Sllllll Pllllllll The Safety Patrol has been very successful this year under the guidance of Mr. Philip Edwards, Sponsor, Cartherine Ciillikin, Captain, and Mary Nel- son, Lieutenant With the cooperation of the students, good will has been promoted between the teacher and the student, The Patrol has policed at football games, baseball games, and May Day. but their main duties are on the busses and campus every day, IO POQUOSON HIGH SCHOOL I S IIIRS ANN CLUVERIUS Pres d nt BOBBY FORREST Vuce Presud nt 'i'4Q-...,, NANCY DE NEUFVILLE Secretary Treasurer CIASS HISIIIHI As uf from a dream I heard Mr Thomas call my name Slowly I got up and receuved my duploma and nus congratulatrons I could feel tears trucklung down my cheeks as I sat down un my chaur Thus was what I had worked for fuve long years Yet now they seemed only as munutes flyrng through the space of tume Why when I close my eyes I can even see those fuve years We were so happy on that brught sunny mornung September 6 l945 as we walked unto the halls of Poquoson Hugh School We looked very dustun guushed wuth Iupstsck on our faces scurryung thus way and that lost un the masses of students Joe Buntung was elected as our leader for that year Oh' We really had fun on that weuner roast even thougw the weuners had been for gotten Everyone was so proud of our Freshmen Chorus when they made such a wonderful ratung at the Musuc Festuval September I946 agaun met us on our way to Poquoson as Freshmen We elected Catherune Cullukun as our leader for thus year Funally we had learned our way around school and were really tryung to take advantage of ut Our Freshmen Dance was one of the spotlughts of the year The furst May Day sunce l94I was held Catherune Cullukun and Nancy de Neufvulle represented our class un the court We entered rn September I947 wuth a brughter look than ever before We were funally Sophomores To add to that great feelung we learned that we C-ullukun was agaun elected Presudent of our class We ordered our class rungs and thought we were as good as graduated After weeks of workung our Chrustmas Danc was sponsored and ended up to be a wonderful success Evangelune Fox Jeannune Ward and Aulsa Braud represented us un the May Court Then came that nught of Aprul 23 when we sponsored the bug Junuor Senuor Prom for the outgoung Senuors Everythung was sumply beautuful and the band was so dreamy Everyone hated to go home We entered our Junuor year un September I9-48 Our Senuor rungs came and we walked around holdung our hands out for unspectuon John Patterson was elected to head our class and Joe Buntung headed our Student Government Thurty fuve of us became Safety Patrol members wuth Bobby Forrest as Cap taun Catherune Cullukun was elected May Queen wuth Jeannune Ward and Roselyn Pauls as Mauds of Honor Clorua Craham Aulsa Braud Nancy de Neuf vulle and Sue Holloway were class repre entatuves un the Court Our Sprung Dance was the largest dance un the hustory of our class The Junuor play Aunt Tullue Coes to Town proved to be a great success On September 9 I949 we entered the last rounds of our career as stu dents at Poquoson We were Senuors the hughest class un school Ann Cluveruus was elected as our class leader Our Safety Patrol consusted of thurty sux mem bers wuth Catherune Cuullukun as captaun Otus Buntung was elected edutor un chuef of the Annual under the sponsorshup of Muss Moore and Mr Baker The Talent Show was a howlung success especually wuth those black faced Senuor gurls un short skurts The Junuo s gave us the Prom thus year Our Senuor play proved to be one of the best ever guven The Band got new unuforms and were the sharpest ever seen Our unvutatuons and puns were receuved When our Annual arruved everyone had wruter s cramp Then the days of practuce for graduatuon Caps and gowns were handed out by Mrs Freeman and Mrs Rob unson our class sponsors Fufty sux of us recesved duplomas Slowly I opened my eyes My classmates were rusung I got to my feet and to the strauns of musuc walked off the stage and out of the doors of my Alma Mater Poquoson Hugh School Readung wrutung and aruthmetuc sessuons are over but beyond the blue lues an even greater work that of lufe I2 7 . . . . Neither team could get its offense clicking in the first quarterg then early in the second quarter Poquoson exploded. Bull lsland tailback Henen Benthall hit end Arlen Carter with a touchdown pass in a play that covered SO yards. Benthall's conversion try was low, but Poquoson led 6-O. However, this lead was short-lived, for only a moment later Jack Brown of Franklin intercepted one of Benthall's passes on the 'lslander's' 20 yard line and scampered across the goal line for the TD that tied the score. Franklin tried to run over the extra point, but was repulsed by Poquoson's strong line. Several times, later in the game, the big green of Franklin marched to within scoringdistance of the Poquoson goal line only to lose the ball on downs. POQUOSON-7, GREAT BRIDGE-6 On the Great Bridge Wildcats' home gridiron Arlen Pills Carter and Henan Benthall were the deciding factors in a dingdong slugfest that saw Poquoson emerge victorious by a single point. Midway in the first period Benthall, aided by beautiful blocking, returned a Great Bridge punt 88 yards for Poquoson's only touchdown. Less than a minute later Carter snagged Benthall's pass in the end zone to score the point that won the ball game. lt was still, however, early in the game and the Wildcats were not through. They scored before the end of the half and were always threatening. Many times Great Bridge drove deep into Poquoson territory to be stopped within spitting distance of the goal line. Center Alex Turlington and guards Philip Edwards and Dickie Warnick were outstanding in a Poquoson forward wall that made several brilliant goal line stands. POQUOSON-l3, MATHEW WHALEY-7 In their first performance on their home gridiron, Poquoson Hi's red-hot football team upset the Mathew Whaley Governors, l3-7, The first quarter went by scoreless. Then tiring of the Alphonse and Gaston act being put on at mid-field by the Whaleyites and themselves, the Islanders decided to move the ball. Teeny Soles, Olen Evans and Henen Benthall took turns biting off yardage down to the four yard stripe from where Benthall knifed off tackle for the score. Benthall then threw a pass to lanky Pills Carter for the extra point. After the Governors had knotted the count at seven all in the third ses- sion, Poquoson went to work again, End David Amory pulled in one of Bent- hall's tosses on the Whaley 45 and kept going for another 20 yards to set up the winning touchdown. After the Poquoson backs had worked the ball down to the one yard stripe Billy Hogge bucked over for the game winning tally. POQUOSON-33, KEMPSVILLE-6 Kempsville started out fast with a touchdown in the first few minutes of play in the fourth game of the season, but the Islanders soon slowed them down to a bare crawl. After the Blue Devils scored early in the first stanza, end Archie Healy took the ensuing kickoff and romped 69 yards to pay dirt. Poquoson backs, l-lenen Benthall, Boyd Soles, John Patterson, and Olen Evans then proceded to bury the outclassed Blue Devils under an avalanche of touch- downs. To complete the rout Poquoson made good on three passes for extra points-two to end Pills Carter and one to Healy. POQUOSON-24, DEEP CREEK-O Billy Hogge with one touchdown and Henen Benthall with three helped take the sting out of Deep Creeks hapless Hornets as Poquoson Hi won its fourth game of the football season, The Islanders scored fast with Benthall breaking loose from 33 yards out and going all the way. After that Poquoson was never in trouble. Poquoson's tough defense restrained the Hornets' at- tempt to get their attack goingg while the smooth Bull Island backfield bit off huge chunks of yardage, Benthall did the honors twice more in the first half- once from the 26 and again from the 46. To add insult to injury, late in the contest, Hogge completely fooled the Deep Creek defense and raced 44 yards on the ancient Statue of Liberty play for the final six points. Although he didn't break into the scoring column fullback Boyd Teeny Soles started by racking up a 9.9 yard average in 9 carries. 60 POQUOSON-0, SMITHFIELD-0 ln a night battle before some 2,000 spectators at Darling Memorial Sta- dium, Poquoson's fast freight football team got derailed by Smithfields alert Packers. Fumbles, penalties, and miscues of every sort cost both teams dearly. The closest the Poquonsonites were to pay dirt all night was in the third quar- ter when they had a first down on the Packer one yard marker. However, they lost their opportunity by fumbling and never got going after that. Smithfield never threatened seriously, but they had an extremely alert defense, It often appeared that the Packers knew the Poquoson plays better than Poquoson did. The affair proved, though, that Poquosonites could draw a fair sized crowd: this despite a threatening sky. Throughout the entire contest the Bull Island High School fans displayed admirable school spirit. POQUOSON-44, VARINA-0 ln their last performance before the home crowd for i949 the Poquoson football squad completely devastated Varina 44-0. Henen Benthall started the slaughter on a I4 yard scoring thrust in the second period. ln the same perid Benthall passed to Archie Healy in the end zone for another six-pointer. Hardly had the spectators seated themselves at the start of the second half when Boyd Teeny Soles brought them to their feet again with a sparkling 73 yard kickoff return for another TD. Benthall passed complete to Arlen Carter on the conversion try, Before the third quarter was over Benthall scooted l4 yards around end to score standing up. But the fun had only begun. At the start of the fourth period Benthall snagged an errant Varina pass on his own 30 and on the next play ripped off tackle from 70 yards out and went all the way. Healy, not to be outdone, grabbed a Varina lateral and weaved his way 40 yards untouched. The whole thing began to look more and more like a good old Roman Holiday as wingback Olen Evans whirled 33 yards for the final touchdown. However, to make the affair more gruesome, quarterback John Patterson dropped a pass into the waiting hands of sub-tailback George Dumas for the extra point. POQUOSON-33, MATHEWS-6 Even the subs got into the act as Poquoson put the finishing touches to an undefeated season with a 33-0 conquest of Mathews. Triple-threat Henen Benthall scored once each in the first, second and fourth stanzas. In addi- tion, fullback Boyd Soles bucked over for a touchdown and try for point. Late in the last quarter sub-back Merrill Barton made up for a touchdown Mathews squeezed out by catching a pass thrown by another sub, Johnny Hunt, in the end zone. Reading left to The team lost a dual meet to Highland Springs to open the season but despite a lack of experience, made an admirable showing in the District Meet. Two Poquoson harriers qualified for the State Meet and earned eight points, putting them in fifth place. Most of the time, the team played good ball but at times they were lacking what it takes to win. Any losses, however, were not due to laxness on the part of the players or inefficient coaching. The boys who stayed all through the campaign really hustled for their well- liked coach, Red Simpson.
