S John Gustafson, piano teacner in grades and high school during the year, succeeded Floyd Johnson as Director of the summer band and outdoor concerts were given weekly. In the spring of 1947, Mrs. Ashdown, Principal of the grade school, and Mr. Hall, high school Principal, found a capable instructor, Mr. Louis Di Iulio, Band Director at East Moline high School, and he was hired on a cooperative basis, building his band from both grade and high school students. He conducted weegly practices in the high school gym with a total band mem- bership of twenty-two. Band members from the grade school were Doyle Guinn, Beverly Dailey, Hilton Powell, Luanne Frits, Charlene Smith, clarinetsg Andy Mostert, Benjamin Grumadas, Tommy Powell, cornets and trum pets, Jack Ramsar, Patty Lmith, saxophonesg Lorraine Love, bass horng Joanne Fritchtnitch, alto horn, James Thorngren, Russell Henry , drums . Band members from the high school were Richard Wells, Alan An- derson, clarinetsg Joan Zwolanek, cornetg Dolores Skelton, sax- ophone, Larry Atkinson, Don Earhart, trombonesg Norma Frits, bass horng Blair Thornbloom, drum. Ages of band members ranged from nine to eighteen which present ed a real problem for the Director. The youngest was drummer Russell Henry, nine, and this was his first experience in band membership, the oldest was Larry Atkinson, a Senior, who was one of the charter members of the Band when it was organized in 1939- The high school and grades were fortunate in securing Louis Di Iulio to direct the Band during the spring months. Mr. Di Iulio, entered East Moline High School from the Hoffman Grade School of that city. He was during all four years out of thirty. After his basic training at an active member of the high school Band and as a Senior held first chair clarinet graduation, he joined the Army, receiving Camp Fannin, Texasg Fort Meade, Marylandg and Stoneman, California. He was then sent to the Philippine Islands for eight months active service. From there he went to Korea where he became a member of the 7th Division Band. He was discharged with the rank of Corporal at Fort Sheridan on November 20, 1945. After discharge, he enrolled at Augustana where he is now majoring in Uusic. This year in addition to di recting the grade and high school band in practice twice a week he led the East Uoline Swing Band and assisted in directing the East Moline grade and high school bands.
