POQUOSON, VA 23662 til POQUOSON HIGH SCHOOL fOflPJJJOWJ This annual belongs to you, the boys and girls who compiled it. The pictures in it are those you may show your children and grandchildren in the future. You will probably laugh along with them at the funny clothes and shoes and hairstyles you and your friends wore. Even though you may laugh, you will think of the fun and freedom that was yours in those days. The pictures of your school chums and teachers will prob- ably make a tear fall from your eyes as you turn through the pages, wishing that you could relive those happy days. TWO DEDICATION We, the Senior class, dedicate this, the XII volume of the York Chronicle to our leader through four years of high school life, Mr. Norris L. Thomas. We leave this small t oken in dedication to all the things for which he stands: his undying and all important leadership, his good will and understand- ing, and above all his ability and willingness to give us any advice we needed. We are proud that we have the privilege of pay- ing tribute to this man who has led and will con- tinue to lead us and our fellow students of Poquoson High School. THREE jfl iimam] In order to commemorate our fellow students who have left their homes and taken up arms that democracy might live, we, the students and faculty of Poquoson High School, leave this, the 1946 edition of the York Chronicle, as a small monument to their heroic sacrifice. We are deeply indebted to the courageous and relentless spirit which these boys and girls, who graduated from Poquoson High School, have shown in their efforts to preserve the peace that we have today. They have proved again that the youth of this nation is willing to fight and die to protect our fundamental principles β Liberty and Justice for all. With the guidance of Mrs. Robinson, our sponsor, and under the leadership of Edison Gillikin, Captain, and Mary Pearle Joyner, lieutenant, the record book of 1 945-46 is closed with a sense of relief and duty well-done. LAST WILL AND TESTAMENT Since we, the Senior Class of 1946, find it necessary to part from our dear old Alma Mater, we have drawn up this, our last will and testament, hereby re- voking all former wills made by us at any time. To Mr. Thomas, our principal, we leave our deepest appreciation for the patience and guidance he has shown us. To Miss Bradshaw, our sponsor, we leave our sincere thanks for her interest and cooperation in making this edition of the York Chronicle possible. To Mrs. Bradley, our home-room teach- er, we leave our appreciation for her help in our undertakings. To the other members of the faculty, we leave our gratitude for their interest in our endeavors. Cecil C. Moore bequeaths his position as president of the Senior Class to any- one the class of ' 47 elects. Cornell Burcher leaves his musical tal- ent to be equally divided among Harriet Page, James and Joseph Bradshaw. Mary Alline Firth and Ellamae Hollo- way leave their giggle to Geneva Mc- Pherson, Louise Wilson, and Henry C. Page. Hunter Riggins leaves his wave in (Continued on page 59) Class of β46 TWENTY-NINE FIRST ROW: Prof. Frazier (Hunter Riggins), Co-Director (Miss Bradshaw), Catherine (Mildred Lee Evans), Harriet (Lena Lee Riggins), Droopy (Cornell Burcher), Louise (Ida Rose Topping), Jimmy (Edison Gillikin). SECOND ROW: Florence (Carrie White Moore), Doris (Ruth Smith), Miss Watkins (Esther Marie White), Co-Director (Miss Forrest). MISS JIMMY Since everyone enjoys a lively farce, full of amusing situations and clever wise cracks, the Senior Class selected Miss Jimmy which deals with the laugh-provoking adventure of Jimmy, college youth, who enters the dormitory of an exclusive girls school in search of a dress as required by a fraternity initiation. Louise (Ida Rose Topping) is a pleasant, and sincere Sophomore at Briar Mountain College. It is spring and her thoughts turn to romance. Florence (Carrie White Moore) her roommate, is not so romantically inclined and tries to appear hard-boiled by making wise cracks. Catherine (Mildred Lee Evans) who lives down the hallway, is a blond of the type that men are said to pre- fer and definitely prefers men. Doris (Ruth Smith) who rooms with her, is the Freshman drudge. Ffarriet (Lena Lee Riggins) the campus snob with an inferiority complex, is a dark-haired siren. In contrast with college girls is the part of Miss Watkins (Esther Marie White) an old spinster, who heads the school Jimmy (Edison Cillikin) is the typical college boy, a little serious but still gay and subject to romance in the spring. Droopy (Cornell Burcher) the colored janitor, is exactly that! Professor Frazier (Hunter Riggins, Jr.) went to Oxford and came back with a taste for tea and an English accent. THIRTY CLASS PROPHECY In 1946 Edison Gillikin ' s work as editor of the Poquoson High School Annual was per- formed with such efficiency that it became evident he would make journalism his life ' s work. The years passed swiftly; it seemed impossible that it could be 1957 β ten years since gradua- tion from high school. As Edison sat at his desk after the completion of an important assignment, he mused β what, he wonders has become of his classmates at P. H. S.? An idea for investigation! He employed detective Vernon Moore to find out about each of the crowd of 1946. Cornell Burcher is Clerk of Court of York County and Emma Freeman is the County Health Nurse. Hunter Riggins, Jr., is the surgeon in one of Chicago ' s largest hospitals, with Grace Thomas and June Elkins as his assistants. James Phillips has replaced Mr. Thomas, retired principal, of Poquoson High School where Annette Lawson is teaching History. Mary Pearle Joyner is president of a secretarial college in Norfolk. Nellie Gray Forrest and Carrie White Moore are starring in the opera Carmen at the Metropolitan Opera House. Harry Bradshaw is coaching football at Notre Dame. Esther Marie White and Ellamae Holloway are private stenographers for Jack Cain and Jerry Bunting, Attorneys-At-Law. In a studio in Hollywood, Robert Errol Hogge is acting as leading photographer for Carol Byrum, the producer of the film, School Days. Virginia Pascall and Mercer Hogge are playing the leading roles. Ida Rose Topping is a prominent newspaper reporter for the New York Times. Anna Sue Forrest is a physical education instructor at Madison College. Lena Lee Riggins is owner of the Broadway Department Store in New York in which Jeanette Hansford and Gertrude Foster are designing. Frank Sinatra has left all of his swooning public to Howell Robertson, Jr., Ace Crooner. Mildred Lee Evans is in Canada being crowned Queen of the Ice Follies. Elmer Lee Goodson, Bell Boy, and Mary Alline Firth, registrar, are working in the famous Waldorf-Astoria Hotel. Jack Evans and Ashley Moore, two radio comedians, are broadcasting over WGH. Ruth Teague and Rosie Mae Wilson are in Florida entertaining in their beautiful homes which the famous architect, Cecil Moore, built. Kathleen Moore and Mary Basta are supervisors of on orphanage in Richmond. Beulah Mae Moore and Betsy Turlington are modeling the clothes designed by Ruth Smith on Fifth Avenue. Betty Lou Siebert is the proprietor of a pocketbook shop in Chicago. Vernon ' s report on the class of 1946 did not surprise Edison; he might have imagined what was taking place. He realized he had requested this investigation to satisfy his own curiosity. After reading his report, Vernon stood before the publisher smiling. Ting-A-Ling β TING-A-LING sounded the alarm clock and Edison Gillikin, the author, awoke. Had this been a dream? It had! βJOYCE ANN WARD THIRTY-ONE Quietest: Jack Cain, Kathleen Moore; Prettiest, Most Handsome: Ida Rose Topping, Vernon T. YORK CHRONICLE Again this year the York Chronicle publication was made possible by the advertisements of our backers. The annual staff has tried to produce a book that will live up to the standards of the 1946 graduating class of Poquoson High School. We have, with the able sponsorship of Miss Norma Keith Bradshaw, the efforts of the entire staff, and the support of the student body as a whole, tried to make this annual something that will live in the memory of all those who have made this small token of the senior class possible. With this accomplished, the staff is proud of its opportunity to leave this annual to the seniors of future years. As we entered, we were met by a sea of white robes and shining faces; yes, the Glee Club was presenting its annual Father ' s Night Christmas Program. It is strange how deeply human voices can thrill the soul of man. It is as though we picture the Nativity through hearing the words sung by young voices. The Glee Club carried on many successful activities throughout the year. The calendar for the year in- cluded: a Christmas party, Father ' s Night program, music festival, spring concert, and music for the commence- ment exercises. HOME ECONOMICS CLUB The Home Economics Club was organized for the purpose of preserving the ideals of home life; of encouraging a well-balanced program of living; and of developing an understanding of the field of home economics. Meet- ings were planned concerning themes of sewing problems. Our most elaborate entertainment was a Christmas party. Such fun we had hearing boogie woogie and, in general, getting in the Yuletide spirit. Recently we have become members of the Future Homemakers ' Club of Virginia; consequently, we plan to at- tend the club ' s camp this summer. GIRL ' S BASKETBALL This year the girl ' s basketball team of Poquoson High set a record unparalleled in the school ' s history. Ably coached by Archie Topping, known to the girls as Duckβ, the team ended the season undefeated. Many games, such as the ones with St. Vincent and Hampton, were difficult, but playing with skill and determination, the girls came through with flying colors. The forwards worked their plays in a brilliant manner, and usually made good their shots. The guards held down the opposing teams so well that in two games the opponents made no goals from the field. As a unit the girls made a name for themselves that will long be remembered by Poquoson and the schools that they played.
