Such are the members of our school board. These individuals insure high physical and educational stand- ards for the Poplar Bluff School System. As students, we know that under the leadership of these people we shall secure everything necessary in attaining an education. Thadis R. Seifert, Vice-Pres. Dr. Fred J. Biggs, President J. B. Jeffress Harold Lacy Ray Penney, Sec. Earl Parkin 14 The Missouri State Teachers Associa- tion in its 1964 Convention in Kansas City adopted the following resolution: Democracy is dependent upon an educa- ted citizenry; that the public schools con- tribute significantly to national unity, common purpose, and equality of oppor- tunity among our people and that educa- tion is the greatest constructive force at the disposal of democratic people for the solution of their problems. This statement has always been true and will continue to be more so as the com- plex society in which we live becomes more complex. The educational progress that we have made in the Poplar Bluff Schools in the last few years has been significant but we must not rest and be satisfied. We must continue the progress of our schools, both in physical plant and academic of- ferings, to meet the needs of the future boys and girls of this community. Superintendent of Schools I am sure that all the students of Senior High have given much thought to what the future might hold for them. I challenge you to think through this thought that James Allen has left with us. Whatever your present environment may be. you will fall, remain, or rise with your thoughts, your visions, your ideals. You will become as small as your controlling desire, as great as your dominant aspiration 15 Assistant Superintendent The men of Israel dug their wells deep to reach the waters so necessary for physi- cal life. We too must dig deep into our spiritual thinking and our philosophy of life today if we are to compete in fulfilling our mission in this ever changing world of ours. Hold fast to the good and enduring things in life: love, kindness, honesty, de- cency, responsibility, and understanding the other person's position and his right to believe. Hitch your wagon to a star, but don't get stuck in the mire of human wasteful- ness and deceit. You are a wonderful group of young people. It has been a pleasure to share life's experiences with you. Principal The United States of America is the richest na- tion ever to exist. It seems almost paradoxical that twenty per cent of our nation lives in poverty, and yet we could be on the verge of a new Golden Age! The challenge to Americans is an educational one. We do not lack jobs, but we lack the tools and skills to acquire employment. Contemporary students must furnish the initia- tive, desire, and courage to provide themselves with the skills of education which will be compati- ble with their future employment and careers. You as students pass through these portals but once! Take full advantage of all the possibilities that your community and state offers to yqu. As the years pass we may forget how precious these moments were, but through The Bluff’65 we can remember all the joys, forever. These years have been growing years. We have broadened our outlook on the world around . us through participation in activities, enthusiastic studying, and loyalty to our school. Memories are friendships, learning, progress, fun— memories are what we have when days are gone and only a future awaits us. May you always have your special MOMENTS TO REMEMBER. 34 SS 6 •jSur a • y, r y t t l xlm i (llwnJwilm January 22, 1965 Miss Mary Lynn McPhcoters Editor, THE BLUFF Poplar Bluff Public Schools Poplar Bluff, Missouri 63901 Dear Mary Lynn: Thank you so much for the lovely photographs of your Bluff Queen contestants. It is always difficult to choose one pretty girl above another...and, in this case, each girl was particularly attractive. However, after much delightful indecision, I made the appropriate choices, and marked the photos accordingly. My congratulations to all who participated, and my thanks, again, for asking me to play a part in your school activities. Charleston .... Malden .... 0. 7l 6 14 Chaffee . . . 0 The Mules opened the season with a win over the Caruthersville Tigers 13-7. The Mules touchdown was set up after Eddie Patterson recovered a fum- ble. John Eastburn ran through from the two for the score. Bill Wilks recov- ered a fumble to set up the Tiger tally. Tiger quarterback, Jim Jordan, plung- ed over from the three to score. The Mules scored again in the fourth period when Eastburn tallied from the one. The Mules played Kennett to a 7-7 draw in the second game. The only points that the Mules could manage during the entire game came right after the opening kickoff. Eastburn plunged over from the one foot line for the Mules. Kennett scored when Lonnie Jones took the ball on a reverse and ran eleven yards to paydirt. From that point on the Mules could not get their offense going so for the rest of the game they had to play good defense to keep Kennett from scoring. Perryville sent the Mules on a three game losing streak by defeating them 27-13. Roy Hartle scored Perryville’s first touchdown on a 13 yard run. It wasn’t long before Perryville had an- other touchdown with Hartle running it across from the three. Shortly after that Perryville’s John Trapp scored from the five. With only 30 seconds left in the half, the Mules finally scored with Eastburn hitting Charles Hamp- ton with a 58 yard scoring pass. Right after half-time Richard Lay scored for the Mules on a 78 yard run. In the last period, Hartle scored his third TD of the night from the 10. The game then ended with the Pirates on top 27-13. 68 The Mules received their second loss from Jackson by a score of 13-7. Jack- son scored first when Ron Seabaugh ran across the goal line from the three. The Mules rose up in the second period to move the ball well and scored with Richard Lay taking a 23 yard pass from Bruce Nall. Then Jackson’s Seabaugh scored again. The Mules made a bid late in the game, but they were stopped short of the goal line and had to take their second straight loss. Sikeston handed the Mules a heart- breaking setback 19-14. It appeared that the Mules had the game in the bag, but Sikeston scored a last minute touch- down to win. The first TD of the night came when Sikeston’s John Neal crash- ed into the end zone from the eight. After the half, the Mules started a 51 yard drive climaxed by Charles Ham- ber’s 4 yard TD run. Early in the fourth quarter Richard Lay shook off tacklers and ran 62 yards for the TD that put the Mules ahead. Shortly after that, Sikeston’s Pete Burns plunged one foot for a TD. The Mules still led, but Sikes- ton wouldn’t be beaten, and David Col- lier ran 25 yards to beat the Mules. Poplar Bluff finally ended their los- ing streak by defeating the Cape Cen- tral Tigers 14-0. After the Mules had missed on two scoring opportunities in the first half, they finally scored with Danny Stout taki ng a 12 yard pass from Bruce Nall. The Mules then threw up a stiff defense that kept pushing the Tigers back. When Cape’s quarterback dropped back to pass, he was rushed hard, and when he was tackled, the ball was fumbled. It was then that Mr. Touchdown” himself, Charles Hinrichs, scored by falling on the loose ball. Dur- ing the rest of the game the Mules de- fense held to insure the victory. 69 The Mules won next from Dexter 32-7. Charles Hamber scored the first two TD’s taking the first one 7 yards and the second one 5 yards. Not long after that Bruce Nall heav- ed a 6 yard scoring pass to Danny Stout. Shortly after that Nall threw another TD pass; this time it was to George Danner. With the Mules far ahead, Coach Lohr decided to give everyone a chance to play. It didn’t take long for the Mules to get their last TD of the night with Larry Vaughn taking it in from 59 yards out. As time was running out, Dex- ter finally scored their first and only TD of the night. Charleston also proved to be easy victims, as the Mules rolled over them by a score of 33-6. Eddie Pat- terson scored the first TD when he picked up a loose ball and walked into the end zone. Right after half- time the Mules made their second TD of the night with Eastburn tak- ing it over from the 3. When the Mules got the ball again, it wasn’t long before they put it in the end zone with Richard Lay taking it over from the one foot line. The Mules were soon driving for another score, but an attempted pitchout went into the hands of a Charleston player who went 95 yards to score. After that bit of embarrassment, the Mules scored two more times. Eastburn scored the first, and Larry Vaughn scored the second. 70 In the next game, the Mules were beaten by Malden by a score of 14-0. Unfortunately, it was just one of those nights when the Mules couldn’t seem to do anything right. Right after the opening kickoff the Malden team drove 75 yards to score. Malden scored again just before the half to take a 14-0 lead. For the rest of the game neither team could move the ball well enough to score. The Mules ended their season by defeating the Chaffee Red Devils by a score of 7-0. This game marked the end of the high school careers of 14 members of the Mules squad. These members are the following: Charles Hinrichs, Roger Hefner, John Eastburn, Eddie Patterson, Bobby Christian, Danny Stout, Charles Hamber, Charles Hamp- ton, Mike McGath, Charles Smith, Jim Minner, Jim Ferguson, Mike Huntington and Junior Meyers. The only score of the game came when Bruce Nall pitched a scoring pass of 7 yards to Larry Vaughn. 71 VARSITY SQUAD -Left to Right: Clark, Holeman, Nall, Danner. Hamber, Henson.
