ATHLETICS All our life we are constantly making decisions between two or more objects or conditions. This is true from the moment when we first lie in our crib and grasp for the red ball in- stead of the green one dangling before our eyes. The decision was not difficult to make at that time for both balls were our own and ownership was not a factor. As time passed, how- ever, we had to consider ownership and the element of give and take, We had to evaluate the objects and decide which one we desired most, giving the remainder to our little broth- er, sister, or playmate. This pleasant condition of Hgetting what we wantedn was short-lived for we were almost immediate- ly confronted with parental insistence that we not always take the best or that which we desired most, but that we share equally even to the point of allowing our playmates to have the object of their choice. This fundamental basis of sportsmanship was difficult to learn but with the help of kind, sympathetic, and intelligent guid- ance on the part of our parents we were able gradually to in- hibit our desires and place new values of friendship, coopera- tion, assistance, and conduct. Now, at this stage of our life, as high school students, we no longer find ourselves insisting on the best, playing as we want to play and according to our rules, winning at any cost. Instead, our games are conducted on a democratic basis with equal rights for all and with the benefit of the doubt going in favor of the opposition. Herein lies the crix of sportsmanship and the sole justifica- tion of any athletic program. Through no other medium can we complete the training started in our crib and add to it the seasoning spice of leadership, sacrifice, persistence, devot- ion to a cause, determination, self reliance, emotional stab- ility, and coordination of self with the entire unit, Athletics is not the end but the means to an end, for the carryover into society is nearly one hundred per-cent. A good athlete, which certainly does not necessitate athletic profi- ciency in the least, is a good citizen, for through athletics he.has developed within himself the personal characteristics paramount also to good citizenship. Equipped with such qual- ities as these, he finds it easy to meet the demands which life makes in this ever-changing world. .
