Their six and three season was climaxed by a twenty-nine to twelve victory over cross-town rival PH High. Co -Captain, Marty Ureel, takes a break from running during Cross Country prac- tice. The Cross Country team had a fine season and represented our school well. The Varsity Basketball season wasn ' t really as bad as the rec- ords showed. There were some very bright spots throughout the 1973 season. A few breaks and the mighty Cougars would have been fighting for the S.C.A.L. crown along with Marysville and St. Clair. It so happened though that the Cougars dropped 3 games in a row by 2 points or less. The Cougars were led by top scorer Paul Ruffin and leading rebounder Jim Carty. New Coach Gordie Jamison took over in the middle of the season and did a really fine job. ABOVE: Algonac and Port Huron Central varsity basketball players gather around for a rebound. The Freshmen proved to be worthy opponents in the St. Clair Area League as they compiled a record unmatched by JV and Varsity teams. Coach Greg Repp drilled the team well and brought into play new ideas for the future Varsity athletes. 3 2- Athletics The Golf team enjoyed a very fine season this year. They finished 5-3 for an overall record and placed third in the league meet. The Linksman were under the leadership of coach Tom Coleman and were headed by captain Steve Glom- bowski. The golfers played their home matches at Black River Country Club. L. TOR.: S. Glombowski, M. McDougal, C. Shultz, R. Umphreys, Coach T. Coleman, R. Wilkinson, R. Fernandez, E. Urban, and B. BELOW RIGHT: Tom Tiny Valentine looks like he has everything under control as he again pins his man. 34-Athletics Matmen Bring Opponents Down PHC wrestling team enjoyed a very fine sea- son. Before they got under way our wrestlers were predicted to win the class B title. This prediction looked like it was going to become true as our wrestlers completely demolished every team they faced at the first half of the season. But when the 2nd semester started injuries and ineligibility of some key players required Coach Hudson to use some JV wres- tlers in their place. Some of the great achievements performed by the wrestling team were the shallacking of arch -rival PH High 51-3 and winning the Sarnia Invitational Wrestling Tournament. BOTTOM ROW: G. Buckles, T. It ' s one way to obtain money and get a credit at the same time. Most students who take Co-op, are in the process of preparing for after-high- school jobs. 42-Happenings Co-operate Give a Kid a Job M Smile; Photo Club’s Watching V Some of our clubs this year have been classes. This is one of the unusual ones. Photogra- phy Club is really a class. The members of the club learn about types of film, lenses, cameras, special techniques and how to make your pictures better. The members are try- ing to raise money to make the Sacristy a darkroom. One of the ideas was to take pictures at the Senior Prom. BACK ROW (LEFT TO RIGHT) Sandy Gross, Rick Pettibone Jr. , Joey Johns, Dave Whitford. FRONT ROW: Dennis Bassett, Dick Howard, Tiny Valentine, Dave Groulx, Don Howard. 44-Happenings Ski Club Snowed Out; Almost Ski Club didn ' t have a very good chance of being one of the most active groups at Central. Feb- ruary was really the only good month for skiing. Black Forest set Wednesday nights for Central ' s Ski Club this year. They decided not to plan a skiing trip as usual because of the weather in Michigan. Happenings-45 Pepsters Put Up Peppy Posters Pep Club was very active this year. Their main activity has been putting the school song on a poster. When it ' s com- pleted it will be placed in the gym for the student body to see. This year, like last, they sponsored a poster contest, which the juniors won, and spectator buses to football and basketball games. The club gets its money from conces- sions during the football games. CENTRAL FICHT SONG HERE ' S THE CHARGING COUGARS FIGHTING All THE NAT. WINNING PRAISE, AN0G10RT. The club has an exchange student from Finland; she got her letter in tennis. Their main goal this year is to buy a net for base- ball and golf. The club earns money by selling refresh- ments at all the home basket- ball games. Varsity Club also took third place in the Pep Club ' s post- er painting contest. Happenings-47 NHS Sponsors Family National Honor Society is more than just a group of brains sitting around talking, they are also a charity group this year. They took child- ren from the Juvenile Home to McDonalds at the childrens request, and sponsored a dance after one of the bas- ketball games. At Christmas time, NHS ' s main project was providing clothing, toys, and food to a needy family in town. With a team that goes all out for PHC, how could they lose? This year ' s topic on which they spoke was. Resolved: That Ele- mentary and Secondary Education in the United States should be financed exclusively by the federal government. They must have done well for they brought home three trophies; Top Speaker and two Invitational trophies including Top Affirmative Team. Happenings-49 Language Clubs Speak Out Port Huron Central Language Clubs consist of French and Spanish. Both are sponsored by Mr. Sarnarcki. Between the two clubs, they have done al- most everything. Both the clubs have visited the Detroit Insti- tute of Arts. The members earned the money through candy sales. The Spanish Club participated in the Halloween window painting contest. The French Club traveled to Sarnia to listen to a French Band, Les Karrick. In October the class was honored with guest speakers Mamuel Amaral, well known abstract artist, and his charming wife, Carlotta O ' Neil, well known journalist, both of Mexico City. 50- Happenings FAR LEFT: Mr. Sarnacki and students are seen with some band members of the Les Korrick . You ' ve heard the saying They ' ll get better with more experience. The Newspaper has certainly proven this statement to be true. Newspaper, like Yearbook, is a class for academic credit and every month the ten stu- dents put out the Cougar Chronicle. With the help of Miss Ballard they ' ve made the Chron- icle a top rate high school newspaper. The Chronicle keeps the student body informed on clubs and activities along with having many other interesting features. 52- Happenings YEARBOOK STAFF , L. If you would have been in Yearbook Class this year, you would have been surprised that we ever turned the book out. First of all, out of twenty members of the Yearbook Staff, only three had ever had any experience in Journal- ism. By October, a majority of the class wanted to quit. They were very discouraged. It seemed like it was impossible to make dead- lines and everything we wanted to do cost too much. So we decided to offer the Yearbook as a Christmas gift. By the end of February we finally got everything together and sent in our final deadline. We patiently waited for May to see our book. Happenings- 53 Choir Sings Out for Central Acappela Choir once directed by Mr. Pettibone appeared at many school assemblies and special concerts. One outstanding concert was the Christ- mas Cabaret in which they put on a fine perform- ance. A special feature in the Cabaret was a skit put on by members of the choir, in which they sang and performed Twas the Night Before Christmas. Mr. Krause the new choir teacher, has done a lot for the students and choir itself. The Acappela Choir has also raised money by selling candy for choir robes. With the help of the student body the choir has done much to add spirit to this school year. We all appreciate their music and presence at the many school activities. Happenings- 55 And The Band Played On There were three bands this year: Honors, Cadet, and Jazz Band. All three were classes. Jazz band meets Monday night too. A Christmas Cabaret concert was given and the Honors or Concert Band played. Concert Band has also played for all the pep assemblies. L. soccer sports day was held at Algonac this year, and our B team took first place for the second time in a row. The basketball sports day was held at Marysville. The trophies for these sports are proudly displayed in Central’s trophy case. Other sports days were held during the year to de- cide the champions for the remaining activities. BACK ROW: P. We have lost Vicki as a per- son, but her friendship we will never lose. Happenings- 61 Throughout the year Port Huron Central ' s Bowling Club competes against other teams at the Holi- day Inn on Thursday afternoons. Every week the members bowl three games. At the end of the year four boys and four girls are chosen to play against Port Huron Northern High School and Port Huron High. The second year of Port Huron Central has prov- en that the Bowling team has put more effort and more spirit in partici- pating in Student activities. 62-Happenings Campus Life Brings People Together Campus Life has done a lot to arouse many students interests. Every Monday night Campus Life meets and discusses certain topics brought up. The Burger Bash was one to consider and it turned out a great success. The student body was entertained in an assembly by The Connection , and their Scream in the Dark interested many students. This year Campus Life has showed a lot of spirit. STANDING: Maxine Mills, LEFT TO RIGHT: Sherrie Mills, Marty Ureel, Nancy Greene, and Kim Finn. Happenings- 6 3 4 - % Dramatists Display Theatrical Talents Involvement was a key word in The Mouse that Roared . From sets to make-up to acting, director, Mrs. Stevens, rounded everyone into a unified group of students and teachers to produce our second annual all-school play. The story revolves around a tiny country in Europe known as the Duchy of Grand Fenwick. Their main com- plaint is that the United States is taking away their only means of support by im- itating their product, Pinot Grand Fenwick. The wine causes Grand Fenwick to declare war on the U.S. , and by a strange occur - ranee, Fenwickian soldiers capture the Q-bomb. 64-Happenings FAR LEFT ABOVE, A shy Ellen Schmidt hides behind her copy of The Mouse that Roared . David Groulx practiced for hours to get the splendid effect you see here. BELOW, Director Carol Stevens arranges paper- work on sets, costumes, make-up, and characters. Happenings- 65 Spirit Cries Out This year ' s Spirit Week was one that will be remembered by students and faculty years from now. Almost everyone got involved in the many activities. Who can forget seeing Santa Claus, Julius Caesar, or Hitler roam- ing around school on Impersonation Day, or the crowds gathering around the fishbowls during the morning, in between classes, and after school, and finally staying at school all Friday afternoon and night to work on the class wall? The week began with Teen Angel Day (and it certainly looked like a day from the Fifties !). It ran on with Impersonation Day, Jail -Bail Day, and all the activities the day before the game: the soccer games, the tricycle races, the three-legged races, and the egg toss. There was also class competi- tion for the best poster displayed at the game. In the end the seniors won the most points, and the money in the fishbowls, with the sophomores running a close second and the juniors and freshman coming in third and fourth, respectively. 66- Spirit Week OPPOSITE PAGE: ABOVE LEFT- Bill Livingston and Sandy Damaschke par- ticipate in the three-legged race. Only that it will be an evening that you will nev- er forget. For the freshmen it was their first Autumn Festival. For the whole school it was the first complete Home- coming. We chose our first queen and decorated our first class walls, in which the juniors took first place. It was also the first time we won our game, against undefeated Chippewa Valley in our sec- ond year of existence. At the dance everyone listened intently as Marc Ga- lan attempted to announce Stephanie Simpson queen. Between Tom Petrossi trying to pick up a dummy in the park and Dan Reynolds hamming it up, the festival was far from boring. Next year can only offer more success. Autumn Festival-69 70-Happenings Central’s Activities Are Unique Happenings- 71 New Addition Strengthens Voc. Ed. Courses PHC has expanded itself by adding on some new rooms. If you walk into the far north end of the school you will notice that we now have two new classrooms, three shop rooms, and some more desper- ately needed lockers. In the shop rooms there are many new auto- matic machines and some new drafting tables. All of these things are badly needed because many students had to be transfered to PH to take the classes we couldn’t offer. But now these areas are finished and everyone is happy that the addition could be used starting second semester. This is one of many firsts that tell us that Port Huron Central is con- cerned with the needs of students. 72- Happenings vA sr j Our Leaders Are Men of High Principles 74- Administration Coaches Show Their Diversified Personalities OPPOSITE PAGE: William Pierce, Principal, James Goldsworthy, Vice Principal: RIGHT PAGE, TOP: Jim Dickey, RIGHT: Some of our male faculty, BOTTOM: Greg Repp. Administration- 75 JOSEPH AIRTENE REINETTE ALLEN MARY BEAUVAIS DIANE CAMPBELL BRUCE CHRISTICK IRVING CLASEMAN PATRICK COGLEY TOM COLEMAN RUBY CRITTENDEN THEODORE CURRIE JAMES DICKEY ROSETTA DICKEY JAMES DICKINSON JANET EASTMAN ROBERT ELLIOT TOM FRON CORRENTHIA HARRIS JOHN HEERING SUE HYDE HENRIETTA HOBBS JEFFREY HUDSON GORDON JAMISON LYNN LANGAN MARIANNE LYSZAK SARAH McPHARLIN CHARLES MEEKER JERRY MILLER 76 - Administration PHC Staff Works Toward Accreditation GARY NESIBITT KATHLEEN NICKERSON MAUREEN NOLAN JANET PATRICK JAMES PAULSON GEORGE POPA STANLEY RENNER LONNIE RUTKOFSKE JOHN SARNACKI LAWRENCE SEATON SUSAN SMITH LOWELL SPIESS CAROL STEPHENS LINDA SUNDQUIST JANIS VANPELT CAROLE WHITAKER Administration- 77 Counselors Help Solve Daily Problems 78- Administration Office Workers Never Have a Dull Moment TOP: Jean Wright, BOTTOM LEFT: Donna Whitford, BOTTOM RIGHT: Joyce Williard. The Autumn Festival, crowning of the first Queen, the football games, Spirit Week, and pep assemblies made this year great. Even though they didn ' t want to come here, after two years of attending a different school, they have adjusted exceptionally well and have taken their rightful place as first. Their motto is Today is yesterday’s tomorrow. Their colors are light and dark blue. The seniors also have put on Central ' s first Senior Prom. 98- Seniors CL Undercl assm en- Class of ‘74’ Abounds in Strength Cindy Albert Ernie Albert Mike Almanza Mike Amon Dawn Andrews John Anglebrandt Julie Archer Randy Artman Dennis Ashton Frank Atkins Roger Bankston Richard Barringer Robert Barron Dennis Barry John Barry Tim Bartlett Dave Beach Judy Blake Sherrie Black Mike Bodeis Karl Brown Jerry Browski Debbie Bucholtz Gary Buckles Juniors- 101 Juniors Take Steps Back to Childhood for Spirit Week Kathy Campbell John Capadagli Brad Carpo Hilda Castillo Doug Cheedie Carmel a Cini Samuel Clor Don Clyne Cindy Colby Tim Coni an Earlleen Conrad Tom Cooper Linda Cornachia Gary Corwin Thomas Covert Jean Cowan Bill Crackel Patty Crison Terry Cummings Betty Curtis Cheryl Daggett Jim Daniels Marcia Davis Steve Day 102- Juniors Dennis Desjardin Ray Dickinson Julie Dinnen Debbie Docherty Mike Doherty Debbie Edwards Kathy Elliot Keith Ellis Mike Emerich Bob Evans Bob Evans Terry Fagan Jane Falk Paul Falk Denise Fayed Randy Fernandez Carl Foltz Cheryl Foor Dan Francisco Bill Fye Jack Gal an Michele Gardner Dan Glombowski Paula Glombowski Juniors- 103 Juniors Play an Important Part in Music Department Nancy Green Kim Gregory Diana Gossman Tim Gostinger Pansy Haddix Cheryl Hagle Keith Hellmuth Ann Harnden Connie Hastings Beth Ann Hayes Janet Hall Joan Hale Debbie Hill Glen Hillaker Lawrence Holdman Dan Hopp Bethanne Hoppenworth Diane Hooper Nancy Howey Rachel Hunt Chuck Hux A1 Irvine Diane Jackson Pam Jackson Sarah Jackson Ron Jacobs Joey Johns Bethanne Jones John Jones Susan Jones Cindy Kelly Harry Kerr John Kerr Lynda Kerr Robin Kerr Mary Kinney Ed Kish Kathy Kitchen Cheryl Knowles Randy Kovach Mark Krannbrink Karen Kramp Randy Krampien Brenda Krell Cheryl Lambert Donna Landon Stephanie Langolf Gay La turn o Patty Leavitt Juanita Livingston Kathy Loxton Janet Lund Cindy Manley Conny Marshall Lori Martin Juniors- 105 Juniors Pull Together and Prove Class Spirit Juniors Take First in Sign Painting Contest Terry Mathews Linda McDonald Kim McEachern Jan Mckenzie George Mellos Craig Miller Carol Mills Maxine Mills Susan Mintz Diane Moore Richard Morgan Rose Muter Randy Nabozny Marsha Negowski Charles Nelms Brenda Noble Lee Nordgren Martin O’Brien Erik Parker Jill Paulus Pamela Peart Bob Peterson Tom Petrossi Jody Pettibone Ralph Phillips Mark Pickelhaupt Steve Pierce Steve Price Barry Purcell Terry Purcell Fred Radske Becky Relken Karen Richmond Melvin Roberts Paul Rockwell Jacqueline Rucker 108 - Juniors Debbie Ruiz Beverly Russell Ellen Scheffler Jill Schieman Neal Schiller Ellen Schmidt Mary Schneider Nancy Schott Jan Sharrard Breeze Sloan Benny Smith Charles Smith Chuck Smith Julie Smith Karen Smith Kris Smith Ron a Smith Jim Soph a Holly Stoke n Frank Sutherland Tom Sutton Pat Swain Don Tallmadge Elizabeth Taylor Nadine Thompson Juniors- 109 Steering Committee Strives for Leadershi Bob Thoms Marty Ur eel Cathy Valentine Cindy Van Wormer Carol Verlinden Steve Vicencio Gordon Vought Cheryl Waddell Bryan Walker Kent Walker Theresa Wessel Debbie Weston Doug White Myrtle White Dave Whitford Rick Whitford Karin Whittaker Randy Wilkinson Tim Williams Marla Willing Dave Young Joy Zauner Judy Zauner 110 Juniors Juniors- 111 SOPHOMORE CLASS OFFICERS President Vice-president Secretary Treasurer Sue McFadden Lori Guest Cathy Pattinson Cheryl Randolph High Spirit Never Waivers for the Class of ‘75’ Sam Allen Jim Allow ay Debbie Bailey Luanne Baker Rick Banks Danny Barry Robin Baum Terry Beach Earl Bennett Brad Black Cheryl Blake Dave Bonkoske Don Bonkoske Steve Boucher Gary Brackenbury Robert Brauer Terri Bright Cindy Brotherton Russell Brown Sara Buckingham Karen Buchheister Gary Butler Bill Burns Steve Cameron Marshall Campbell Peggy Campbell Mike Card Glenn Carlisle Rudy Castillo Soila Castillo Fred Cesefske Phil Chavez Carolyn Cheedie Darlene Cini Patty Cl el and Rhonda Coleman Sophomores- 113 Patti Collins Rick Collins Richard Conrad Jill Cooper Mike Cudlip Mark Cummings Debbie Dagg John Dandron Barbara Davis Dondra Davis Mike Davis Richard Davison Annette DeBell Debbie Dickinson Kathy Domann Marsha Drayton Rosie Driggers Joy Drouillard Steve Dud as Laurie Dunbar Barb Eames 1 14- Sophomores Mary Ann Emerich Adrienne Eaton Peggy Emlaw Cindy Enright Kathy Evanchuck A1 Falk Annette Falk Barb Falk Chris Falk Mary Falk Mike Falk Randy Falk Larry Feher Joy Fellman John Fleckenstein Theresa Foltz Shawna Forman Ron Fowler Marsha Frasier Janice Fredendall Vicky Fuller Sophomores- 115 Sophomores Are Active At Tuesday Night Rec. Maybe all your high school diploma means to you right now is that- you’ve finally made it through twelve long years. But in time it’s going to mean a whole lot more. It’s going to mean that you’ll earn approximately $100,000.00 more in your lifetime than you would have earned if you hadn’t finished high school. We wish you success and hope you’ll be as wise in making future de- cisions as you were when you decided to finish high school. MICHIGAN NATL.
