PIRATE This year's Pirate Annual is based on Movies, the theater, catching people in action. Movies are filled with excitement and stars. There is a lot of time, work and effort put into making a movie. We feel our annual is percisely that. A fan- tastic year was put into this book; now we would like you to catch a glimpse of the show. Lights, Camera, Action.............ROLL 'EM!!! i fit STUNTMEN pg. 45 Cl i t GUILDS PRODUCTIONS pg. 73 ■The 1979 Pirate Annual is dedicated to two very special men that we feel contributed a great deal to our growth as individuals. Mr. Scott MacGregor is a former business teacher at Port Austin High School. He was also the basketball coach of the 1977 Pirate team. He led them to their first District Championship since 1967. Mr. MacGregor now lives in Midland and works for Farm Bureau Insurance. He earned his teaching degree from Central Michigan University, and we were very lucky to have him for the time we did. Mr. Gary Cass, was a principal at Port Austin Public School. He was only here one year, but during that time he helped us a great deal. For many of us, he became a dear friend treasured forever. Mr. Cass now lives in Lansing, and is a consultant for the Mich- igan State Board. Like Mr. MacGregor, Mr. Cass also graduated from Central Michigan University. Both of these men have been very special to us. They have shown concern and tried to help us in many ways. The memories of them will be in our hearts forever. Thank You very much for all of your time and concern. Mr. MacGregor and Mr. Cass you're two great people!!! DIRECTORS - - Z - - ✓ 5 The group behind the scenes. And last but not least The Dispatch, an extra paper full of lots of interest- ing stories and facts. Of course there is the Yearbook the journalsim class puts together. Alot of time was also spent on making programs, assist- ing in the Red Cross Blood Drive and many other miscellanious projects also. A great job done by a great class. During the week the students did different things to show their spirit. On Monday it was You Are My Friend Day. Everyone sent candy kisses to their special friends. Tues- day was the day everyone forgot to take off their pajamas before coming to school; it was P.J. and Pet Day. 50's Day was on Wednesday, and on Thurs- day everyone signed each others T-shirts. To close the Spirit Week, Friday was Banana Day. To fire the guys up, the cheerleaders put together an hour pep assembly Friday afternoon. The game started at 1:00 o'clock on Saturday; the Parade of Floats was first. The game didn't go too well, but not all was lost; every- one was happy anyway. Becky Yaroch was crowned queen at half time of the game, and the winners of the floats were announced. The sophomore class won first with the theme Burn 'Em. The seniors took second, and the seventh grade third. No one will ever forget the dance. The band was Summit, and they did a fantastic job. All in all the Homecoming was a very memorable occasion for all. v______________________________________________________________________y wjw mr Km The Winter Carnival this year started out with the perfect weather: cold and freezing. All went well despite the cold. Many events took place, with the Juniors winning the over-all championship. The Seniors took the broomball title in a clean sweep. The dance was held on Saturday, and for all of those hungry people a pancake breakfast on Sunday, sponsored by the seniors. m 86 CAST Roane Shepperley----Laura Garrett Tessie-------------Margaret Finan Margaret Biller------------Bonita Yaroch Tommy-------------Mike Mikolowski Hester Fontaine---RoxanneDeBloi s Augusta Garvey---------------Tina Bruce Garald Clayton----Robbie Knoblock Ora Fontaine------------Mike Korn Hubert Biller-----------------Jim Mullai Rodney Church-----Ricky Goretski Last night it stormed terribly. The thunder shook the house and the lightening seemed to cut the sky in two. I couldn't sleep— I never can during storms. No matter how hard I tried, I couldn't prevent my mind from wandering back to that night— the night I'll never forget. Suddenly, I felt I was in that room again— the living room of the house that stood on the cliff— the living room where I knew happines and fear. My mind began forming crazy patterns and, there in the midst of everything, I saw the gun just as it had been— lying there on the sofa. My fingers held onto the edge of the bed, but my imagination made it take a diff- erent shape. It felt like the back of the chair in that living room. I held onto it just as I had that night and I almost heard that cry again and felt the warm blood under my hand. How silly I was to think about it again and live through those final days once more. Back—back to the beginning—when was the beginning? Above: Roane,Hester, Gerald and Mrs. Garvey having afternoon tea. While Mrs. Garvey tries to find out all she can about Clara Watter's death. Below: Gerald and Roane conversing in a polite fashion, which soon leads to love. V_______________________________________ Above: The Inspector once again doing his duty. In this scene he is speaking to Marg- aret, the housekeeper and Tommy, her son. Tommy, a retarded boy, who is later mur- dered in the play, is a boy ot great compas- sion . Above: Ora giving Augusta a drop of brandy. Augusta being the town gossiper, has come once again to the household to find out all she can. When she finds her company is not welcome she leaves with a wind of anger. Left: Tessie and Hester comforting Roane after someone has just tried to strangle her. Who could the murderer be ? Who tore apart the flowers and stuffed bear Gerald brought for Roane? In the clos- ing of the play, he finally takes his own life, Ora kills himself. The Inspector paying his first visit to the household of Ora and Hester. He is politely questioning Hester, Gerald, Roane and Ora about the death of Clara Watters. The Inspec- tor was sent from Scotland Yard to investigate the death, which suddenly became murder. V______________________________J «7 A little trip to Toronto. What a vacation! So many things to see and do. Some of the members of the Class of 1979 worked very hard to go on a trip this year. For five days their dream came true in Toronto, Canada. Everyone had a fantastic time. Many hope to go back again someday. Watch out Toronto ! The crazy ones are on the loose. Volleyball, cheerleading, football, and basketball awards were presented to the high school athletes on March 30. The coaches presented their team members with certificates for their achievements. A Pot Luck Dinner was held before the awards started. Dr. Waldo Sauter, from Central Michigan University, gave a very nice speech about the import- antance of athletics. All of the fall and winter athletic awards given were well deserved. --------------------------------- 1. By Tina Bruce MEMORIES TO HOLD Pictures and embraces, Memories of places. Times we shared together, Times we'll remember forever. The year was 1949, and it was time for a new school! The new school would be built in three sections, and what a school! It was much bet- ter than the old school which was located down- town (in what is now the gym parking lot). In 1951 a tragedy occured in Kinde. North Huron School burned to the ground. There was some talk at that time about a consolidation with Port Austin---but it was just that--talk. And North Huron went ahead on their own to rebuild. Port Austin Public School continued on its own also. But enrollment in both districts was declining steadily, as in other areas. Consol- idation was again discussed, only this time formally between the two Boards of Education. On April 20, 1978, the voters of the two districts went to the polls. Port Austin voters favored consolidation 426 yes to 217 no. However, North Huron voters rejected the proposal 612 to 258. The Port Austin Board then proposed a $1.3 million building project, to include a new gymnasium and five additional classrooms. This plan was rejected by voters, however. The next step was investigating the poss- ibility of annexation by the North Huron District. Their Board was approached with the idea, and on March 29, 1979 they form- ally approved the proposal. On May 21, 1979, the Port Austin voters again went to the polls. This time the results were very close, but the vote to annex with North Huron passed. Port Austin Public School is now history, but full of many memories. Many fine stu- dents have passed through the doors of our school. Many achievements in academics, athletics, drama, etc. can be attributed to the students of P.A.H.S. There are many things to be proud of. Port Austin Public School, although now history, has done its job. And it should be recognized by everyone for what it has done. It is a school that will be long remembered by all of those who attended. Thank you P.A. . . .it's been great! I J Times watching the drama plays Watching the games In the old gym Or even in the rain. Playing on the swings, Touch tag in the parking lot Homecoming games and queens Memories that will not be forgot. Singing our school Song With all of our might Watching our Pirate teams go for victory, Never giving up a fight. Making new friends And always keeping old Living so many happy times Watching history before our eyes unfold Port Austin Public School You have given us many memories to hold The Pirate name will mean much to us Even as it grows old. ■David Thuemmel, President of the Port Austin Board of Education, and Circuit fudge M. What happens on the last day? Of course, it's exam time. What a way to end a year. Here are a few photos of some stu- dents racking their brains out on some tough exams. Then it's time to relax.
