20 The 1978 season proved to be almost perfect for the girls J.V. basketball team. After posting a regular season record of 14 and 4, the team lost to Bru- ton for the J.V. Championship by one point. Coach Harding stated, ‘the girls did an outstanding job for being in exis- tence for only two years. The only thing that prevented a perfect season was lack of experience.” J.V. The hours of practice, the hot baths, the Ben-Gay. The constant rolling of the hills and the swaying of trees in the wind, all are part of the cross country runner. The path taken is laden with mud and sticks and the birds and crickets cheer the runner on as he trudges through the forest and along the dusty roads. His pulse quickens as he begins the final sprint. And then it is over. Totally exhausted, the runner’s legs give way, and for the first time in twenty minutes, he relaxes. 19
