. We can ' t get them to chaperone. 2nd Semester Student Council hopes to get many ideas and activities go- ingwith the help of the teachers. Senior student council representatives are Ellen Scheffler, Julie Dinnen, Joey Johns, Bethanne Hayes, Debbie Bucholtz. 3 8- Fall Freshman Student Council, LEFT TO RIGHT: Doug Richards, Pat Emlaw, Mark Beach, Mark John- ston, Anna White, Mary Haynes, Sue Wiegand, Mary Lou Creamer, Teresa Ott, and Barb Bums. Fall- 39 Pep Club Builds School Spirit 40 The Pep Club is responsible for generating the cheers, yells, and overall enthusiasm known as school spirit. Lead by their sponsor, Mr. Goldsworthy, this club has been more active than all others this year. Be- ginning in the fall, the Pep Club sold refreshments to warm the stomach and cusions to warm the seat at all the home football games. As winter arrived the Pep Club sponsored sign painting contest and entertained the stu- dent body with their creation Kovach the Blue-nosed Cou- gar . Throughout the entire year, the Pep Club was there, undaunted by any sign of apathy. FIRST ROW: A. Warren, D. Orr, E. Scheffler, T. Wessel, C. Tosch. SECOND ROW: S. Warin- ski, D. Ureel, S. There is a lot more to cheerleading than just showing up at the games and spuring the teams on to win. Both cheerleading squads practice at least twice a week. Last summer, the var- sity cheerleaders attended a cheerleading camp at Eastern Michigan University for a week. Cheerleaders also sold knives and sponsored dances to earn money for their ac- tivities. Cheerleading is more than just glory. They work hard to represent the school. 42 - Fall Cheerleaders Give a Boost to Central’s School Spirit Royalettes Fall Into Line This year the Royalettes per- formed at many of Central ' s activities. Along with the band, the thirteen Royalettes per- formed during football, basket- ball, assemblies, and lower grade schools. Keeping school spirit, setting good examples and putting forth a great deal of effort are all qualities of each Royalette. Fund raising activities to go to camp during the summer keep all Royalettes busy the year around. FRONT ROW: J. Parker, M. Emerick, N. Schott, N. Helwig, K. Gray, S. Rondeau, C. Plant. BACK ROW: R. Most games were much closer than the scores indicate. More than once the cougars left at half time points ahead only to lose their lead in the last minutes of play. Senior, Fred Radske, led the Cougars as the season ' s leading scorer, and the leading rebounder. He also set three school records with 283 points cored in one game, and 211 rebounds dur- ing the season. Another Senior, Randy Ko- vach, led in assists with 38 during the sea- son. The season was highlighted by a highly disputed one point loss at the buzzer to Mar- ine City. fcv ! jl ' V, : -i k : ■ P ■W™ . t Uin u Ii_ FRONT ROW: Randy Fernandez, Terry Mathews, Randy Kovach, Fred Radske, Steve Vickery, Marty Ureel, Bob Rainey. The team kept the crowds on the edge of their seats with their 32-31 win over Port Huron Nor- thern ' s blue team, their 49-47 win over Yale, their overtime win over Marys- ville in the last game of the season, and their 53-55 overtime loss to the league champions. Marine City. Joe Glombowski led the freshmen ' s attack scoring 317 points during the season. Joe also scored 26 points against Chip- pewa Valley claiming the honor of most points scored in a game. Mr. Repp served as coach for most of the season but was replaced by Mr. Koerber when Mr. Repp became the JV coach. They also tied for 1st as Co-Champions with Ajichor Bay and Chip- pewa Valley in the SCAL Meet. Frank Sutherland, at 105, took 6th place in the State Finals which were held in Kalamazoo. There was a very good chance of Sutherland taking a 2nd or 3rd place if it wasn’t for a dislocated elbow, which made him default his last 3 matches. Winter- 69 J.V. Matmen Get Into Action The pictures of the J. V. wrestler a- bove and on the opposite page, show the extreme talent of our men. In the years to come they will advance to Varsity Wrestlers and really get to know what wrestling is about. Winter 71 Winter Brings Fun for G.A.A. GAA is a chance and time for every- one involved to get together and just have a good time. In our G. A. A. they do just that. Volleyball, basketball, softball, and swimming are just some of their activities. They put on some dances after basketball games. They participated in several different tour- naments. They meet on Monday and Thursday nights with MRS. Bristol there to help them. Population 74- Winter This year we had three foreign exchange students at our school. All have very distinct personalities and have brought with them the culture of their own country. They have helped to broaden Central ' s view of other countries. We have found out that they are all good students and they are all very warm and friendly. Karen is from Germany and she had no language problem when she came here. She is a very good student and was a mem - ber of the queen ' s court. Charlotte is from Denmark. She speaks seven lan- guages and is very easy to get along with and talk to. She thinks it is very nice here and likes our people a lot. Fernanda is from Brazil. She likes it here a lot and thinks that our school system is easy, but she likes the way it is run. Winter- 75 Honor’s Band Plays On 76-Winter McDonald’s McDonald’s Richard Pettibone a former student from Central talks to Paul Lavalle Director of the McDonald’s All American Band. Richard was in the NBC-TV Rose Ball Parade. McDonalds Locations are 2509 Pine Grove and also 1125 24th St. Honors band is a sixty two -piece perfor- mance group. It started off the year dur- ing the football season showing off their new uniforms. The marching band (honors band) performed at all home games. Oth- er performances this year included con- certs at area intermediate and elemen- tary schools, a Christmas Cabaret, all pep rallies, all basketball games and the usual spring concerts. The Cougar Band also sponsored an even- ing concert presented by the Augustana Concert Band of Augustana College, Rock Island Illinois. At this time plans are un- derway to perform at several schools in the northwestern part of Michigan some- time during the middle of May. Winter- 77 Jazz Band Jazzes It Up Jazz Band is probably the best known band at Central. This group has performed with the Honors band and on its own. On March 22 the Jazz band partici- pated in competition at the CMU Jazz Festival in Mt. Pleasant. Classes meet during the school day, but the group rehearses on Monday nights too. P 78 -Winte r Cadet Band Starts Out Smoothly The Cadet Varsity band students in this band have been working hard to improve their skills in music. Per- formances this year included the Christmas Cabaret, a concert at Chippewa and the spring concert. These hard-working musicians and an important asset to the band pro- gram by helping to raise money and working on the Augustana project. Winter-81 This year the choir had many voices to help make it strong. At Christmas time the choir sang songs of goodwill and happy jingles. T. V. Eight, The Foggcutter, and McMorran Auditori- um had the pleasure of listening to P. H. C. ' s choirs. This year participa- ting in State competition were Dan Perry, Rick Willard, Brian Lindsay, Beth Hayes, and Dora Smith. This spring the choir performed for P. H. C. and Chippewa in concerts and also went on tour. Winter 83 This year Central lost two of its students. Den- nis Ashton was a member of the class of ’74 and was on co-op working at Trudell Tires. Barb La Vere was a junior this year and had worked in the cafeteria since her freshman year on the work experience program. Though we have lost Barb and Dennis, their memories and friends will go on forever. Co-op is an opportunity for students to learn what they want to do once they graduate. They learn to be responsible in the jobs they get and they learn what their boss will expect of them. Co-op students also learn that you always have to be on time , to do things without being told to, and one of the most important things is they learn the value of money. 84- Winter In the fall, the yearbook class met for the first time. The class consisted of five veterans and seven rookies. The odds for a better yearbook than the 1973 Centralian seemed small. Jour- nalistic terms became a part pf their everyday language. Long hours of work after school be- came a normal part of their school day. Guided by the editor, Debbie Edwards, eleven individ- uals became one, working toward a common goal. Their goal fin- ally became a reality. It is with much pride and pleasure that the yearbook staff presents to you their reality, the 1974 Centralian. The 1973 team broke the school re- cord in every event except the 440 yd. dash. Robert J. Johnson has lead the Cou- gars in track while breaking the state re- cord in the long jump. He jumped 23 feet 6 1 2 inches in 72 and then in 73 he jumped 23 feet 9 in. Rob was also selected to the All-State track team in both the long jump and quarter mile in 1972 and again in 1973. Coach Lowell Spiess has done an ex- cellent job of training and placing the indi- vidual into the fourteen various events and forming a very strong team. The relay teams have been very exciting to watch and seldom if ever are defeated. The 880 Re- lay team won every race except the state finals, where they were fourth. BOTTOM LEFT TO RIGHT: M. Although there were problems with sponsors and such things as that, N. H. S. and Debate still press on. With Miss Ballard as sponsor for Debate, the negative team won 14; lost 5, and the affir- mative team won 10; lost 10. In the spring comes National Honor Society ' s most import- ant activity, the induction of new members. To be in N. H. Through a Long Cold Year If you see two familiar faces walking through the halls, taking time to see what ' s happening at P. H.C., it’s pro- bably Mr. William D. Pierce, our principal, and his sidekick, Mr. James Goldsworthy. Mr. Pierce who is active in all of Central’s activities is also ac- tive in such things as antique collecting and a member of a musician union and does a more than adequate job of run- ning Central in a smooth manner. Mr. James Goldsworthy, assistant principal, is such a busy man. Listening to stories, writing blue slips, and suspen- ding students seems to be his favorite past time. Together, these two men help make Central a better place to be. 150-Summer Mrs. Jean McLeod Mrs. Donna Whitford Mrs. Joyce Willard This year ' s office staff added a new addition, Mrs. Jean McCloud. To- gether with Mrs. Donna Whitford and Mrs. Joyce Willard, the three make a perfect team to help run P. H. C. in a smooth manner. Writing blue slips, answering tele- phones, and typing all important memos keep them quite busy through Winter, Spring, Summer and Fall, but they are never too busy to help and get involved with student activities. Summer- 151 Fine Arts Harmonize Together The Fine Arts Department includes diversified fields such as music, art, and foreign language as well as English. The English courses alone offer over 20 different choices to the student. Under the lea- dership of Mr. Hudson, the Fine Arts Department has been busy creating behavioral objectives in an effort to continually improve the quality of the courses. The Fine Arts Department is also the largest department in the school. Summer- 153 Math And Science Explore the Future. The Math and Science Department is headed by Mr. Renner. The Math De- partment offers a variety of courses ranging from basic practical math to trigonometry. With the transition to the metric system becoming more possible every day, teachers are incorporating the slogan Think Metric into their classroom plans. The Science Depart- ment includes many aspects of the sci- ence world into their offerings. Chem- istry, physical science, biology, earth science, and health science offer a wide choice of fields of study to the students.
