awa a | rs YN Py i 5) te Me it % tbe K - ISLANDER 81 WOHN BYARD ‘4 rr 1 ERT ng wala SMa Fe ; y THE LAND ANNUAL ROOTCELLAR In the 5 years since the opening of the school, Poquoson has known both triumph and tragedy, stability and controversy, victory and defeat. Through good times we have discovered our potential; through bad, strength and togetherness. Throughout all elements of adversity we have emerged victors, whether in games of football, soccer, basketball, tennis, and track, or in the 5 years of learning at 51 Odd Road. In 5 years we've seen faces old and new; student, faculty, and administration; boy and girl; man and woman. Yet, even when these faces are gone, the invulnerable spirit t that makes P.H.S. what it is shall remain. V times four we know, is the term served by the one we all love so. She works in the office and we treasurer her ‘cause she knows us by name, it doesnt take a book to keep her but that’s our aim. V is for five years at 51 Odd Road, the school with a new ball diamond and lawns freshly mowed. 1981 is the year we remember so well with each photo we see and old story we tell. Teachers did come and some did go . . . but each is remembered by the seeds he did sow. Vi is for doctor, although this does not seem to be but ina few lines you'll believe me. His voice booms over the loudspeaker as the principal of our school, He’s the ad- ‘ministrator with braces and a style so cool. Poquoson School in 1914 25 YEARS OF SERVICE The Annual Staff of 81 dedicates this edition of the yearbook to Mr. Olen Smith Evans, Sr., Assistant Principal and a favorite at PHS. Mr. Evans dedicates much of his time to the students and school as Assistant Principal and head football coach. Many of the stu- dents have grown to love and respect him greatly. Mr. Evans has been in the Poquoson School System as a faculty member for over 25 years. Mr. Evans lives in Hampton with his wife Emily and his son, Olen Jr., and daughter Teresa. _ Ss ? és « OLEN EVANS, SR. i 4 , a ered ieee oo an CATE aw ed de beast Oem “ek nano. ¥ ag ee OB |, ate oe Oe road Oo od t apa ah agen ot © cae ee AO” ' vee uNeeon! é B ey éiiwee IR 2 ort sake ae ee REMEMBER THE DAYS OF THE OLD SCHOOLYARD, i S ] x a = = S = a) Sa wn Sa = OH DON’T YOU REMEMBER THE DAYS ... Posters such as this might have been distributed through out the school had it not been for two of Dr. V’s basic weaknesses: paperwork and organization. After all, why write it if you can say it and say it and say it. Who will ever forget the many ‘‘State of the Student’ addresses that often interrupted the less than exciting lectures. Although the “State of the Students’ were at times less than perfect, Dr. V. always stressed his confidence and his trust in both students and faculty. To quote Dr. V.: “IT can live with that.” 68 1p — Discipline, Instruction Leadership — L BeKUARY 198] Mr. Olen Evans Sr. — Assistant Principal and Head Football Coach | With the entrance of Mr. Hinds came a new system of organization. He will be remem- bered for bringing method to the madness. Whereas everyone else simply stores sup- plies he methodically files them under tack, thumb; clip, paper; band, rubber;. His stern expression is often undermined by his taste in neckties; one causes a “high level of con- cern’, the other causes a ‘“‘low level of humor”. We’re looking forward to many more years with you, Mr. Hinds because “You've got class” “or is that “Have you got a class.” Mr. David Edward Hinds — Assistant Principal for Instruction 69 Miss Cora Everhart By 7:15 in the morning, a bright and patient smile is ready to meet the faculty and students. Whereas, her job requires seclusion and con- centration, her personality encourages conversation and advice. After 21 years of service, she can remember every student who has entered Poquoson High School. Poquoson does not need computerized records, we need “Miss Cora”. Mr. Mrs. Olen Evans, Sr. surpised him with the news of the award during his 18th birthday celbration. Be- cause Olen has been active in football, wrestling, and track during his four years at PHS, the stu- dents and the community believe that the award is well earned and well deserved.
