Through the efforts of our capable super- intendent and the school board, a long' awaited event, the ground breaking ceremony for the high school, took place last fall. Desperately in nccd of a new school, the students of RHS are looking forward with joy 'to attending classes in the spacious rooms of the new building. The chief of the clan is, of course, our dis- trict superintendent, Mr. John illann. Upon him fall all the problems and decisions of the supervision of the six schools of District 17. Mrs. Ringer, his secretary, spends a good deal of time in keeping up the district 's records and correspondence. Our new business manager, Mr. Donald Sleeper is responsible for 'the business and financial management of the school district. Assisting him with this difficult task .is his efficient secretary, Mrs. l+'ergnson. N Mr. Ray Warren, principal. Mr. Ray Warren, our understanding prin- cipal, attends to our class schedules, confers with us about our curriculum problems, and on the noon of January 23, Ray was seen glee- fully throwing snowballs at some of the braver students. New on the staff is co-ordinator, Mr. Beeler, who works with the teachers in arranging their curriculum. Much of the time of Miss Cowling, Girls' Advisor and head of the English department, is spent in administering I. Q. tests and assisting students with their vocational problems. Her suggestions and help have been responsible for the success of many of our graduates. Another hard working advisor is Mr. John Driscoll, Boys' Advisor and head basketball coach. He counsels with the boys on their prob- lems and has the difficult task of keeping order in the halls. 9 uidin' hand 1s'r Row Mr. Jim Sulencs: Study, math, assistant football coach, Mr. Paul Meinke: English, history, reading. 2ND Row Mr. Allan Divine: Automotives, Mrs. Haldora Dwight: Study hall and cafe supervisor. ann Row ' Mr. A. FIRST SEMESTER STUDENT COUNCIL Way back in September, the Student Coun- eil began its work under the capable leadership of Gordon Fee. Assisting him was his efficient staff: Lois Grady, vice-president, Beverly Gull- stein, secretary, Myrna Berg, treasurer, Dor- othy Halberg, fire-ehiefg and Patt Knott, cor- responding' secretary. Projects such as bringing the school out of debt, having more and better assemblies, ways of promoting pep at games, the point system, the sale of ASB tickets, and many other prob- lems were thrashed out by the Student Body officers and representatives, supervised by Mr. Driscoll. Gordon's gavel of authority was wielded wisely throughout the year. Through his per- sonality and capability he has made a place for himself in the heart of every Roosevelt student. A leader not only in his presidency, but in sports and scholastic standing as well, Gordon has proven to he one of the really outstanding students to ever graduate from RHS. guardian of 1ST ROW: Marilyn Halberg, Marianne Neer, Beryle Evenson, Gerry Goodman. 2ND ROW: Judy Nelson, Shirley Byrd, Carol Loghry, Shirley Williams 3RD ROW: Nancy McLaughlin, Judy DeRousie, Karen Sund, Pat Nelson, Howard Chapman. 4TH ROW: Connie Hoare, Jim McFadden, Marilyn Heckman, Barbara Levy. 5TH ROW: Jim McCreight, Oxzden Pierson, Bob Shideler, John Halberg. A. springzin' into action under the clever guidance of its presi- dent, Betty Tatom. Assisting her in her many duties were Nancy McLaughlin, vice-president, and Pat Dotson, secretary-treasurer. As advisor of 'these lively lasses, Miss Margaret O'Neil1 did much to help the girls attain their goals, good health and good sportsmanship. Rising- faithfully at the break of dawn, these feminine athletes received their scratches, bruises and sore muscles at their early morning turnouts. The four major sports are volley- ball. basketball, specdball, and baseball. In adclition to these top four, many girls par- ticipate in pine-pong, badminton, archery, and various other minor sports. All this is not without reward. Any girl who turns out for the four major sports is entitled to a green chevron. The G.A.A.crs also receive points for playing in the various tournaments, having doctor and dental exam- inations, hiking, skating, skiing, swimming and many other activities. Through hard Work and much planning during the summer, editor-in-chief, PAT NEL- SON, not only came up with good ideas but carried them out thoroughly. Helping Pat carry out those ideas and expounding on her own was NANCY MCLAUGHLIN, assistant editor. Ahh you-all list 'nin'? That was our jolly and capable advisor, MRS. THYRA MIDDLE- TON, shouting in her familiar Southern drawl. Mrs. Middleton spent a great deal of mental anguish watching deadlines approach and pass. Without her guidance and forbearance the TUM TUM could never have been produced. GORDON FEE was our cheerful and bril- liant business manager. No one would trade jobs with LOIS GRADY junior-senior editor, who had the task of per- suading the seniors and juniors to pay for their pictures. Lois also was the staff's secretary. PATT KNOTT, copy editor, had the tiring task of checking and rearranging the articles that go into this book. The clever art work throughout the TUM TUM is the product of our capable art editor. here's your tum tum ,Nv- 3 49' :uv my X X if .truly X4 - r I lv W. As the staff photographer she worked many long hours on perfecting pictures for the TUM TUM. Her industrious assistant, GEORGIA TINK- HAM, was an all around asset to the staff. The little girl putting exhausting hours of hard work on the mounting of pictures was BEVERLY GULIISTEIN. Bev could be found in room 205 before, during, and after school bent over the arduous task of measuring and cutting the pictures. Learning the ropes for next year's work is DONNA HEFIJEY, l3cv's able assistant. CAROL LOGHRY had the job of getting the business men of Port Angeles to put their ads in our annual. RICH SHIDELER was responsible for thc surging sales. The pretty blond who had the tedious task of identifying all the students in pictures was SHIRLEY SETHER, identification cditor. The annual dramatic cluh initiation is always a source of discussion and excitement around the school. This year the club outdid itself in subjecting the new members to a stren- uous, but hilarious, ordeal of paint smearing and sea-weed. A formal dinner initiation was held for them at a later date. The latftcr was effectively carried out with a beautiful candle- light ceremony. Another project of the eluh was sponsoring the Teddy Guide, our school telephone direc- tory. This was an innnediate success and over five hundred copies were sold to students and teachers.
