SOPHOMORE MEMOIRS On September 3, thirty-one Sophomores trudged back to high school to climb the second rung on the ladder whose top is graduation. We had lost Floyd Taggart, Robert Powell, Earl Talbot, and Edith Putt, but acquired two new members, Truman Langhofer and Doris Carpenter. Before long, Don Wuehle of East Moline, increased our ranks to 31. We met for a class meeting and elected officers for the year. We chose Trudy Mostert, President, Robert Carlson, Vice-Pres- identg Mary Lou Engebretson, Secretary, Earl Bull, Treasurer, Barbara Johnson and Donald Frits, Student Council. Clyde Hofflund became our Class Sponsor. On September 14, we initiated the newly enrolled Freshmen, 22 of them. Initiation was an all day affair and we experienced Sophs certainly made them bite the dust. From 9:00 a.m. until the close of school we made the little Freshies pay us the homage due us as upper classmen. Low salamies by way of sal- utation were requirer of every Freshman when he met a Soph- omore. It was pug day and we made the most of it, remember- ing that just the year previous, we were the unfortunate ones who Hgot the works.N We made the Freshmen boys wear skirts and blouses, one anklet and one long stocking, one high heel shoe and one rubber boot. On each head was a turban. They had to wear lipstick and rouge and polish their nails. Books were carried in doll buggies. Lunches were eaten on the gym floor. Girls wore overalls and blouses, mismatched shoes, dark sweaters and blouses over them. Hair in pigtails, books in wheelbarrows, and by means of identification each Freshman had to paint the word Freshie across his forehead in lipstick. It was a gala affair and we enjoyed every minute of it. You know Nvengeanceu is sweet. At an all school assembly at 3:00 we continued the initiation until the close of school. We pulled all the tricks we knew out of our bag.and provided a real interesting entertainment for the entire school. The Freshmen in the and were good sports about it all and in the evening we Nturned the tablesu and were the genial hosts to the entire school at a party to honor the Freshmen. Dancing was enjoyed and refreshments were served. So ended the traditional hazing to which all Freshmen, in high schools and colleges throughout our land, are subjected-an American tradition, rough in spots, yet done in a spirit of fun and good-fellowship. We Sophomores were the only class in school to reach their goal in the Curtis Magazine Contest which is launched in high school every fall. We're proud of this record.
