19 66 HERITAGE Port Huron Catholic High Port Huron, Michigan Volume II ■- - - v? -ir - . ' 2! 2T- • !y % ? •- .ssSRk - :• j SPIRIT HERITAGE Novelty can be a fascinating thing; newness can be a compelling thing. -‘We’ve never done it, let s try it! is oftentimes the only crv necessary to compel the interest and zeal of the multitude. et history demonstrates that novelty does not necessarUy imply value. Something new, never tried before, is too often just as quickly put down an orgotten. The creation which endures is the creation of value. This is only the second issue of “Heritage” The reason is simple enough: the class of 1966 is only the second graduating class of Port Huron Catholic High School. But the 1966 Heritage represents an important step in the historic development of Port Huron Catholic. Having traveled the maze of difficulties in- volved in publishing a yearbook the possibility of saying “not this year” seemed almost en- ticing. But it is almos symbolic of the “spirit” of Port Huron Catholic that students and a faculty member were found who were willing to ad- dress themselves to the task. A yearbook and its publication is no easy task. It demands the interest of students, relatives, merchants and faculty members. But it demands on more than the interest of some. In the case of the book s staff it demands hours and hours of oftentimes tiresome labor. However if a school claims “spirit” as part of its personality ... and we believe a school does have its own personality ... then it must demon- strate that spirit in countless varying ways: in community projects, in school projects, in the class-room, on the playing field or court, in the day to day dynamics of student and school life. And, perhaps, this is the first time you have been able t o hold “spirit” in tangible form. It’s contained in the pages and bound in hard cover. It is better than the issue of 1965? We hope it is, we would like to think it is, but we would have to admit that this is a judgment couched in some prejudice. Suffice it to say that we offer the 1966 copy of Heritage with the hope that it brings enjoy- ment, that it solidifies memories and happy occasions, that it does its part in furthering the “spirit” of Port Huron Catholic High School. 3 With Faithfulness To the students of Port Huron Catholic, we have for you Father McAnoy a deep sense of appreciation for what you have done for us, especially in using a firm hand to correct our mistakes. Through your fine example you have encouraged us to acquire virtue, and have instilled in us a special love for the Holy Eucharist as the center of our lives, and in the Sacrament of Penance as the source of grace. You have taught us the strength derived from the courage of one’s convictions and made us aware of the link of our daily lives with our eternal life. For the Senior class of nineteen hundred and sixty six, these four years have been years of joy and gratitude, and it is our part- ing wish that we carry out the ideals that you have inspired in us, and that we the Seniors are proud to have been part of Port Huron Catholic. Reverend Thomas J. Me Anoy 4 Sister Mary Willard, O.P. To you Sister Willard, the student body owes a special debt of gratitude: Because you believe change is a sign of life and growth, your one year at P.H.C. has been characterized by a willingness to try new ideas. Your approach to the students has been straightforward and fair-minded, besides being seasoned with your keen wit and sense of humor. You have worked to bring us closer to God by bringing us closer together with the faculty and each other. But above all besides always showing respect for our ideas and endeavors you have demonstrated an eagerness to learn from us. It will be with deep appreciation that we welcome you back next year. 5 6 Seek and You Will Find Answers Sister Roberta Marie, O.P. Through science we seek answers to explain the mysterious and the common place happen- ings of every day. It is through th is wondering that new theories and facts are formed and accepted. Thus, science is our key to the future and we are the world’s future scientists. Sister Mary Samuel, O.P. Sister Mary Norman, O.P. 8 Solutions for the Future Mr. W. Peter Likins Sister Mary Alicia, R.S.M. Mathematics is a science. The science of numbers and the way they operate. It is through this science that the future is built and developed. Sister Mary Clement, R.S.M. Mrs. Robert McDonald 9 Business and Homemaking Mrs. Posey Sister Rose Marie, S.C. Business is a commercial art needed in order to run the world around us. It consists of bookkeepers, secretaries and filers. The homemaker plays another part, for it is through these people that the family is operated. Sister Alice Patricia, I.H.M. Mrs. Dunbar 10 Friendship Can Only Be Achieved Through the Senses Sister Mary Suzanne, S.S.J, )rocchium Sister Marie Mark, S.S.J. The spoken word is one of our keys to friendship and peaceful co-existence in a world of turmoil and war. Without com- munications among people there can only be misunderstandings and needless con- flicts. Thus, languages must be learned and taught in schools throughout the world to insure peace. Miss Francoise Bierge 11 Miss Patricia Scheff Sister Thomas Mary, I.H.M. 12 T ravel Without Movement hnglish is a combination of Sister James Agnes, I.H.M. grammar and literature. It leads us to a world of imagination, or a world of reality. It can show love, hate, sorrow or any other emotion you can feel. In this way it devel- opes us more fully into human beings. Miss Ann Kuchel Sister Anthonita, I.H.M. 13 Our Guides To Tomorrow Guiding students to the world of tomor- row is the job of a counselor. He helps them decide their future in an ever changing world and solves difficulties facing students at the present time. Our spiritual guide is the priest who helps us plan our future in relation to God. Father Joseph Blinstrub, counselor. Father Mason L. Vaughn 14 World of Expression Art and music are an expression of a person’s feelings and of his outlook on life and the world. Art displays a person’s feelings in lines, colors and figures; while music shows feeling in timing, notes and lyrics. Thus, through art and music we can share a person’s feelings and develop a true knowledge of life. Sister Mary Jonathan, O.P. Sister James Martin, O.P. 15 Mr. Donald Wismer, Jr. Mr. David Woodcock Sister Rita Marie, S.S.J. Past, Present and Future Sister Leo Therese, S.S.J. History is our connection with the past. In it we see the blunders and achievements of our forefathers. It is through our review of history that the present and future can be molded and developed into something better. Sister Mary Catherine, S.S.J. 17 Health Means Exercise Physical fitness is needed in the world today. Our working ability depends on how fit we are. Through exercise and sports we will devel- ope physically as well as mentally, and be able to face the life ahead of us better. Mr. Irving Claseman Miss Frances Foley 18 Faculty In Action Here we see Sister Leo Therese, Sister James Martin, and Sister Mary Jonathan looking in their mailboxes for a letter or package. Our faculty lead a busy life. You see them during exchange of classes rushing to their next class, in the classroom, and checking papers. However, have you ever seen what they do between classes? This also is a part of our faculty. It is this hidden part of their day or week that we would like to show you through pictures. Counseling is the job of the whole faculty. Here we see Sister Anthonita discussing plans for college with Jane Streeter and Barb Ingraham. t m ill Meal time means relaxation for the faculty, for here they can talk and joke about everyday happenings. Smiling, Sister Willard, Sister Jona- than, and Sister James Martin are glad it’s TGIF (Thank Goodness It’s Friday) time. The kitchen help, from left to right: Mrs. O’Donnell, Mrs. Carter, Mrs. Carmody and Mr. Fred Pippin, pass out hot lunches to Barb Roberson, Bruce Lawrence and other students, while Albert Letzgus watches. 20 These are the people that keep our school going. They type our letters, balance our books and cook our meals. These men and women are the core of the school. They are the silent workers behind the scene, who make many sacrifices for the school and for its student body. 21 Spiritual Development in the Student Body Future character and spiritual devel- opment of the students of Port Huron Catholic centers around their religious convictions as an active member of student body at Port Huron Catholic. “A good tree cannot bear bad fruit, nor can a bad tree bear good fruit.” Matthew 7.18 23 On the first Friday of each month the student body of Port Huron Catholic assembles in the gym for the purpose of partici- pating in the holy sacrifice of the Mass. 24 The students and faculty listen attentively to one of Father McAnoy’s sermons. Father changes the wine to Blood as the students watch. Students seem to find time to visit the chapel even in their busy daily schedules. The stained glass windows of the chapel at Port Huron Ca- tholic set it apart from the rest of the school. Co nfessions are heard nightly in the chapel for the convenience of the students. Many students meditate frequently during Lent. 28 Father Joseph B. Blinstrub Senior Boys’ Religion Counselor Religion Father Mason L. Vaughn Junior Boys’ Religion Sophomore Boys’ Religion Freshmen Boys’ Religion Father Blinstrub pauses a moment from discussion of various sub- jects with his senior boys’ re- ligion class. Here Kathy Gilan, Cathy Schultz, and Karolan Rop- posch, give one of the weekly Bible services in Religion 12, under the di- rection of Sister Marie Mark. Sophomore girls enjoy their reli- gion class with Sister James Agnes. 30 “It is only in truly valiant young men or women that the practice of Charity follows the knowledge of Charity. I pray that all the students of Port Huron Catholic will learn of these young men because all of us were blessed in know- ing them, in claiming them as our own.” Father McAnoy In Loving Memory of Paul Ward and Glenn Shank 31 32 Academics - Prelude to a Career Today’s students have a tremendous advantage over the students of yester- day. Modern facilities and advanced techniques enable a student to reach the pinnacle in education in a much faster manner. His spirit, therefore, is en- thusiastic for he feels that the problems of reaching his goal have been greatly lessened. A well planned and equipped facility, enc ourages a real spirit of progress to each and everyone in attendance. 33 Right: Miss Kuschel answers questions from her freshman boys in English class. Left: Sr. Caelan observes her English class of senior boys as they read through their assignment. In order to succeed in other sub- jects, a student must know how to speak, read, and write correctly. In the English department, the students learn not just grammar, but they study different literary works from Anglo-Saxon to 20th century writings. Miss Scheff listens to an opinion expressed by one of the sophomore boys in English class. 34 Tom Noetzel tries to explain a rather humorous point to Sr. Anthonita in her senior English class. Jim Venia and Sr. Anthonita discuss Goerthe’s writings as the rest of the senior boys look on. Most students find that it is profitable to study a second language in high school. There are many words and meanings that are similar in the different languages which help each student. Sr. Marie Marks looks on as her fourth year Latin students translate their lesson. Right: If you want to know anything about France, ask a ‘Frenchman’. That s just what Nan Koerber did; and Miss Bierge is more than willing to help. 35 Sr. Leo Therese points out a humorous event in American history to her class of junior girls. World History, which is usually taken in the freshman or sophomore year, in- forms the students of the world’s dis- coveries to its many problems. In the junior year, th e student has American History which devotes itself to America’s discovery, its development, its conflicts, its glories. Government and Economic classes for the seniors, strive to give explanations of our democratic govern- ment and our country’s economic system. Mr. Wismer questions his class of senior girls on the role of the Federal Government. Below: Mr. Wismer gives a short quiz to his senior boys’ economic class. Sr. Rita Marie points out one aspect of American History to Kyron Dionne. 36 In Sr. Alicia ' s “Lost Math Class” , Ron Bloink, (left) works a problem and then (right), he explains his work to the rest of the class. Some knowledge of mathematics is necessary in order to manage our in- dividual lives efficiently. In a larger sense, none of the sciences today could exist without the help of mathematics. In freshman and sophomore years, the students begin the study of Math through Algebra I and Geometry. For those who wish to continue in Math, there is Algebra II and Math IV. Above: Chris Lawrence and Julie Vargo work on an Algebra I problem as Mrs McDonald looks on. In Geometry class, the students listen as Sr. Clement explains a problem to Gerrv Keegan. 37 Many talents and skills of the stu- dents can be brought out and devel- oped during their high school years. Classes such as art, clothing, foods, and music help the student himself and others to recognize and develop his God-given gifts. Sr. Alice Patricia explains to Nancy Molinaro the advantages of putting the lining in bv machine as Nancy Kraus, Mary Ann O’Donnell, Carol Block, and Sharon Zwiernik listen. The art room is always buzzing with various creative activities. Here some of the stu- dents help Sr. James Martin with a ' ‘sticky” project. Sr. Alice Patricia supervises as Pat Dwyer and Linda Szymanski stir their brew.” Students find that, with Sr. Jonathan teaching, music- appreciation class can be enjoyable as well as informative. Sr. Jonathan attempts to convince her class that it isn’t as hard as it may seem to sing. Ready? do re mi . . 38 Physical fitness is essential for our health; both mental health and physical health. At Port Huron Catholic, the students have wonderful opportunities to keep fit. Our large gymnasium provides space for anything from boys basketball . . . to girls’ gymnastics . , . to a place in which to take examinations. Here, the sophomores take the D.A.T. Test on March 9, 1966. Sr. Rose Marie watches her typing class as they warm up for a speed test. Linda Waite types vigorously dur- ing a 2-minute speed test. Mrs. Dunbar points out one of the techniques of shorthand to Mary Holmes. Ernie Stuart, left, and Jesse Cassillo, right, architectural design. In high school, the students learn types of skills, other than just academics. Through courses of typing, drafting, office practice, shorthand, and book- keeping, the students prepare themselves for jobs in the future. work with their classmates on a project on 40 Chemistry has lots of surprises as Carol Ha yes, Sr. Roberta Marie, Jan Kubek, Sharon Daniels, Clara DeNardin, and Judy Landschoot find out. Through classes of Earth Science, Biology, Chemistry, and Physics, students learn about the earth’s surface, their human existance, chemical sub- stances, and different theories of light. These classes help the students answer many questions about their sur- roundings and the world in which they live. Janet Artman and Kathy Ricketts work intently on their problem. Sr. Roberta Marie looks on as Rich McDonald, Mike Whaling, Sharon Hendrick, Ron Bloink, and Dawn Lyons observe the pattern of waves in their physics class. In Biology, Sr. Mary Norman helps Rudy Coronado, Richard Schock, and David West. 41 Athletics In Action Here at Port Huron Catholic you can truly feel the Spirit in Sports. Whether the Warriors are victori- ous or are defeated, there is al- ways a spirit of determination on the part of the team, and a spirit of confidence on the part of the students. S.C.A.L. K George Stracenrider shows good form as he sprints away from the high hurdles. Richard Mullins spirits from the blocks on the way to an- other quarter mile win. 57 Clubs and Organizations . . . play an integral part in the lives of our high school students. Students are given the opportunity to explore interests not covered in their academic subjects. Mem- bership in a club helps to build character by encouraging initia- tive, developing leadership and responsibility, fostering team- work, and creating strong friend- ships. The many varied activities of clubs and organizations teach students to share work, ideas, and responsibilities with other people. Organizations at Port Huron Ca- tholic help to prepare us socially and morally— to become better in- dividuals and well equipped citi- zens in an adult world. Heritage Staff Producing a yearbook is a job of many jobs. At times there is some fun involved, but for the most part there are many hours of hard work, research, writing and re-writing, picture hunting, cropping, and fit- ting pages together attrac- tively. The staff members realized the labor involved when they undertook these responsibilities but the stu- dents were willing to give up their free time in order that the second edition of the Heritage could become a reality. Almost any hour of the day one of the reporters is travelling about the corridors seeking the latest scoop. Seemingly pestering the coach, the principal mem- bers of the faculty, and the students, these news hawks go all out to get their story. After discussing the sotries with their moderator, Miss Scheff, they start their re- write and it isn’t long till the Student Body knows all the news. On Saturdays those who happen to chance upon the newspaper office will find the editors and typists giving their free time so as P.H.C. will have a newspaper. One would think by the size of the room little would be accomplished. But one only needs to see the paper to know the falsity of this statement. 61 Student Council First Row: M. T. Zimmer, L. To make headway in this life, today’s teen must begin early to make social contacts: They must get out into the world and gain experience in the art of living with other people -- the art of society — the art of fellowship. The syllabus of action at Port Huron Catholic provides an excellent oppor- tunity for high school students to gain the necessary familiarity with gregar- iousness to help them Ijegin a success- ful life as a member of a community. Port Huron Catholic’s spirit in all of its activities show a promising outlook for our future adult generation that will include our forward-looking graduates. One of the most important activities this year was the First Annual Home- coming. The members of the court are Christine Devereaux (Junior), Therese Douville (Senior), Donna De St. Aubin (Senior Queen), Kathryn Schultz (Senior), and Maureen Kramer (Sophomore). 71 We’re Number One! After being crowned “Homecoming Queen’’ during the half- time ceremonies by the President of the Home-School Organ- ization, Mr. William Cain, our radiant Queen, Donna De St. Aubin, makes a memorable exit. The Junior Homecoming car “Marys- ville Massacre’’ is owned and driven by William H. Streator. Mr. William Patrick, the key note speaker, addresses the student body while Father McAnoy and Paul Ward listen attentively. Other guest speakers are: Jerry Young, Hermine Turner, Mrs. Eleanor Johnson, Mary Frances Thornton, and Ron Wilson. Greeting Mrs. William Streator at the Human Relations Day are: John Leahy, Thomas Noetzel, Shar- on Touna, and Patrick Grace. 74 Mrs. Ellen Carmody, Mrs. Sue Carter and Mr. Fred Pippen dish out lunch to hungry seniors. Fr om left to right: Pa. rick Keegan, Mike McLaughlin, Tyrone Bassett, Gary Todaro, Thomas Walters, Wa yne Moses, Pat Cogley, Edward Scheffler, Douglas Tuer and Larry Kearns. Happiness is a Full Stomach Sharon Touma asks “May I have the largest portion, please?” while Janet O’Donnell, Cindy Maigret, and Susie Leitch look on in amazement. 75 A senior skit is put on by Zop (Sharon Hendrick) and Unzop (Donna De St. Aubin) and “Miss” Gerald Keegan. Unzop: “Your boyfriend is who? . . . Mike Johnsick!” The Varsity Club is kept busy during half-time pro- viding refreshments for the overflowing crowds at the basketball games. Seniors Break School Routine Kathy Schultz accommodates a thirsty Ed Scheffler. “Ah. Kathy! I wanted it in a glass.” 76 Underclassmen Demonstrate School Spirit” Learni ng a new dance, are freshmen: Pam Hendrick, Chris Lawrence, Clare Bleau, Kathy Kicketts, Marv Ann O ' Brien, Debbie Stein, Danny McNamara Fred Hayes and ‘‘Bus Stop” Bleau make sure they’re not left behind for any of the activities. On October 30th, P.H.C. put on its second Hoot- enanny. Two singers were Kathleen Palmer and Carol Appel, accompanied by Jon Daniels and Nancy Keltz. Bill Jenkins was master of ceremonies. Camilla Armstrong, Alfredo Careaga, Charles Dauphinais, and Carol Appel sing “In Enterprises of Martial Kind” from The Gondoliers. An old favorite, “Michael”, sung by Phil Erickson, Mick Napolitan, and Steve Hudson. Basketball, volleyball, and ping pong were the acti- vities at the Junior Fun Night. Senior boys are on the way to their retreat which was held in Port Sanilac. Michigan. 81 Spirit of ’66 “It is good to be zealously affected al- ways in a good thing.’ No class can be found more “zealously affected” than the class of ’66. Enthusiastic participation in school-related activities is the trademark of the Senior Class. At anytime in the year you will find the Seniors engrossed in hard work, whether it is in sports, class projects, studies, or extracurricular activities. Seniors are the future of our nation. They will be in- volved in any number of careers, helping to build and strengthen America. So many memories will leave with the Seniors in June of ’66. With the grace of God, today’s Seniors will be the leaders of tomorrow’s world. Vs G-o Underclassmen Display High Spirit Enthusiasm runs rampant in the underclasses. The Freshman, to whom everything is new, seems exhuberant and eager to add his energies to the total spirit of the school. Prudent and perhaps a bit wiser, the Sophomore has his past years’ feelings even more aroused as he falls in step with the school’s vibrancy. Rounding out this impressive group we find our Juniors, who are eager to meet every challenge, accept their responsibilities, and add their vitality to the end product . . .
