Li YORKTOWN DAY On Oct. 19, 1781, the British forces under Lord Cornwallis surrendered to Washington in York- town, Va., 200 years later, President Reagan de- clared Oct. 19, 1981 a state holiday, Yorktown Day. The festivities began Friday, Oct. 16 with a parade including marching bands from as far as Mass., New Jersey, and Maine which represented the countries of Scotland, England, and the United States and France. Poquoson High School Marching Band and other schools made fine performances to contribute to the festivities. Other activities included demonstrations by the U.S. Coast Guard, the French and U.S. Navy and a re-enactment of mock colonial battlefield skir- mishes. A visit by President Reagan proved a high- light on this holiday and a dramatic fireworks display over the Yorktown monument provided a special entertainment for thousands of spectators. The battlefields were covered by more than the thousands of colonial participants, they played host to many displays of food, acres of pup tents, and the hundreds of unforgettable porta-potties. One display clearly showed higher and more su- perior than the rest: an enormous hot air balloon with scenes of the American Revolution depicted upon. it. The festival left a lasting impression upon all and we are counting the years until, in 2081, we can all once again share in the remembrances of York- town Day. Ke) Freshmen Float HOMECOMING 61-62 For the first time in years the night of the Poquoson High School Homecoming was beautiful. The Homecoming Court and float proces- sion took place during halftime. Monica, Holoway won the title of home- coming queen. The Juniors won the float contest with their Halloween theme “Don’t Come Crying To Mummy!” The second place winners were the Seniors with their theme “Bubble, Bubble, Panthers In Trouble!” The Islander football team edged Bruton with the victory score 7-6 ... COE refers to a teaching method in an occupational preparation program of vocational educa- tion whereby students alternate their school schedule between in-school and on-the-job learning experiences. During the school day, students take required ac- ademic subjects, a class related to their occupational preparation program, and are provided released time from school for on-the-job instruction. Students receive instruction on the job in the occupational areas of their career choices. Students are also provided the opportunity to earn while learning, thus enabling them to remain in school through graduation or continue their education at the college level. Coop- erative Office Education is based on the principle that on-the-job training, with competent supervision, provides the best learning experience for the student. Future Business Leaders Future Business Leaders of America (FBLA) is an organization for any student enrolled in business and office courses at PHS. Its members learn to hold office and direct the affairs of the club, to work with representatives of other organizations, and to compete at regional, state, and na- tional events involving business skills and knowledge. FBLA activities include service projects such as canned food drives and visits to hospitalized children and elderly people. FBLA also sponsors many promotional activities such as receptions for the voca- tional advisory council, school board members, and vocational teachers. FBLA members enjoy many social activities such as the annual trip to the March of Dimes Mansion of Terro, participation in the homecoming parade, as well as pizza and skating parties. The FBLA officers for 1981-88 are: Presi- dent — Angela Holloway, Vice President — Cindy Roberts, Secretary — Lisa Kurtz, Treasurer — Dana Ferguson, and Report- er Historian — Terri Floren. i | Att i My RS ee a aa HH int schon neh NRE A IR ‘Cx. ee ‘ill Wie 128 Junior Class Officers: Eddie Morrison, Denise Holloway, | na Rains, Danette Holloway. al Mary Lynn Allen Kip Atkins !
