THE BLUFF ’83 Poplar Bluff Senior High Poplar Bluff, Missouri Volume 64 am 2 Highlights Sports. .. Activities. Classes.. Ads........ . 10 .32 .58 .90 168 Table of Contents 3 When time, which steals our tears away, Shall steal our pleasures too; The memory of the past will stay And half our joys renew. 5 Happiness Happiness is like a crystal, Fair and exquisite and clear, Broken in a million pieces, Shattered, scattered far and near. Now and then along life’s pathway, Lo! Some shining fragments fall; But there are so many pieces No one ever finds them ail. You may find a bit of beauty, Or an honest share of wealth, While another just beside you Gathers honor, love or health. Vain to choose or grasp unduly, Broken is the perfect ball; And there are so many pieces No one ever finds them all. Yet the wise as on they journey Treasure every fragment clear, Fit them as they may together, Imaging the shattered sphere, Learning ever to be thankful, Though their share of it is small; For it has so many pieces No one ever finds them ail. — Priscilla Leonard The Flight of Youth There are gains for all our losses. There are balms for ail our pain: But when youth, the dream departs it takes something from our hearts, And it never comes again. We are stronger, and are better, Under manhood’s sterner reign: Still we feel that something sweet Followed youth, with flying feet, And will never come again. Something beautiful is vanished, And we sigh for it in vain; We behold it everywhere, On the earth, and in the air, But it never comes again! Despite awesome strength in the distance events, which could include a complete sweep in the 2-mile relay, mile and two mile, the Mules will find it difficult to score enough points to win any major meets this year. “Our track program’s success this year will depend greatly on how well some of our young kids progress. We have very little talent in field events and sprints, these events could be hard to score in,” states Mules head coach Bill Caputo. With seniors Dennis Baggett, Todd Cook, Arthur Waddle, and junior Kevin Ellis, the 2 mile relay should be broken. Senior Mike Johnson has proven to be a pointer in the hurdle events, he should get help from sophomore Terry Greer. Waddle who finished sixth in the state meet in the 3200 meter last year and placed second in the state cross country meet, should be one of the state’s premiere runners in the mile and two mile this year. Arthur has a very good chance of winning both the mile and two mile events at the state meet this year. Coach Bill Arment Coach Barry Cody Coach Bill Caputo Coach George Short Kevin Wilkerson starts his bid for the home stretch. Kevin Ellis receives baton to anchor mile relay. Dennis Baggett closes in on Central runner. Tim Albers displays ballet and coordination in discus. The 1983 Girls track team will be loaded with Juniors and Sophomores. Most areas on the track should be relatively strong. The Sprint Events will be held down by Sr. Mary Hopson, Jr. Tami Williams and Sophs. Jamie King, Karen Laatsch and Lisa Hawes. Distance Events Jrs. Beth Rowland, Rhonda Adams, Mary Clark, Soph. Terry Sheridan, Debbie Zadnick. And a lot of freshmen. The Girls will not have the depth in field events this year as we have in the past, however Soph. Becky Hansmann should place well in the High Jump, Long Jump, and Triple Jump. Jr. Tracey Schremp will point in the shot and discuss. The Girls have won 5 slight conference titles and will be shooting for number six this year. Last year they finished a disappointing 3rd in the district after two consecutive district championships, many of the girls feel this year could be another district championship team. 56 Mary Clark shows good form while running 800 meters. The Boys and Girls track teams express their appreciation for the voluntary help to run off the track meet. Mary Clark running her leg of the 2-mile relay. U i Sherry Arant in the lead for the 2-mile relay. Lisa Hawes pulling for first in the 200 meters. Tracey Schremp shows good form after throwing the shot. Rhonda Adams places well in the long jump.
