S John Gustafson, piano teacner in grades and high school during the year, succeeded Floyd Johnson as Director of the summer band and outdoor concerts were given weekly. In the spring of 1947, Mrs. Ashdown, Principal of the grade school, and Mr. Hall, high school Principal, found a capable instructor, Mr. Louis Di Iulio, Band Director at East Moline high School, and he was hired on a cooperative basis, building his band from both grade and high school students. He conducted weegly practices in the high school gym with a total band mem- bership of twenty-two. Band members from the grade school were Doyle Guinn, Beverly Dailey, Hilton Powell, Luanne Frits, Charlene Smith, clarinetsg Andy Mostert, Benjamin Grumadas, Tommy Powell, cornets and trum pets, Jack Ramsar, Patty Lmith, saxophonesg Lorraine Love, bass horng Joanne Fritchtnitch, alto horn, James Thorngren, Russell Henry , drums . Band members from the high school were Richard Wells, Alan An- derson, clarinetsg Joan Zwolanek, cornetg Dolores Skelton, sax- ophone, Larry Atkinson, Don Earhart, trombonesg Norma Frits, bass horng Blair Thornbloom, drum. Ages of band members ranged from nine to eighteen which present ed a real problem for the Director. The youngest was drummer Russell Henry, nine, and this was his first experience in band membership, the oldest was Larry Atkinson, a Senior, who was one of the charter members of the Band when it was organized in 1939- The high school and grades were fortunate in securing Louis Di Iulio to direct the Band during the spring months. Mr. Di Iulio, entered East Moline High School from the Hoffman Grade School of that city. He was during all four years out of thirty. After his basic training at an active member of the high school Band and as a Senior held first chair clarinet graduation, he joined the Army, receiving Camp Fannin, Texasg Fort Meade, Marylandg and Stoneman, California. He was then sent to the Philippine Islands for eight months active service. From there he went to Korea where he became a member of the 7th Division Band. He was discharged with the rank of Corporal at Fort Sheridan on November 20, 1945. After discharge, he enrolled at Augustana where he is now majoring in Uusic. This year in addition to di recting the grade and high school band in practice twice a week he led the East Uoline Swing Band and assisted in directing the East Moline grade and high school bands.

An additional five Band membership to thirty, and they were heard rious concerts and contests at home and in other schools. 42, they received B rating among Class D bands in a con- at Geneseo. In December, 1943, under the direction of arlson, the Band gave a concert in the high school aud- um, selections by the band being supplemented by the Glee and Boys' Chorus. Again, in May, 1944, the band gave a rt under Mrs. Carlson's direction with the Girls' Glee Girls' Quartet, Boys' Trio, and Boys' Chorus contributing. was no music at school in 1945, but in 1946 Floyd Johnson, gustana student, again organized a twenty-four piece band ade and high school students. He devoted part of his time ade school music, part to high school. Rehearsals were every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday. Monday and Wednesday ices were not required but they added thirty minutes to practice record. Friday practices were held from 3:00 45 and every one was required to be present at these meet- In March, the band gave a concert assisted by Augustana t. The proceeds of this entertainment were used to keep and intact over the summer, under the direction of John M: fson who, during the year, taught piano at the grade school igh school rs of the band appearing in the band concert were: Norma , Larry Atkinson, Blair Thornbloom, Beverly Pannell, Edward van, Joan Zwolanek, Benjamin Grumadas, Andre Mostert, Bill ckerson Dolores Skelton, Sherwood Koontz, Dick Wells, Alan son, Luanne Frlts, Eldon Railing, Charlene Smith, Patricia , Jack Ramsar, and Beverly Dailey. iBand ensemble consisted ss horn, trombone, drums, cornets, mellophone, oboe, sax- e, and clarinets. g the year interested parents and friends continued the Band ers Club which was begun in 1940. At a tea in the Home Ec in November, the Club began its activities by making plans dance to be sponsored by the P.T.A., the proceeds of which keep the Band active during summer vacation. Beverly Pan- a member of the Senior Typing Class, cut and mimeographed ts of admission and on April 24, a dance was held in the school gym with music furnished by Howard Plym's orchestra.
