am HISTORY As if in a distance I heard Mr. Thomas call my name. Slowly I got up and received my diploma and his congratulations. I could feel tears trickling down my cheeks as I sat down in my chair. This was what I had worked for five long years. Yet now, they seemed only as minutes flying through the space of time. We, the Senior Class of 1955 after five years of toil have at last achieved our victory. We were so happy and so full of mischief that warm September, 1950, as we entered the eighth grade Unaware were we of the steep ladder we had to climb to reach the top. We were not a very distinguished group of one hundred and fourteen rats hurrying and scurrying to beat the late bell. Alex Gili- kin was elected leader for that year. Zoan Firth was chosen as representative in the May Court. At the end of the year we were preparing our schedules and meditating upon our vocations. September, 1951 met us on our way to Poquoson as freshmen. We elected Ashley Page as our leader for the year. We were just getting used to the basic fundamentals of Algebra, Sci- ence, and Language. Barbara Menetch and Sylvia Ward represented our class in the May Court. We entered in September, 1952 with a brighter outlook than ever before. Francis Evans was chosen leader for this year. Beverly Watkins and Doris Taylor represented our class in the May Court. We gave our first big dance since entering high school, Valentine Dance. September, 1953 came, and we entered as Juniors. We received our Senior rings and we walked around with our hands high in the air for inspection. The Junior Play Winning Schemers was a success. Everyone thoroughly enjoyed Alex Gilikin dressing like a girl. Alex Gilikin was again elected our leader for that year. Patricia Butcher and Barbara Gilruth represented our class in the May Court. Then May rolled around and our big dance came, Junior-Senior Prom. The Scenery was very original. Under the supervision of Mr. Mrs. Collins the class created a patio with stars, shrubs and garden in the gym. Our theme was Stairway to the Stars . On September 9, 1954, we entered the last step of our career as students at Poquoson. We were Seniors, the highest class in school. June Wallace was elected as our class leader. We had lost thirty- one members of our class as Poquoson became incorporated. It was a sad occasion to see our classmates leave the last year. Howard Wainwright was elected editor-in-chief of the annual under the sponsorship of Mrs. Lewis. He was also elected president of the S. C. A. Our Safety Patrol consisted of twenty-six members, with Judy Bunting and Beverly Watkins serving as captains. The Juniors gave us the Prom this year. Grandpa ' s Christmas Spree” under the direction of Mrs. Freeman and Mrs. Collins was a success. Everyone thoroughly enjoyed the stuffed Santa especially when he came alive. Out invitations and pins were received. Then the days of practice for graduation arrived. Caps and gowns were handed out by Mrs. Freeman and Mrs. Collins our class sponsors. Out Senior Play proved to be one of the best ever given. Slowly I opened my eyes. My classmates were rising. I got to my feet and to the strains of music walked off the stage and out of the doors of my Alma Mater, Poquoson High School. Reading, writing, and arithmetic sessions ate over, but beyond the horizon lies an even greater work, that of life. Although we are glad to receive our diplomas and take our part in the game of life, we feel a deep regret in leaving old Poquoson High School; but we will always remember that our happiest days were spent here.
