Vl oulel I ever get there? lhree more long hours on the slow-moving ever-rotking t1 happened. I could not go back to sleep. 1 could do nothing but look out of the misty window into the streets of the small towns, and the forests, on the road from Houston to Beaumont. Beaumont at last! How eagerly I jumped from the train, not yet stopped and ran like mad toward the on- -c0m1ng 111terurban.l got to the cornex just 111 time to get on the crowded em and start my final ride toward my destinationaold Port Arthur, the only city 011 the 11121p,at least to my th1nk1ng. After W aiting half an hour, I espied a seat and quickly seated my tired self in the easy chair. The exciting moment seemed never to come. It se6med that every car the company had had to be passed, and our car had to wait for all of them 10 pass, on the side track. At last I sp1cd the metropolis of the South, Port Arthur, now adorned with imposing sky scrapers and tall smoke stacks, seemed an altogether d1flerent City from the one I had seen 111 the days of nineteen hundred eighteen I got offithere was the same Proctor Street, and by look111g up the avenue I could see the same bridge, the same lake which was famil1ar to me But the business d1str1ct was wonderfully Changed. Even the faces were changed. Now and then a young: man would pass and sm1le, some I thought knew me but were too timid or too u11ecrt21111 to spcal. I put up at the hates Hotely a wonderful struc- ture, and registered as K11. 7 7 After supper I stlolled down to the corner of Lake Ax enue and 9' :ih1rverchXefy 1 ix 3k t:::h::.:214$ KQ$ W Ill nullmn 11.... 2t ? IF 1 V Twenty-first Street, for this was the place where I was directed. There stood a beautiful white mansion, all lighted up as if some company was expected This place was the residence of my dearest friend, Dr. Neal D. Raderi I walked up to the door and rang the bell, and there greeting me with a pretty smile, was a dainty brunette, who introduced herself as Mrs. Rader. Then, before I had the slightest chance to ask for the doctor, out he jumped, right into my open arms. Never before was I shown such sincere hospitality as I was while I was in that household. Wonderful happiness was suggested to me by the doctor and his most charming wife, who, after an hour of two of hold timesfl suggested that we stroll down to see the doctorls friend, Mr. W. R. Prafka HWe are going down to see old Bill, Vera dear; somehow I think he would like to see 1 r. --e1-;g We walked slowly, the doctor and his Wife leading the way, she leaning anxiously and happily on his arm and between the two of us. We still talked of Old times in P. A. H. S. and many fond thoughts were brought back to memory. The doctor soon stopped and pointed to a large house somewhat like his own, and told us that that was the place to which we were going The place was brilliantly lighted up7 and it could be easily seen that it was a very beautiful place, having many pretty shade trees and a wonderful lawn to add to its beauty. There was also an abund- ance of flowers in the conservatory. We walked up to the door and a maid showed us in. She said that Mr. Prafka was in the drawing room and would be in shortly. When he did come in he was surely surprised. NIr. Prafka is now a master builder, having completed his course in Penn State University. As we sat there talking of olden times that brought back fond memories which in turn brought tears of sadness and joy alike, the Doctors wife turned slowly to him and said: IlDearest, donlt letls ever leave old Port Arthur, will you.w I, myself, did not want to leave, and slowly turned away to hide the on-coming tears. ,t1KTJ1H-:::a-, ,1u ' W'1-7N ;; a 4 , xv: xzfj:$ ed? 5? Covered with honors are we, and justly have we deserved lhem. To some they have come without seeking; 10 others they come through hard work. But truly are we delighted, and quite freely now may we show ile Show how we,ve reached this high place, and rest from our four years Of struggle. This is the greatest Of classes, but where are those as Freshmen, Struggled as we with Clippengeris, theris, German, and Sophomores? hrlarried are Ethel and hiary, and we say to them, gYou are de- NIarian, and hr'Iargaret, and Frank have moved, but by no means are forgotten. Allie and Leon are working, and perhaps they are earning good wages. 72- Vance left us to enter the Navy, and the Navy is honored thereby. Others have come and gone; the stories are varied and many. Through four years we7ve hung together, as Freshmen, Sophomores and Juniors. Through four years weive stood our exams, and our credits have 2X caused us no blushing. Through four years have we defended refreshments, whether ours or somebody elsds. And when we have defended7 right heartily have we eaten. VVeN'e tried to keep faith with each Other, and at the same time please our teachers. So have we been for four years, and so do we hope to continue. -- Ax eehedewve tJeV 1...e.:;, v? z, u gxrvr ;: 7W,- ' ,, N wygm , 0y, , .VNw x i z - Laye gwrj :1 ngkg .1 32 t l l. lllllllllllllllllll... ummmmllw But brevity hurries us on to our days as illustrious Seniors. This in brief words is our story, and simple and few arc the events. But lying silent beneath them, like the currents of mighty waters, Arc powerful forces that draw us on the unknown Ocean, The mysterious Ocean called llljifcf where our unknown futures aweut us. Speaking of studies and school work7 we read German and Latin in our leisure hours and solve mathematical problems as a pastime. We are the scientific wonders of the school; also while telling of our many accomplishments, we like to add the gentle art of procuring different luxurious and cooling refreshments. Possibly the reader may think he is learning Of several of our accomplishments7 but none of our faults and that we are rather boastful, but the fact is that our faults are of such little consequence that they are not worth the space it takes to write them. W School days are full of pleasure and they will never be forgotten i but they are not all pleasure and the members of the Junior Class show plainly in their determination to perfect themselves in their studies, so that they may be ready without delay to enter advantage- ously into the worldk work, that they realize that the nationwide t terror now in progress calls for preparedness in every form from every one and that we may render to our glorious nation the help which should be forthcoming from all of us Who are privileged to enjoy the advantages offered by our generous country. In spite of all the terrible predictions of our prede- cessors, we are brave and our hopes run high. Through all the stages of our Prep and Freshmen years we have ilput it overii our sister classes. When the demand for ticket selling arose, it was to our class the prize would have been given for Archie more than held up the reputation of our class. A short time before the close of our Prep year, our class bought the American flag which now flies from the pole 0n the campus, and presented it to the school as the doors of High School were opened to us. We also put in both Prep and Freshmen commissioners con- trary t0 the wishes of our sister classes. At the opening of our Freshmen term, we decided to devote our time principally to our studies. As a result of this resolution we have produced one or more stars in each of the dillerent phases of the High School course. Russel is famous for his ability in working math. Louis and Walter are noted for their Mechanical Drawing, while Miriam is unequaled for fluency in Latin. Elbert and Myrl are our musicians, while Elizabeth and a great many others are our versatile students. Some of these same stars which now can scarcely be seen above the horizon of life, will one day rise into prominence and illuminate the whole world. R. This class should be of interest to us especially on that ac- count alone if not for other reasons too numerous to mention. Other classes boast of their musicians, their great orators, and other members equally as important to the welfare of a class, but we are known well enough so that a boast from us is not needed. We do not want you to believe that We want to take everything for granted and say that we are ili but we do wish it understood that we are equally as important as our sister classes. As a rule the Prep class is not noticed in High School, because its members do not participate in the regular rounds of athletics and because they are just llPrepsW The things which bring them into popular favor with older pupils are: Their future prospects for athletic A material, their society members, and their progressive members in all departments of the High School curriculum. We have them all and are justly proud of them, for to them we owe all of our future glory and our future recognition among the halls of Port Arthur High School fame. We owe them a great deal as it is and if they are as enthusiastic in future years as they are now in all branches, we will win out as one of the most glorious classes of the day. We hope to compete with the honors and records set by the present Senior class and to try to exceed them in all ways as far as it is deemed necessary and as far as the things they did can be improved.
