WPY l MG Volume 1X Published Annually by me Senior Class of Ike PORTA ARTHUR HIGH SCHOOI PORT ARTHUR TEXAS PUBLIE LIBRARY lw- II n This ttSeagull is not a masterpiece l T0 lay on the shelf of fame; It is only the record of those days That were neither wild nor tame. An account of our days in school Of which some are happy and some are sad; Pictures of classmates and teachers too, Of whom all are good and none are bad CD Some snapshots of characteristic poses; Department cartoons and such, To which humor and wit have given a hand And art her magic touch. The -e slingers and joke makers too Have a few brilliant pages, That would fill Bill Shakespear with envy And give Ring Lardner the rages. Dear reader, there may be some one part Which you will like better than all the rest, But to us-the staffethere is but one page Which we hold to be the best. On it is written FINIS -E. L. 7' Vl kl f. When I stepped up to speak to him I thought I heard him say, HI am the Faculty vs'rho slaves from morn till night Trying to polish the student7s mind until it shines up bright, Getting kicked here, cussed there, the whole day long By a bunch of students who take Life as a song; Some take me as a joke and laugh provokingly And when I get sore they say, HCmft you take it jokingly?H But each day finds me here to ring the morning boll To teach and preach and keep the students Studying well! , t MR. Welre speedy and bright as the book here will tell, And if you donlt like it you can jump in the well. And now that the book is published at last, We want to assure you our troubles are past, And if you lind a mistake here and. there. Just think what ,twould been if you had been there. The teachers all thought that we loafed 011 the job, But that bunch was fooled like the rest of the mob. So while we were slaving, we stood all the gaff, And since we have finished its our time to laugh We dont like to brag but you 11 have to admit That we ve made a tremendous hit. And now that were safely out of the bog, Will someone step forward and give us the dog? --Harris and Mont. , ,4 A 44541 i748 72;? We are known because We have among us musicians, including Violinists, pianists, and singers, orators. debaters, and poets tnot all musicianst; moreover we are noted for the fact that we have the best Hlines'y in the school. As Freshmen we had a very large class; as Sophomores we had lost a good many of our members who had failed to master their studies, but we were com- pousated for this by acquiring some of tho maturcr minds who were enjoying a second year as Sophomores. Now, as Juniors, we are a real classy for how could we be anything else, after have Hcome, seen and eonqueredt' Caesar, Cicero, geometry, and the other ancients. As for our class organization, on? need only consider our officers, to see how Well our class is run. We had to elect a new president at beginning of the term, for our former president was too occupied with being captain of the foot ball team, and with becoming one of those sedate seniors. Now, not to forecast the weather, for HHe who prophesieth the weathm' in Texas is either a fool or a stranger,H but the forecast for the Senior class of 2.2 is that it will be beyond a doubt the best on record. h VIt K, V21 SOPHMOREJ 47 MARJORIE MILES THOMAS BETZEL ,,,,,,, SOPHOMORE CLASS Purple and Gold Colors: ...... Of enurse there are a few new members but the number is limited. Last year at the Franklin everybody started in with their whole hearts to make good grades. Nearly everyone accomplished their purpose. But what do you suppose they dill? They had an object in View, and that object Was none other than the HoleH P. .H. S. The class of ,24 is the largest class ever known in the history of the Port Arthur schools. There are over two hundred and fifty members. On ae- eount of our class being so large it has been divided into five or six sections. One of the greatest honors ever bestowed on the Freshman class is to have an honor study hall. This honor study hall is in the balcony of the auditorium, and is made u'p of Freshmen only. The students are put up there umirely on their honor. Oh, Yes! the Camp Fire Girls entertained the Freshmen classu This our tm'taiumeut was held in the Cooking rooms, vshieh were decorated in Japanese style. The Camp Fire Girls Were hostesses and were also dressed in Japanese t-Ostume. This was one of the greatest social events of the season. Being suth a large vlass you Wouldnlt think that We Were much of an or- ;mnizod class, but we are. At the first of the term we organized and chose the following officers: Ruth Chesnut,y President; Elizabeth Priehard, Vice-Presi- dent; Helen Dennis, Seereary; Charles McFarland, Treasurer. The class of '24 has just lots and lots of school enthusiasm. At every fnot ball and basket ball game a large number of Freshmen attended Our boys and girls promise to be great foot ball and basket ball stars. There is also a large number of Freshmen taking up some foreig.1 language as Spanish or Latin. So you see they are planning to go to college. All the ciasses that have and will HfinisH before us, and the ones that will Ht'inisH after us will always regret not being a member 01' the wonderful class of '24. -E, M. 22$ 55 56 I think ifs something awful The way this school is run, For with history and algebra We never have much fu 1 Math and Latin, English too An: nothing but a grm nd And Work within a high school Is never hard to fi m1. But why ponder over such? There's nothing more to sta ate; So I 11 not bother, but will grow Resigned unto my fa te 57 In years past Music asla subject in the schools has not been accorded a place of inqmrtunee or responsibility, but this condition is rapidly changing as it bveomus more aml more evident that Music is not only a social requisite but that :15 a subject for study it is a mind trainer par excellence aml fills a place in the curriculum both artistic and practical. The Courses in the Music Department are so planned as to meet the needs of :ill the pupils in the schools. Those who just like to H sing occasionally. the pupils who are studying with private teachers and those who expect to specialize in this field. In the grades the pupil becomes a siglitrreatlor and has several years of music appreciation and an opportunity to prepare for the schools Orchestras and Bands. In the High School the courses cover a much wider smpe of study. The appreciation work is groatly intensified, the singing is Idaho in organizations and includes the best literature for all Voices and the Band 01' Orchestra player has before him four years of instruction and practical experi- ence which constitutes a preparation which will enable him, upon graduation, to gain instant success and recognition in professional circles. The organlva- tions in the grade schools for the coming year will be a thousand Voire Children's Chorus, 3 Junior Orchestra and a Junior Band. These organizations Will be composed of pupils from all the grade schools and will rehearse regularly. The organizations in the High School for the coming year will be the Girls Glue club, the High School Chorus, the Semi-Chorus of twentyvcight picked voices, the Senior Orchestra and the Senior Band. About two hundred fifty students VVCYC enrolled for the various Coursw this year and it is hoped that the number will double in 331-422 58 3W Hr.:u'in: dixisim: hns marlv wmnlmi'ul lu'ngnlm 21ml sumo L vlwnk'H Mwlmnirul Jiruwing fn 1' Ilwir futuru pmfcmium 61 This :lulvarlmmlt has cuminuml tn improxc in h 0 t II output null mluip nu'nt. The needs of the student may be said to be two fold; first, to fit him for suc- ceeding work and second, to teach him to solve such problems as may confront him in after life. We also attach greatimportance to our subject as a means to accustom students to reason and to use judgment and to think through all questions that may be presented to him to their most probable outcome. However, the student will acquire this habit of logical reasoning along with the principles of mathematics much more readily if it is brought to him by problems of immediate interest and use to him. The mathematics that a student will need in later life depends upon a factor no less variable than the vocation that he may choose Consequently it is impos- sible to teach each student just what he will need to knnw. buz we try to base the subject matter of the course as far as possible on the principle of the greatest good to the greatest number. It is unfortunate that the high school student cannot know the needs uf his future and hence must put blind faith in the judgment and sincerity of those who determine what shall constitute the mathematical knowledge that he is asked to acquire. --G S. At the boginning of school seniu Senior girls volunlcered to mmmgx HIP cireulatiou of books in the English Library, but two soon found that they tlitl not have the time so five were leftiDoris Scallon, Elizabeth Vuylstcko. Thelma Campbell, May Alico Walker, and Ina Williams. Mrs. Carter, anxious tn reward the girls in some way for their services, saixl that they might use the fine money as they wished; they voted to give it to the HSeagull. The fall term we had only 616 volumes and many of those were in bad anlitiou, but for the opening of the spring term we had the good fortune to serm-u 423 new books, for the most part additional copies of books already in the library. We have twenty copies of Huckleberry Finn and twenty copies of Tom Sawyer, yet you could count on one hand the number of days when there have been as many as two of these books left'ou the shelf. The English Library has been a great success, but it entails much work and might have had to be abandoned had it not been for the help given by the Senior girls. Spevial credit is to be given to Doris Scallon, who has taken upon her shoulders the bulk of the Work. oVI. E. D. 69 Although two years only is required for History, the enrollment has been quite large as is shown by 1063 out of a total of 1200 for the two terms. To meet the demands of this number it has taken six teachers. First year students are required to take Ancient and Mcdiaevul History while the second year course is Modern History The electives are English History, U. S. History, Civics and Economics. Vitalization of the rccitations has been accomplished through special 1'07 ports, current events, dramatization, games, debates and outside lecturers. All of the classes took advantage of November 2nd to hold their own presidential election. Although party spirit ran high, the Democratic nominee won by a large majority. The general aim in all the courses has been to correlate the present with the past and with this in view to understand more thoroughly American cusV toms, institutionsy and government and to lay deeper foundations for a broader and truer American citizenship. 70 THE HI STORY LIBRARY Thv History Library wmprisos of about fin- huuvh'wl Volumes to tho Mvmoriul Library and tlvaling' dirm'tly with Hm rofm'ourns 11ml reading lists nl' tlu- History courses. BABB Printing Inetrudtor FACTS ABOUT OUR PRINT-SHOP Although there are about fifteen hundred schools in the United States that have printing departments of their own, the Port Arthur Schools are one of very few with a print-shop in an elementary school that is capable of printing their own Annual, besides doing all the print- ing for the entire school district which amounts to several thousand dollars a year. The print-shop is located in the Franklin School, where the class- es in printing are selected from the sixth and seventh grades. Although these boys and girls range in age from 12 to 16 years, they nevertheless take great interest in their work. Of course you could not expect the best class of work in an ele- mentary school printvshop, but taking everything into consideration I think that the Port Arthur schools are causing some to sit up and take notice. tThis book was printed exclusively 0113 10 x 15 C. 8!.
