Trip to Pontiac Having completed our work, we, as Juniors, were given special permission to visit Pontiac State Hospital, Our principal, Carl Reithel, and our coach, Danieljarabek, accompanied us, These two members of the faculty, Eddie Schave, and Cecil Finkel served as nur drivers, We left Port Hope High School at approximately nine o'clock on the twenty-third of May, which turned out to be a bright, sunny day, About eleven o'clock we stopped at a small road-side park outside Lapeer, where we had a picnic of sandwiches, pop, salad, and cake, After everyone had eaten, we cleaned up our things and continued on our merry way, A Our way stopped being so merry when we arrived at Pontiac State Hospital about one in the afternoon, We entered the waiting room to wait for the nurse who would take us around and explain things to us, When she came, we were shown the various treatments given to patients, ln the morgue,fNope, no dead bodies were seen, Disappoint- ing, hmm?l the nurse explained that examinations were made, with the consent of rela- tives, of patients who died in the Hospital, She also told us of the different types of insanity We then went to rooms where patients were working on various craft projects, such as .weaving, knitting, painting, and ceramics, In the- recreation room we saw varied types of patients, some of whom were playing cards or checkers, and others talking, Most of them were smoking, even old women, The patients have dances, movies, and other forms of recreation, Many of the patients made wise-cracks about our being there, When any of them said something to us, we didn't know whether to answer or just ignore them, Each of us did what he thought best and all lived through it, One of the things many of us noticed was that the doors at the end of all the halls and in some of the rooms were locked, After completing our tour of the Hospital, we split up, each car and group going its own way, The next day, to the surprise of our schoolmates, who were sure the Hospital would keep us, all Seniors were present and accounted for, This tour made us feel somewhat more educated and experienced and also made us realize just how many things we all have to be thankful for, , - -. ,, ,.,'
