With only one of the three seniors a letterperson, the Gator Girls had to rely heavily on Juniors. Although they didn’t win all their games, the girls played well and the younger girls gained much valuable experience. The season was topped off by the Banquet, during which many secrets that help boost the team moral were revealed to the enlightenment of many guests 4 6 1. Sal goes inside. 2. The Gator Griddlers had a fine season this year, winning all their home games and compiling a 6-3 record. Under the coaching of Mr. Borro and Mr. Saiers, the team's line and backfield performed exceptionally well. The line was composed of many experienced Seniors, and the backfield was filled with Juniors the most notable being Barry Bova, who rushed for an unprecedented 1043 yards. The team should be congratulated for a winning season which filled the entire school with pride and spirit. . V 1. Marty goes around the end. 2. Ron drops back to pass. 3. The line clears a hole. 4. This year’s Homecoming was the highlight of the football season. Many people were instrumental in the success of the parade, game, and dance. Students from each class worked many long hours on their floats, resulting in fine floats representing every class. The band roused up spirit by playing well during the parade, the opening ceremonies, and at the halftime. The cheerleaders decorated the school and the bleachers with many colorful and spirited posters. The Gators responded to the school’s enthusiasm and won an impressive 34-0 victory over Allegany. The Student Council capped the evening with an enjoyable dance, with the music provided by the excellent Bernie Milton Band. The dance was highlighted with the crowning of Gary Barnard and Marti Johnson as King and Queen. 12 14 15 BAND 17 I.U. 9 BAND 18 J.V. FOOTBALL Left to Right-Back to Front: Francis Strubel. Unfortunately, it is impossible to record all the exciting events which transpired during the year or to congratulate and recognize all the people who participated in those many events. Through the events and people pictured in this review, the Tiger Lily Staff dedicates this yearbook to all the faculty members and students who have made everyone proud of the accomplishments of Port High. The Year In Review begins with last year’s outstanding Rifle Team. The four-man team of Brian Jestes, Bob Bosworth, Bob Culver, and Larry Boudon won the Class B National Championship and the Pennsylvania Sharpshooter Championship, while Brian captured the Pennsylvania High Sharpshooter Award. This summer. Port’s Swim Team won the Tri-County Division Two Swim League Trophy, completing the season with a 4-0 record. • Ht % Is N- • M ■««•■ mvi I. The new band front. 2. The football co-captains, Gary Barnard and Dirk Taylor, with the Oil Can Trophy. 3. The FFA Officers: Mark Senyo, Dave Lapp. Bill Kinney, Kirt Saulter, Tom Hurd, Chris Landes, and Jim Colwell. 4. Barry Bova, on his way to a new record. The FFA organization was very active throughout the spring and summer, it’s members capturing many top awards in state- and county-wide competitions. As fall approached, the football season began. A new outlook dawned, as the football team and all its supporting groups looked forward to the first winning season in six years. A new band front was added to the band, enhancing and enlarging it, and adding to the band’s very entertaining half-time performances. The football team’s winning ways gained the ownership of the Oil Can Trophy for the first time in nine years. One of the outstanding members of the football team was Barry Bova, who rushed for an unprecidentcd 1,053 yards. Port Allegany is proud and happy to have had two exchange students over the past year. Admired and liked by all who knew him, Brazilian Jose Moura will be remembered as one of the most active and well-liked exchange students to ever visit Port. He participated on the track and football teams, the first exchange student ever to do so. He always had a smile and a good word for everyone he met. Our new exchange student, Lola Weller from Australia, arrived just before Jose’s departure. She quickly adapted to the people of Port Allegany and has made many friends. She is also taking an active part in many activities and is becoming very well-known and liked throughout the School. It is hoped that her stay here will be a continually happy one. This year’s Boy’s Basketball Team did very well, advancing to the playoffs after a successful season. With an all-Junior starting line-up, the players gained much experience which will benefit them greatly next year. Our It’s Academic Team also did well, advancing to the second round of competition before being defeated in a close contest. Eric, Larry and Dirk were well-supported by the other very enthusiastic members of the group. Due to fuel shortages in Coudersport, the I.U. 9 Band Festival was transferred from there to Port on a last-minute notice. Mr. Moyer and his band members responded extremely well to the demands of hosting a festival, making housing and eating arrangements for the visiting students. Preparations went well and the festival provided the community with an excellent musical performance. 1. The Basketball Co-captains: Barry Bova and Don Barnard. 2. The It’s Academic Team; Dirk Taylor, Eric Carlson, and Larry Boudon. 3. The I.U. 9 Band members. Competing at District Chorus for placements, six members of Port's delegation won chairs and the honor of participating in the State Chorus. This is the first time that Port has ever sent six students at one time to state Chorus, a testament to the dedication and talent of Mrs. Dunn and her students. The two Seniors of the group, Eric Carlson and Brad Frison, attended State Chorus last year. They also achieved the honor of becoming National Merit Scholarship Finalists, the first time Port High has ever had two in the same year. This winter, after long and diligent practice. Chip O'Malley broke the Pennsylvania Indoor Shotput Record by almost four feet with a toss of sixty feet, seven inches. A few weeks later. Chip placed third in the All-Eastern Track Meet held in Princeton, N.J. So ends the Year In Review. In this and the regular yearbook, we have tried to capture the spirit and enthusiasm of Port High and its students and faculty. We hope everyone enjoys this yearbook and hope that it will stir vivid memories for years to come. 1. The State Chorus members: Phyllis Bennett, Mrs. Dunn, Lor-, raine Phalon, Don Horne, Brad Frison, Doug Horne, and Eric Carlson. 2. Chip with one of his medals.
