OUR EXCHANGE STUDENT This year Port Austin High has been fortunate in having its first foreign exchange student. His name is Heinz Westphal, a tall, blue-eyed boy from Heidmuhlen, Germany. Heinz became an exchange student through the Youth for Understanding program which sponsored his trip to the United States. Hellived with his American parents’1 Mr. and Mrs. Robert Thuemmel Sr. Heinz comes from a small town where he lives with his parents, a sixteen year old sister Dorte, and a brother Wilhelm who is ten. Heinz' father owns and operates a general store which adjoins their house. Heinz arrived in the U. S. last September by plane and hasn't had a quiet moment since. He entered the 11th grade here and took the following subjects: American history, U.S. government, trigonometry, algebra, English, and French 11. Besides being an honor roll student, participating in basketball, and playing one of the leads in the junior play (for which part he dyed his hair blond), Heinz spent many hours practicing his violin and performed for various clubs and organizations. He first began takihg violin lessons in Germany when he was thirteen years old and has become quite an accomplished musician in such a short time. Besides being called upon to perform with his violin Heinz was asked several times to speak to various groups about his homeland. This spring Heinz entered the District Solo and Ensemble Festival held at Bridgeport where he played a solo and received a I rating (the highest). This rating enabled him to enter the State Festival which was held at Midland. Even though the State examination was harder than the District, Heinz still came out on top with a score of 90 (another I rating). Because of his high rating he was chosen to go to Interlochen Music Camp for a day with other high school musicians from the state where they formed an orchestra and recorded their concert on record. Heinz' musical adventures don't stop there, however; this summer he spent two weeks at Central Michigan University where he studied music, took violin lessons, sang in a choir, and performed in an orchestra. Between playing engagements and the two-week session at Central, Heinz was able to join the Seniors on their trip to Washington. We enjoyed having him along and we hope he had a good time. When asked how he liked being in the United States Heinz replied, It's a riot. 'It was nice being here. . . .the people here are very friendly. Heinz left Port Austin on July 27 to return to Germany and will finish high school there. In approximately two or three years he plans to return to the U.S. to study at the University of Michigan to earn his Master's degree in language and hopes to travel around the world. Everyone in Port Austin and the surrounding communities has enjoyed having Heinz here for these past 11 months. He has broadened our knowledge of Germany and the European customs and has also made some of us realize how little we know about some of our American customs. We all wish Heinz the very best of success and happiness in the future and we hope he'll come and visit us again. Not good-bye, Heinz, but see you soon. 36 HUMOR 38 ADVERTISING Compliments of Goebel Motor Sales Gerhard W.
