Because of their accomplishments, our graduating class feels that it is one of the best classes. Other classes in the school feel that their groups, too, are ex- ceptional. This is a good attitude to have and should be characteristic of all groups. We feel that we have good classes, and a good school because of our par- ents, our homes, our churches, and our teachers. They instill a wholesome com- petitive spirit into both the players and students. No school life is complete with- out the existence of athletics, both inter- scholastic and intramural. Athletics should be integrated into the school program, but must be recog- nized as an extracurricular activity and must not be allowed to defer us from the basic purpose of any school, study. We, the Senior Class of 1959, pre- sent the Tiger Lily, the pictorial history of our faculty, our classes, our activities, and our athletics of the 1958-1959 school year. Incorporated into the history is the school philosophy, the written record ofthe ideas and ideals of the faculty and school administration. 14 11131- Contents Faculty 16 Board of Education, Administration, Teachers, and Employees. Although she was only here CI little over two and a half years, she made many friends. Enrolled in the Academic course, she main- tained a high scholastic record. She was a dili- gent worker and a capable artist. Barbara could truthfully be called, with no stretch of the im- agination, a bundle of energy. She loved ath- letics. She was an active member of the Art Club, the Senior High Dramatics Club, Press Club, and Girl's Tumbling Club. She also participated in the Junior Class Play. At the end of her Junior year, Barbara was looking forward to being on the Yearbook Staff. She was especially interested in the lay-out and art work. We, the members of the Senior Class, feel that this book would not be complete without a memoriam to our classmate. IN MEMORIAM ,ilk . K. T. Ireland, Treasurer, D. Ellis, Vice-President, J. The banquet, held in the cafeteria preceding the dance, was attended by over two hundred people. After the dinner, the theme of the Prom was intro- duced in the lobby of the gym. The lobby was decorated as an interior of an airliner. As everyone stepped off the airplane, onto Cl colorful tropical isle, they were welcomed by Hawaiian girls with leis. This, coupled with the blue and white decorations, created the atmosphere for the theme which was Blue Hawaii. Climaxing the evening was the crowning of the queen. Barbara Ray- mond was chosen to be the queen of the 1958 Prom, and was crowned by Bob Ireland, Junior class president. The queen's attendants were from l. to r.: Mitzi Markovs, Helen Abbey, Lois Town- send, Georgia Lilly, and Joyce Wilcox. i w I 1 w I I x 'n I 4 2 Q 3 ? The 1958 Football Team Our '58 football campaign began with a series of disappointments. The team lost three of their first four games. Perhaps the most dis- mal loss of the season was to Emporium whom the Gators have not defeated since i95'I. Fol- lowing the Emporium game, the Gators ielled. They won four and tied one of the last five games. Undoubtedly, the hardest fought battle of the season was the Olean game. The Gators sur- prised the favored Huskies and played a very spirited game. This game was definitely a moral victory for the underdog Gators. After a scoreless opening quarter, Olean took a 7-O lead. ln the third quarter, a five yard pass play climaxed a sixty-four yard drive by the Gators and ties the score 7-7. ln the final quarter, Tur- ner intercepted a pass and behind good block- ing ran 85 yards for a touchdown. Olean scored two plays before the game ended. They failed 84 to convert and the game ended in a T3-T3 dead- lock. This year's grid campaign ended perfectly with Port's overwhelming victory over the Smethport Hubbers. From the first play of the game, an 88 yard pass, the Gators completely dominated the playing field. For the first time in the history of Port Alle- gany football the Winged-T formation was put into use. The Winged-T is basically the same as the Single Wing except that the quarterback handles the ball at the beginning of each play. The new formation proved to be a success. This success resulted from long hours on the practice field and hard work by both the coaches and the players. What success the team had was the result of team effort, however, the names Turner, Berg, Jewart, and the defensive line received the most recognition. I I I I I St. Morys ,.., Otto ,........ Freshman members look for their second year with greater anticipation. They were Jim Tur- ner, a 6' 4 Senior and Ralph Berg, a 6' 5 Jun- ior. To round out the starting tive, Mr. Witowski chose Duane Gregg, a 6' 3 Sophomore, along with Duane Jewart and Fred Briggs, both of whom were Seniors. The Gators compiled CI 'I6-5 record during the course of the season. Through hard work and a will to win, they regained the Northern Tier Championship with a fine 8-O record. The team found competition tough in the Mt. League and as a result, lost four of their games here. However, the Gators played well and were a team to be proud of throughout the season. .lim Turner and Ralph Berg were named as our representatives on both the North Tier and Allegany Mountain League All Star teams. 90 N Ralph Berg Jim Turner Berg scores wiih ca iump shot in the Otto game.
