Girls' Athletic Association The Port Byron Chaoter of the Girls' Athletic Association was organized for the third year during the first week of school. This chaoter is a member of the state organization whose ob- ject is to stimulate interest and participation in girl's ath- letic activities, 'At the organization meeting, Beverly Hose was elected oresidentg Vary Noah, vice-president, Joan Zwola- nek, secretary, and Wilma Hayes, treasurer. The ooint system, set up by the Illinois League of High School Girls' Athletic Associations, was adopted by this chapter, Points toward awards are given for Organized Activity, Unorgag- ized Activity, Skill Tests, and Health. Organized Activities refer to those games, soorts, and related activities which are carried on in ohysical education classes such as basketball, vollyball, baseball, Unorganized Activities are those sports, games, and related activities such as tennis, bicycling, skat- ing, and horseback riding, which are carried on by the individ- ual outside of school, Health ooints are given for examine! tions by a ohysician of lungs, heart, eyes, ears, nose, throat, teeth, oosture and feet, Points may also be won for keeping the following health rules for eight consecutive weeks: ' ' 1-Eight consecutive hours of sleep in a well Venti-, lated room every night. On Saturday night only, the eight hours may begin later than 10:30, 2-At least eight glasses of water during the day. Milk may be substituted for water. -Three meals including fruit and vegetables, -Nothing between meals excent fruit, milk, malted milk, bread and butter, graham crackers, hot choc- olate, ooo corn, or plain ice cream, 5-A bath daily. 6-Brush teeth twice daily. 7-Not more than one cup of tea or coffee a day. 8-No smoking, To receive an award the student must fulfill requirements in scholarshio, soortsmanshio, team activity, health, as well as outside activities, 3 4 Points are cumulative i.e. those earned in one year may be added to those earned the following year, There are four a- wards which may be earned by each girl during her four years in high school. The first local award Cclass numeral! is given for eco ooints. 4500 activity and l00 healthl. This year Bev- erly Hose, Donna Jean Schmoll, Elinor Larson, Nancy Zwolanek, Joan Ecker, Barbara Johnson, Barbara Lewis, Mary Lou Engebret- sen, Glee Luecke, Marilyn Thorngren, Mildred Railing, and Judy Barker had enough ooints for the first local award. The second local award is given for l20O points C1000 activity and 200 healthl. This award is a gold GAA pin and Ruth Thomsen, Sue Lamb, and Beverly Hose earned points sufficient to merit one.
