Port game thre givi seas they meri firs Two-Rivers Conference Football Games Competitors: Annawan-Prophetstown-Hillsdale 1946 Byron's six-man football team, in a series of Conference against Annawan, Prophetstown, and Hillsdale, scored successive victories on the home field and out of town, g them the Two-Rivers championship for the 1946 football n. Under Coach Hoff's capable and inspiring leadership, earned the title of TWO-RIVERS CONFERENCE CHAMPS, and ed the award of the Conference Trophy presented for the time to a winning team. The ear 1946 marks the beginning of the presentation of a foot all Trophy to the winners of the Conference competition, and ort Byron is therefore the first team in the Two-Rivers Conf rence to be thus honored. At an all-school pep-meeting, Octo er 21, Muggs Warren, newly elected Captain of the team, pres nted the Trophy to Coach Hoff, he in turn presented it to Prin ipal C. S. Hall who accepted it on behalf of the school. The first game of the series was played against Annawan on our home field, September 20. Annawan's Coach felt the need of disc plinary action, it seems, and his first team therefore Hwar ed the benches.N Our first team scored 14 points in 3 minu es against his second team and Hoff's Reserves finished the ame with a victory---35 to O. Touchdowns were made by Jo on, Atkinson 2, Wainwright, and Bull, points after touch- dow by Atkinson, Johnson, Frits, and Warren 2. ptember 27, Port Byron Gridders downed Prophetstown 33-7 On S on Part Byron's field. Prophetstown's team had a heavy ex- Le per ning the whe Touc mad touc On dal bei Thi Red Cha dal rec nced line but our first team had little difficulty run- up 19 points in the first quarter. Our second team played emainder of the game except If minutes in the last quarte it was neccessary to put in the first team to stop scores downs in this secong Conference game of the season were by Warren 2, Atkinson, Earhart, and Frits. Points after downs by Frits and Johnson, 2. tober 18, Port Byron won a 28 to 24 victory over Hills- on Hillsdale's field, the four-point margin of victory g two drop-kicks by Warren for the point after touchdown. was a great event in Port Byron's football history as the evils thru this victory became the WTwo-Rivers Conference psn-having won all three competitive games. Red a 50-yard punt which was promptly returned 6O yards uncor for a touchdown by Fischer of Hillsdale. Wake, of Hillsdale missed the drop kick. Score: Hillsdale 6, Port Byron O. Port yron received and was stopped again. Hillsdale came back gain with a 55-yard run by Wake for another touchdown. Wake drop Kicu was blocked by Johnson of Fort Byron. Score: Hills ale 12, Port Byron O. Port Byron received again and af- ter a exchange of the ball, Johnson received a pass from Warre and galloped 35 yards for our first score. Warren S drop ich was good. Scores Hillsdale 12, Port Byron 8. Hills- dale' Fischer again tcom off for a 45-yard dash to end the half t 18-5. The second half was somewhat difierent.' A long run by Atkin- son a d a plunge by Johnson gave Port Byron 6 more points. Warre.'s Kick was blacked. Score: Hillsdale 18, Sort Byron 14 Long, uns by Warren set Port Byron up for a plunge by Tohnson and a lateral tc Atkinson who carried it over for another six poinls. Uarrens kick was good. Score: Hillsdale l8, Port Byro 22. In the lest quarter Warren tore loose for what turnk out to be the winning 75-yard touchdown run, for it gave sort Byron a lead of 12 points. Hillsdale's Fischer came back 'ith a 55-yard sprint to close the gap to 4 points. The game ended with the ball in Port Byron's possession. Final scor : Port Byron 28, Hillsdale 24. Touchdowns for Port Byron by J hnson 2, Warren, and Atkinsong points after touchdowns by Warr n 4.
