'53 FOOTBALL ROUNDUP Despite pre-season predictions, avery successful season was enioyed by the Bull lSlGnd football team. The lslanders compiled a conference record of 2 wins, l loss, and 2 ties. ln non-conference games the lslanders did even better as they piled up3 wins against no defeats. POOUOSON-26 CREEDS-14 ln the opening game of the season, the Poquoson High Eleven emerged victorous as it downed Creeds, 26-l4. The lslanders opened the scoring on the third play of the game when fullback Keith Goodson went over from 25 yards out. The Creeds team fought back valiantly and went ahead for the only time of the game with 4 minutes left in the lst. period. With both Goodson and McDaniels tallying in the second period, the Bulls went ahead foiykeepsp though the Creeds eleven did threaten in the third period when it scored its second tally. ln the fourth stanza, Goodson scored for the third time of the night. Unable to get its offense to click con- sistantly, and with a faulty pass-defense, the ls- landers were completely at the mercy of the Gov- ernors . Poquoson-I3 Varina-6 Playing away from home for the second straight week, and hampered by mud consistantlyp the Bulls streaked through the Varina game for their second win of the season. Goodson got his sixth tally of the year and Guy Garrett contribut- ed a touchdown to pace their mates to me victory. Kincaid's first try at the extra point was goody the second slithering off in the mud. Though the lslanders went ahead in the first period, 7-O, the Blue Devils came back strong and came within I point to cut the lead. Garrett's touchdown put the lslanders ahead for keeps as the half came to a close. There was noscoring in the second halfthough both teams did threaten a number of times. Poquoson-T2 Deep Creek-I2 The Bull lslanders tied a highly favored Deep Creek Hornet team T2-I2 on the l7on the Craddock Stadium field , Though they had to come from behind to score their first touchdown, the ls- landers played an excel lent game . Goodson scored the first touch- down in the second period to even the score up at 6-6. The third period went by with no score on the part of either team, though both threateneda number of times. Late in the third period D. Freeman intercepted a Hornet pass and returned it to the 4 to set up the second lslander touchdown. Just after the fourth period opened, McDaniels broke through the center of the Hornet forward wall to score. The try for the extra point was blocked. With less than two minutes to go in the fourth quarter, the Hornets took to the air and connected on a pass that carried 75 yards to the 5 yd. line. On the next play Adult scored to tie the ball game up. With less than a minute to go, Adult attempted to run the ball over for the extra point but was stopped short.
