And People. ae. our) Said, P POQUOSON PUBLIC LIBRARY 500 CITY HALL AVE POQUOSON, VA 23662 IN MEMORIAM CHARLES ANDERSON And a youth said, Speak to us of Friendship And he answered, saying: Your friend is your needs answered. He is your field which you sow with love and reap with thanksgiving. And he is your board and your fireside. For you come to him with your hunger and you seek him for peace. . When you part from your friend, you grieve not; For that which you love most in him may be clearer in his absence, as the mountain to the climber is clearer from the plain. Kahil Gibran The Prophet ae yer “Pooh On The Tigers, Lets Winnie’ was the theme for the second place winners. Cindy Holloway and Wayne Evans walks through the flags. The Color Guard stands at attention while the National An- them plays. During the halftime show, the Pom Pom girls show their style. Parading off the field is the Poquoson High School Band. HOMECOMING QT: Donald Mitchell and Rhonda Wheless parade down the field. With most of Bull Island filling the stands, the football game against Sus- sex Central began. The teams clashed in a competition of strategy and strength. Excitement filled the air; crowds cheered, yelled, and groaned as the foot- ball either crossed the goal line or stop- ped short. Half time entertainment was a panorama of fantasy. Comic Strip Char- acters was the Homecoming theme. Linus, Charlie Brown, Winnie the Pooh The Sophomore Class float, Charlie Brown, captured first place. and Garfield the Cat, all atop class floats, were present to add to the gaiety. The Sophomore Class float captured first place with the Juniors taking sec- ond. Mr. Tim Smith led his award- winning marching band in an enter- taining combination of music and for- mations of flags, pom-poms and marchers. The kaleidoscope of color and movement served as the perfect set- ting for the announce ment of the 1979 Homecoming Queen. Ciny Holloway was crowned as thundersous applause resounded from the grandstands. The whirlwind of the evening con- tinued even as half time ended and Cindy took her place to watch the game’s second half. The Islanders fought courageously in both the third and fourth quarters. The final score, however, fell in favor of the opposition. Homecoming continued on into the weekend with the traditional Home- coming Dance, sponsored by the Na- tional Honor Society. The sounds of disco, rock ’n roll and ballads filled the night air, adding a finishing touch to the magic of Homecoming. “Put Up Your Dukes And Fight” was the theme for the Freshmen float. Karen Brodsky, the Sophomore Represenative and her escort, Charles Fulnecky waits for the final announcement. Giving her best shot for the Homecoming half- time, Donna Silver twirls her baton. 13 = | ty aim sv COB a pea te eke te ea , on eh ae 34 +o a ie ote 4 j ; ate i Bie He wie ! s the pick of the crop ao) c cS D i) he o Kenny Forrest and Donna Silver discuss plans for the dance. Among their accomplishments were sponsoring four of the most popular dances of 1980. These dances were the 50’s Dance, Sadie Hawkins Dance, and their very own Ring Dance. This was due in part to the efforts of Dr. Roy Vorhauer. Princi- pal of P.H.S. for three years, Dr. ’’V” can be found just about any where in the school. It isn’t uncommon to have to search around a while in order to find him as he works with students, parents and faculty in administering the work- ings of the school. He always makes time in his schedule to stop and talk, help with a problem or share a laugh. Working with Dr. Vorhauer were three assistant principals. Mr. Olen Evans is a well known face at P.H.S. He taught P.E. for 12 years before becom- ing an assistant principal. His duties include discipline and he is Athletic Di- rector and Head Football Coach. Too soon to leave us was Mr. Chris Woolley. Mr. Woolley came _ to Poquoson High in 1977 as assistant principal. Among other things he worked tiredlessly on curriculum, teacher evaluations and social pro- gramming. Mr. Woolley left with the well-wishes of all, in Nov., for a new position in New Jersey. Taking Mr. Woolley’s place temporar- ily was Mrs. Marie Dryden. As head of the Guidance Department, Mrs. Dryden easily stepped into her new “‘role’’. She will return to her guidance office at the end of the 1979-80 school year. Her ef- forts and hard work were a great benefit to all. 75 Mrs. Marie Dryden 2) S oO WwW re a O = a CLOAS—-Z-—-WFECLEOLYW FACULTY Mrs. Cathy Acree Resoure Mrs. Connie Basnett Math Telling “4 Asking —? And as tradition dictates, every year we've had a 50’s Day. It is when walking through the halls is like setting foot ona “Happy Days” or “American Grafitti’. The hems are dropped, the socks bob- bied and the hair greased. Ultimately all this, is in preparation for the 50’s Day Dance, when the school “be-bopps” and twists” the night away. This years 50’s dance contest winners were Henry Ayer and Heidi Nill. Second place went to Scott Sullivan and Cindy Holloway. In the dress contest, Sissy Wright and Clint Owens won first place in the first lunch while Sarah Watson and Billy Wescott won in the second lunch.
