Glann, plans for the education, recreation, and gen- eral welfare of the students in School District Seventeen. The student body and public, well satisfied with the job the board has done, are proud of the great achievements instituted and carried out in our district. VVe truly ap- preciate the efforts that they have put forth to solve our many problems. The results of the school bond election conducted last year by the board show that the people of our district have confidence in our school administration and will back it in its fine endeavors. Due credit must be given to all who have assisted the school board in its work. As a result of the bond election, work will start this fall on a new junior high school and a new junior college. The junior college will be a complete col- lege unit with classrooms, laboratories, stu- dent commons, and oflices for the administra- tion and faculty. The college will open in September, l96l, with an estimated enroll- ment of 130 freshmen students. The junior high school, to be located at 14th and D Streets, will contain eleven class- rooms, a multipurpose room for physical edu- cation, a music building, a cafeteria, a library, and an ollice and auxiliary facilities. lt will serve the students living west of Valley Street who now attend Lincoln, Hamilton, Dry Creek, and Queen of Angels elementary schools. lt is planned to institute the same educational program and services now pro- vided for pupils at Roosevelt Junior High School. This year the local district employed its first foreign exchange teachers-Dr. Kurt bletz of Germany and Nlr. Williani Addinall of Australia. The purpose of the exchange teacher plan is to improve international under- standing, to enrich the lives of children by bringing them in contact with teachers from foreign lands, and to aid in the improvement of instruction by learning something of the educational methods used in other countries. Altogether through the efforts of these leaders of our district, we have attained a reputation of which we may well be proud. This mock leg- islature has Worked to develop many line lead- ers and has been able to accomplish some very worthwhile activities. The council, now a member of the Na- tional Assembly of Student Councils, had the leadership of two able presidents. Larry Fish, who served for part of a semester, turned his duties over to Vice-president Jim Little in January. The council's perennially big event, Home- coming, was larger than ever in 1959. Gen- eral chairman Sherrilyn Hunt had much to do with reviving the old traditions of the serpentine and victory fire. The added stu- dent spirit sent our team to a surprising vie- tory over Kelso. The qualities of leadership were encour- aged in all the councills activities. Four dele- gates- Kathy Driscoll, Kay VVillson, Bill Robb, Larry Fish-represented our school at a leadership training conference in Seattle November 13th and 14th. Through such activities as our facultyls evaluation of the council and representatives, the ASB was able to lend a helping hand in the training of many of tomorrow's leaders. STANDING: J. C. The members of this class have worked hard and may well be proud of the fine job they have done. Of course the highlights of these years are the class pro- jects and social activi- ties. Their first senior high school underta- king occurred as Soph- omores when they spent many hours working on their home- coming float, Tomorrowlandf' The soph- omore hop, Moonlight and Cupid, suc- ceeded this and certainly showed their versa- tility and made apparent their ability. A first for the Class of 360 was their sponsorship of the first big dance in the new gymnasium. Venus, Goddess of Love, surely watched the couples attending the ju- nior prom as they danced in a mythological Sandy Johnson, s atmosphere. Birth of the Blues will always hold fond memories for this class as that was the theme of their j u n i o r homecoming float. The successful seni- or year will be the most cherished. To be- gin with, the cl as s placed first in the an- nual A.S.B. drive with 94-.6WJ. ln the home- coming parade their slightly wet but origi- nal float, Have Sea- horse, VVill Float, placed first. In bidding farewell, the Class of '60 presented Sayonara as the theme of their senior ball. An exotic mood prevailed in the oriental setting. The efforts of their senior class advisors, Miss Sheeley and Mr. Samuelson, have helped to make this year very successful. ass president And now, as farewells are said, We wish the seniors success and happiness. JUNIORS---that's us l With the group of lively individuals who are juniors, one can hardly expect anything but an active, hard-working class. Further- more, that is exactly what they are. Thief of the Deep, their homecoming float, placed a close second in the competi- tion and was the first big class project. The juniors may well be proud of not only this but also of their class princesses-Pam Farr and Helen O'Neill-who could be seen rid- ing regally upon the royalty float. VVhen the time drew near for the Junior Prom, the members of the class could be seen working diligently on what was to become a fabulous dance. Under the leadership of Jeannie lVIeyer and her committee chairmen, visors. Dillian, treasurer: Marie Brcckeli, vice-presidenl. Southern Shadows made its debut on April 9th, Reigning over the event were Queen lVlarie Brackett, King Jon Norris, Duchess Elsie Kruth, and Duke John Selby. Contributing their able guidance to the class were the officers J. C. Kilmer, presi- dent: Marie Brackett, vice-president: Mary Luedke, secretary: and Butch Dillian, treas- urer. Much of the credit for a very successful year goes to Miss Evelyn Solheim and Mr. Boyd Page, the class advisers. As a last undertaking, the juniors put on the Senior Breakfast as a tribute to the class that has gone before. Following this the class of '61 will move onward and upward, leaving their achievements behind, but carry- ing their memories With them. 1961 The iuniors mee? fo plon their homecoming fiom, The Thief of 1he Deep. FRONT ROW: Sherri Wallace, treasurer: Poi Haggerty, vice-presidentg Cherie Simpkins, secretary. The thought of coming back to school in the fall of 1959 was in the minds of everyone this year, but even more so, it had a big ef- fect on the up-and-coming sophomores. The expressions on the newcomers' faces were ones of awe as they took their first glance at the PASHS campus. After a couple of days getting used to their new surroundings, the sophomores settled down to undertake their first achievement for the coming year. As it turned out, they took second place in the an- nual ASB drive. Every class has many responsibilities and many activities it carries out during its three years in high school, and the sophomores soon found themselves busy again helping our school. After taking second place in the drive, a third place was achieved on their home- coming tioat, Serpent of the Sea. Contributing their capable abilities this year were the class oflicers Jerry Hogan, president: Pat Haggerty, vice-president: Cheri Simp- kins, secretary: and Sherri VVallace, treasur- er, who guided their class through an unfor- gettable year. Also we must not forget Mr. John Kays and Miss Bethel Uestman, the class advisors, who deserve a great deal of credit for this class's achievements. As the sophomore year comes to an end, we will all be looking forward to the coming events and accomplishments of this class in their future two years at PASHS. 1962 You meun he cxcfuolly said that about me? Finishing the season rated eighth in the state, the Roughriders lost only to fourth-ranked liverctt, and achieved their fourth straight Olympic League title. After losing our first game of the year to livcrett in the driving rain, the Riders lin- ished the remainder of the season undefeat- ed, scoring a total of 357 points to become the top scoring AA team in the state. We will always remember our homecom- ing game in which Angeles, with the help of hard-running Mike Briggs and Sonny Luke and the passing ability of Gary Gagnon, Millon, Richard Deane, J .C. Kilmer. The Roughriders, dominating the All- I-eague team this year, placed six on the mythical eleven. On the line were Mike Mac- donald, Ed VVallace, Jack Estes, and for the second straight year, Al Messersmith. Mike Briggs, All-League end last year, and Sonny Luke, for the third straight year, were our representatives in the backlield. Our school is also proud of Ed VVallace and Sonny Luke who placed guard and halfback respectively on the All-State second team. With juniors playing much of the season and gaining valuable experience, our football future looks bright. One of the most exciting struggles of the year was the league playoff game with the Black Knights from East Bremerton. lt was witnessed by over two thousand cheering fans in our gym. The score was tied seven times and the lead changed hands ten times in the hectic contest with the final score Gary Gagnon. reading 52-48 in our favor. Mike Briggs, center, with 286 points and Ntinos Kravas, guard, with 244 points were high scorers for the season. The same two Roughriders were elected to the Olympic League's all-opponent basketball team. The two Port Angeles men were the only two se- lected from the north Olympic Peninsula. Roughrider chances for a championship team for next season will be lessened by the graduation in June of eleven lettermen, but the fresh talent from the Ranger squad could be a real threat.
