7k PIRATE '73 PORT AUSTIN HIGH SCHOOL PORT AUSTIN, MICHIGAN DEDICATION . . . and I think about the people who mean so much to me, and for so many years have made me so very happy. And I count the times that I've forgotten to say Thank you , and just how much I love them. Thank you, Mrs. Stanek, from all of your kids. fit: m I; 1 1 1 1 - gk Photo by Hearsch THEME To everything there is a season. And a time to every purpose under the heaven: A time to be born, and a time to die: A time to plant, and a time to pluck up that which is planted; A time to kill, and a time to heal; A time to break down, and a time to build up; A time to weep, and a time to laugh; A time to mourn, and a time to dance; A time to cast away stones, and a time to gather stones together; A time to embrace, and a time to refrain from embracing; A time to get, and a time to lose; A time to keep, and a time to cast away; A time to rend, and a time to sew; A time to keep silence, and a time to speak; A time to love, and a time to hate; A time of war, and a time of peace. 4 • • • AjU d? To everything there is a season, and with each new season comes strange and exciting memory-makers, as well as the old activities we all enjoy. Seeing old, familiar faces (and some new ones), supporting the team at athletic events, taking a part in a play, working during school hours, and just having fun are all a part of the school year. PIRATE '73 is a re- minder of the past year's activities. It is a remembrance of good times..„ a book of memories. 5 TABLE OF CONTENTS Administration 7 Seniors 2 3 Underclassmen 37 Activities 53 FALL...........53 WINTER.........70 SPRING.........82 SUMMER.........90 Advertising g5 BOARD MEMBERS Doug Thuemmel Edwin Korn Jr. Carl Loewe Venice Clancy Michael Goretski Albin Murawski Martha Thuemmel STUDENT COUNCIL E. She teaches 8th grade Home- making, Homemaking I, II, and III, Advanced Homemaking and Boys Food Preparation., The students are always kept busy as they continually prepare delicious meals, sew away as they try hard to complete beautiful garments, and of course there's always book work and lots of studying. 10 CL A This year the Advanced Homemaking class, under the guidance of Mrs. Parks, con- ducted a preschool nursery class. The youngsters really enjoyed it and were depressed the day it all ended. Commercial Typing I, and II, Bookkeeping, Economics, Consumer Education and General Business classes are all conducted by Mr. Ziehm. Everyone is always kept busy by either typing, adding, writing checks and receipts, or studying insurance. There's always plenty to learn in any business class. The typing classes are really pleased to hear when they're having timed writings and the bookkeeping class just can't wait to record a large pile of transactions. In any case there's plenty of work to get done. 12 SHOP If it's welding you want to learn about ask our shop teacher, Mr. Brooks. Mr. Brooks also teaches metal shop, mechanical drawing, crafts, wood- shop, small motors and 8th grade shop. Whenever the school is filled with a continous terrible smell you know it's coming from the shop room. Mr. Brooks always has plans for the students work each day. You either have to weld, draw, saw away at some boards, varnish, sand, or fix motors. If you're a real mechanic you will enjoy taking one of Mr. Brooks' shop classes. Mathematics Science Our Mathematics and Science Departments have three teachers. They include Mrs. Bomers who teaches Anatomy and Physiology, 7th and 8th grade Science, Biology, and Earth Science. Mr. McLeod teaches General Math, Physics, Chemistry, and Algebra I, and II. Mr. Damen teaches Advanced Math, 7th grade Math, Biology and Applied Math. Al- though Science and Math are two very serious subjects we have our fun times too, as you can see. KEN McLEOD 14 LANGUAGE arts Modular scheduling has enabled us to offer a variety of classes in the Language Arts Department. In for- eign languages, Mrs. Mayes teaches French I and'II and Mr. Schwedler teaches Latin I and II. Mr. Schwedler also has journalism, creative writing, modern poetry and modern novel. 16 Rhetoric I and II, basic grammar, and reading improvement are taught tyy Mrs. Stanek, while Mr. Sturm's classes include Shakespeare, communication arts, and modern poetry. If you need help in the library, both Mrs. Mayes and Mrs. Bomers are always glad to come to your aid. 7 Social Science The Social Science Department, consisting of Mr. Gierhart, Mrs.Stanek and Mr. Schwedler, offers many classes. Mr. Gierhart's schedule includes American history, current events, sociology and first aid. Government I and II are Mrs. Stanek's domain. Mr. Schwedler has critical issues and Humanities. JOYCE STANEK 18 VOC A TIONAL When the second semester began. Port Austin welcomed a new member to its staff, Daniel V. Bennett. Mr. Bennett not only be- came our new (and badly needed) counselor, but he took over the teaching duties for Careers and Home and Family Living classes. He was also a big help when it came to applying for college admission and scholar- ships. ARTS Ct .Xtsm to trtJ LA£a£im4s, . Port Austin does not have an art or music department, but we sure have accomplished a lot. Besides entertaining at assemblies, we have a creative arts and modern poetry class which have revealed much hidden talent. And without Mr. Sturm, none of this would have been possible. GARY E. STURM 20 THESPIANS The National Thespian Society is a new organization at PAHS. It is made up of stu- dents who show an interest and aptitude in theatre. In order to join the club you must have been in at least 2 shows and have accumulated 10 Thespian points. Under the direction of Gary E. Sturm, this organization should prove to be most successful. 21 ANNUAL STAFF 22 Putting an annual together is much harder than most people might think. It takes lots of planning, writing, typing and pasting, (as well as screaming, hair-pulling crying, etc.) But all the work involved is well worth the effort, considering the results! Her court con- sisted of (left to right) Denise Lewandowski, Ann Nimbach, Laurie Mayes and Cheryl Bergquist. This is our 1972 Homecoming. It all be- gan with the building of floats which would be entered in class competition. The entries met at the turn-around to start the day with the Homecoming Parade. The long-awaited half-time found the Pirates leading the Caseville Eagles 6-0. First the floats were judged. The 7th graders were awarded first prize for their float, Sink'em. The 9th and 10th graders were awarded 2nd and 3rd prizes respectively. The half-time festivities were highlighted when Miss Nancy Voss was crowned the new Homecoming Queen of Port Austin. With action resumed, the Eagles went on to defeat the Pirates by a mere 1 point lead, 7-6. Fortunately, everyone looked forward to the Homecoming Dance to be held that night. 58 FOOTBALL Front Row: E. Rynearson, J. Hogan, M. Hatch, D. Jaworski, S. Schmidt, T. Greene, G. Kubitski. This winter we found ourselves working hard at many activities- basketball, a Christmas play, the Winter Carnival, a fashion show, a musical........ The annual Port Austin Winter Carnival was again a big success and helped us all to get through the winter. During the week the classes competed against each other in broomball, barrel push, saucer, kick the keg, and other games. X ft F T| VPiT YT u IS -fr HAM V K K A H II 1 1 kLi 1— . For most it means a season of sunshine and new green leaves. In Port Austin spring brings another super baseball season and another hit play. Spring means dressing up for banquets, commence- ment or the prom. Spring means many things in Port Austin, all of which make it a season to remember. 82 BANQUET S When spring arrives, so do a long series of banquets, and this spring was no exception. Summer marks the end of the school year. Exams, cleaning out lockers, end-of-school parties and picnics, graduation and the Senior Trip com- bine to make these last days both hectic and exciting. Even the teachers marked the end of the school year with a picnic! The luncheon get-together, which included the entire staff (teachers, administrators, board members, janitors, cooks, bus drivers, etc.) was held at the home of Mrs. Dorothy Parks the last week of school. Everyone enjoyed the food, sun and conversation. (We ought to do this more often, yes ?) HELEN M. FULLER The end of school get-together by the PA staff also marked the retirement of Mrs. Helen M. Fuller. Mrs. Fuller has taught third grade at Port Austin for the past 6 years. Before coming to Port Austin, Mrs. Fuller taught for 21 years in various rural schools in Huron County. She and her husband, Frank, plan to just relax and enjoy themselves now that she has retired from teaching. Best wishes Mrs. Fuller--we'll miss you! + 91 Four league titles in five years. . .two district championships. . .a regional trophy. . .and now, one of the highest honors a coach can receive... being named Coach of the Year.
