FOOTBALL 1978 David Geissinger with punt return against Southampton. If the move from Group A to Group AA was supposed to be tough, the football team gave no indication of it. They finished their season with a 9-1 District record and a first-round Region I Championship. Which gave them a chance to play the “‘legend’’ — South- ampton. The team was led by four Se- nior linemen Co-Captains; Joe Abney, Roy Fox, Guy Garrett, and Randy Brookshire. This years Most Valuable Player Award was given to George Yeager, and the Sprinter Trophy was awarded to Robert Turner for the second year in a row. When asked how they liked being Co-Captains, Roy Fox replied, “‘I felt really honored and was happy to be a part of such a fantastic football team.” Guy Garrett said, “It was enjoyable, we have the best coaches, and the team was great to work with.”” He concluded by saying, “I had a great time.” Wally Cristopher brings down Tabb’s ball carrier.

Any Varsity coach will tell you that you can not have a good Varsity team without a good J.V. team. This years Quarterbacks, David Smith and Jimmy Walker picked up yardage on the ground and in the air with outstanding plays. The Gloucester game seemed to be the turning point in the season for the Is- landers for after this loss, their possibil- ity for the champicnship plays were greatly diminished. There were many close games, which were not decided until the final gun sounded.
