a YORKTOWN DAY OCT. 19 1981 7 a .. Li YORKTOWN DAY On Oct. 19, 1781, the British forces under Lord Cornwallis surrendered to Washington in York- town, Va., 200 years later, President Reagan de- clared Oct. 19, 1981 a state holiday, Yorktown Day. The festivities began Friday, Oct. 16 with a parade including marching bands from as far as Mass., New Jersey, and Maine which represented the countries of Scotland, England, and the United States and France. Poquoson High School Marching Band and other schools made fine performances to contribute to the festivities. Other activities included demonstrations by the U.S. Coast Guard, the French and U.S. Navy and a re-enactment of mock colonial battlefield skir- mishes. A visit by President Reagan proved a high- light on this holiday and a dramatic fireworks display over the Yorktown monument provided a special entertainment for thousands of spectators. The battlefields were covered by more than the thousands of colonial participants, they played host to many displays of food, acres of pup tents, and the hundreds of unforgettable porta-potties. One display clearly showed higher and more su- perior than the rest: an enormous hot air balloon with scenes of the American Revolution depicted upon. it. The festival left a lasting impression upon all and we are counting the years until, in 2081, we can all once again share in the remembrances of York- town Day. Ke)
