Through the four long years of high school Mid the scenes we know so well, As the mystic charm to knowledge We vainly seek to spell. Or we win athletic victories On the football field and track, Still we work for dear old Port Hi The Orange and the Black. Jovciz ELOISE WYKOFF SENIOR CLASS HISTORY At last we are Seniors and about to graduate. It does seem a little strange that we are about to leave, doesn't it? just try to remember back through the grades, when we started in the iirst grade and climbed through the first four grades. Then to the fifth where we were given home- Work. How thrilling to be big enough to do homework! Those were our first thoughts. Aha! But then came the afterthought, homework, bah! Why did it have to come to this? Then we marched onward to the junior High. What big shots! Seventh graders now. Remember those days when we could see Mr. Rathgeber sneaking through the halls trying to catch someone misbehaving so he could discipline them with his beloved paddle? Oh, happy days! Then to the ninth grade. The wheels of the Junior High. Every one so thrilled. just think, next year we will go to the Senior High! Yes, but just think back to the early days of Senior High. Living that gay dog's life of the cheerful Sophomore. Initiation, initiation, and then for a change a little more initiation -the happy days of which we were so fond. lt really wasn't quite as bad as all that, though it did seem so at the time. Then, oh yes, then to be the carefree, fun-loving junior. Not a bad life at all. Not to have to bother with any initiation. Have a good time. Then you undertake to put on a Prom for the Seniors. You think, Gee, I hope we can put on a good one! In the end, however, everything is fine and you feel sure that your Prom was just a little bit better than last year's. And to be sure, it probably was. And next, oh, joy! We become the monstrous, almighty Senior! Let me tell you the thrill it is to become a Senior. You think you are a big shot, but you really aren't. The only thing different is you are working like mad trying to raise enough money to put out a Yearbook. Finally, however, you accomplish the task and you are all through. Of course there is one other thing different when you are a Senior. You know, or at least you hope, that you won't be back next year. Sh! But that is where I started. So you see, it is just one vicious circle all through life. Remember that! Good-bye and good luck, under classmen! twenty-seven twenty-eight SENIOR HONORS AND AWARDS NATIONAL HONOR SOCIETY Gwili Barrho Wanita Pritt Elaine Douvlos Joseph Buckheit Richard Turner McKEAN COUNTY MUSICAL FESTIVALS COUNTY BAND Gwili Barrho Constance Lyons Ruthella Spencer jean Cooper Robert Robbins COUNTY CHORUS Constance Lyons Mary Puhl Wanita Pritt joseph Buckheit Gwili Barrho Daniel Martucci Robert Robbins DISTRICT BAND Constance Lyons Robert Robbins DISTRICT CHORUS Gwili Barrho Constance Lyons CURTIS PUBLISHING COMPANY CERTIFICATES Daniel Barren JoAnn Hugill Gwili Barrho Betty Johnson Jacqueline Bosworth Constance Lyons Joseph Buckheit Walter Palm Jean Cooper Wanita Pritt Elaine Douvlos Robert Robbins Gary Gamble Mary Shelley Joseph Herger Ruthella Spencer Richard Turner AWARDS TO BE ANNOUNCED AT COMMENCEMENT ROTARY MATH PRIZE , COMMERCIAL PRIZE CAwarded by Rotary Clubj CAwarded by American Extract Co.J Bausch 85 Lomb Science Award I l nh Im ilu Hilllil, J. Here we are at last. We have climbed the eleven steps and are at last Juniors. It sccmcd like wc would ncvcr get here. These past eleven years have been hard years, but they have been fun too. VVhen we think back to all the things we have done together, it is almost unbelievable. Our class is a very cooperative one. When there is anything to be done, we stick together and do it, with our class president, Ray Luce, in the lead. We have made many mistakes in the past, but we have learned and are learning. still Jeepers, the football season is over already and the wonderful banquet that goes with it. In fact, basketball is well on its way. Hay, fellas, keep your eyes off those out of town cheer leaders. Midyears are over Cthank heavenj. Now everyone is working like mad on our junior Play, which by the way, is A Date with Judy. The Prom, the big dance of the year, is just around the corner. Hope to see you all there. Pardon. me, did I hear some one say it took a lot of work, only nine years of it, but after reaching your destination, you've accom- plished something? At our first thought of being in Senior High we feel grown up. We have trouble with our lockers. . .Gee, they just don't seem to work. . .When we go into Assembly, the Seniors clap their hands. Then after initiation we know that we are going to take our own places and respect the Seniors. For our class flower and color we certainly picked out something different, and we chose a motto that will take quite a bit of hard work to live up to. We've elected officers and we picked a good President-Richard Johnson, Vice-President-Charles Ross, Treasurer-Lois Chandler, and Secretary-Jack Wetmore, so we expect to get a lot done. We've already had a dime dance and plan to have others, but our real accomplishment will be the Sophomore Hop and we feel sure it will be a big success. Many of our fellows will be the new football stars, and we are looking forward to a good team. The year certainly has gone fast. Midterms. . .finals, and report cards. Chalk talks, blocking, tackling, and fundamentals were stressed during the two week stay at camp and the Gators returned fit and ready for their eight game schedule. After winning the first two games from the Bradford J.V.'s and Otto Township, the Gators slumped and in the remaining six games lost their poise and ability to iight, as previous Port elevens had done. Injuries played an important part in the losses suffered near the season's end. To Captain joe Buckheit, and the other Gator seniors, we wish the best of luck in all undertakings. The main course of the dinner consisted of sauerkraut and stuffed pork chops. After eating, the members gave presents and played games. The main object of the Club this year is to work on the nature trail which is located on Old Baldy. We are planning on purchasing an instrument for writing names on the plaques. The raising of the money for this will be done by having a baked-food sale. We are hoping to accomplish a great deal of work on the nature trail. Skok, P. Cooper, W. EDITORIAL This year's Tiger Lily, like all truly good yearbooks, is written with the hope that in future years, the graduating class of 1948-49 may thumb through .its pages and recall fond memories and lasting friend- ships acquired during their high school days. As you know, America has al- ways been noted for its ability to smile in the face of hardships and to put down sorrow with its good humor. The humor was put into this book to do just that: to relieve that tension caused by our coun- try's .present state. Although the road has not been too hard, and 'competition not too keen here at Port Allegany High School, we hope that together as a unit we will look back on our mistakes and laugh. And so members of the class of 1948-'49, we give you this 26th volume of the Tiger Lily with the sincere hope that we may have at least fulfilled your expectations. Remember how lost we felt this afternoon as we entered the big building. It was really nice of the faculty advisers to greet us as we came in, but I still don't understand the hand- cuffs. As Iwas saying, Diary, my teach- ers are nice and I must look intelli- gent because they put me in Mr. Poole's home room. He gives free Lessons on How to :Play Football to all the boys, and How to be Good Supporters to all girls. I hear all this is a big honor for a new student. It's swell of all seniors to let me respect them with Yes, Sir and No, Sir , for as they said it keeps me brushed up on my manners. I got a lucky break on my first trip to study hall. The, instructor sent me to the office so I could study better. Well, Diary, I'll have to end now, for. I registered under the wrong name so I have to go back to the office again.
