You're just in time to go with us on a TOUR of the new school. Your guide for the trip will be THE BLUFF. Presented here for retrospection are some events of the school year 1957- '58, as we the yearbook staff have recorded it for you. Herein you will be introduced to the beautiful new school building, your teachers, your classmates, the activities, the phe- nomena of life at PBHS.... Vocational Agriculture building Auto Mechanics Industrial Arts Building One of our most important depart- ments of P.B.H.S. is that of Social Studies, for it is here that we learn what is expected of us as future citizens. In each of these classes, American History, World History, Government, Missouri History, Sociology, all teaching centers around the individual. Studies are made of the world to develop understanding and tolerance. In all classes the democratic principle is kept inthespotlight, showing that America's greatness lies in its belief in democracy. Mr. Acre, Mr. Kinder, Mrs. Osborn, Miss Aldrich, Mr. Fortner, and Miss Statler are all striving to build and to instill a desire for a more complete and useful life in our four systems - political, economic, social, and religious. Skill jCeacts The development of useful skills and good taste is stress- ed in our practical arts cour- ses. They seek to offer exper- iences which emphasize the individual talents and abilities of the students in effectively meeting the personal and social problems of living in the home, school, and community. Our teachers, Mr. Campbell, Mr. Clanahan, Mr. Garman, Mr. Gipson, Mr. Hobbs, Mrs. Metz, Mrs. Penn, Miss Quertermous, Mrs. Simmons, Mr. Ridge, Miss Riley, Mr. Scoville, Mrs. Swain, and Mrs. Wyatt, strive to promote orig- inality of thought, and by the use of reasoning and planning, hope to build a well-balanced individual. %e Way c7o ffi. CJ rogress Speech techniques are learned in a special course thr- ough actual participation. Our teacher, Mrs. Kinder stresses efficiency in all types of ex- pression which good citizens will need in their social, rec- reational, and vocational pur- suits jCanguage is the Many skills are stressed in our P.B.H.S. English courses. In addition to the fundamentals of grammar, the pupil is taught to interpret and evaluate what he reads. Vocabulary and literary appreciation are aided by the many written and oral activities which are offered by the teachers of English: Cassie Aldrich, Joyce Brake, Myrtle Corbett, Mary Crowe, Oleta Daniel, Ruth Minetree, and Zora Stevens. French is the foreign language of- fered at P.B.H.S. under the instruction of Joyce Brake. The students who elect to take this subject acquire a knowledge of the structure of the language and a speaking command through translations. 16 The ever popular chorus and music classes are designed not only to be useful but also for relaxation. Our teachers, Joe Smith and Martha Stewart, strive to plan their courses to help the individual, as well as the group, because they feel that education should fit people for living a full, satisfactory life. Sssence of MU Sciences Offered in science are physics chemistry, and biology. These sciences are keys to the past and future in that they are important to every phase of modern living. Jewell Ivester, and Keith Miller, are the instructors of this large branch of learning at P.B.H.S. The mathematics courses encourage clear thinking and perserverance. Through the intelligent study of math- ematical principles, students are pre- pared for future scientific, industrial, or professional careers. Louis Sewell is the instructor of geometry, advanced algebra, and trigonometry. . Applied Academics Under the leadership of Hert Wickman, members of the art classes are striving to further scholastic in- terest in, and understanding of art by developing a better appreciation of the basic principles through self-ex- pression and general application. In the physical education department, Mrs. Powers, Mr. Wyatt, Mr. McKeel, Mr. Gibbs, and Mr. Wickham are trying to aid normal body growth and promote hygienic habits of exercise. They endeavor to present a sportsmanlike program of physically wholesome, mentally stimulating, and socially sound activities which contribute to the present and future well-being of the students. 18 At P.B.H.S, the driver's training course promotes and encourages safe and courteous driving. During the two sem- ester courses, Richard Kinder stresses self-confidence by requiring each pupil to drive in traffic. Through the use of visual aids, eye tests, text- book material, movies, and the necessary information re- quired to pass their State drivers' test, each student is personally helped to become a skilled, safe, and courteous driver. MISSOURI To The Bluff Staff and to the Pupils of Poplar Bluff Senior High School. May I express appreciation for a school activity well done. Your Yearbook of 1958 is a remembrance of your school which you will value for a long time. In a way it is a dedica- tion of a wonderfully usable new high school building. No doubt you have enjoyed your Yearbook and your new building very much. Their values, however great, should not be confused with the true fundamentals of your education. If you are to be of real use in helping our American free- dom you must have the ability and the willing- ness to think . Josiah Royce. a great American philosopher and teacher once wrote. Thinking is like loving and dying. Each of us must do it for himself. No matter how good is your build- ing, your activities, your education; if you cannot or will not think and form opinions on the problems that face yourtime. then your life will not help preserve a free America. A lovely setting was created by the hard working, juniors. A huge moon lit-£ blue and silver sky. The stage was transformed in less than two weeks to a natural bridge complete with a 40 foot waterfall, tremendous boulders, and a rock garden seating the band, which was engulfed by the waterfall's mist. Crystal-like trees lent the ro- mantic touch. The gym floor was a garden scene with pickets and archways. A wishing well lent a touch of fantasy land, and over it all, the subtle glow of a sullen moon cast an orange glow to the dancers. Tom Leonardo's band was well received by the students and there was a large crowd present for the last number...the sign of a truly successful Junior-Senior Prom. The fall season began with an exciting round of volleyball. Inter-group tournaments soon moved into the spotlight. As the year progressed basketball, tennis, softball, and badminton were only a portion of the diversified sports in the girls' physical education department. Volleyball Champions ROW I: Anna Pruett. They ex- hibited superior form and provided good material for the following sea- son. We are sure that the team of '58 will carry on the spirit and de- termination of our school. ■■■ ■ NIC Golf The Golf team of '57 displayed great abilities in the many matches in which they participated. Perhaps the highlight of the season was the winning of fifth place in the State Meet held in St. Louis. We are looking forward to seeing the '58 team bring in many dividends for PBHS. Business Manager; Alan Headaches! Take an oversized bunch of swarming, unidentified sophomores; add the general chaos and confusion which is naturally associated with a new building, and you have a practical working idea of the situation of the Bluff Staff. But now,it's over. The checks, doublechecks, and all the terrifying adventures that accompany them are finished. The once bustling staff room is now silent awaiting distribution day. Then that day arrives. If the Bluff is favorable, then all the frustration, work and worry will have been worthwhile. Thus, with sincere hope that this 1958 yearbook will recall the times of the past year as you wish to remember them, we write the last line for another BLUFF. Bluff Editors The backbone of any yearbook is a group of people known as the staff. They are the ones who always had a test the morning following the night they were called by the worried editors and told that their copy was due the following morning; and moreover, always seemed to pass the test. To these people go our heartfelt thanks for a job well done. Just as it is impossible to include all events of the year in the book, so is it impossible to name individually all deserving people. Therefore, a sincere but inadequate thanks go to the staff, the salesmen, and the teachers for their cooperation. Last June when the planning for the book began now seems a long way off and few on the staff realized the terrific amount of work which had to be done after the basic ideas were crystallized. But we managed to struggle through it and had a good deal of fun in the process. Now comes the great test of our labors...the approbation, or lack of it, of you the reader. If you enjoyed the TOUR...if it has been fun for you, then the year has been a full and rich one and it is with a deep sense of pride and satisfaction that we have guided you on this TOUR of our new school. Sincerely, Jay Githens and Sheila Bagby Co-Editors 73 I MMM With his acceptance into the Quill and Scroll, a high school journalist has reached one important goal; for mem- bership in this organization is granted only to those whose writing and other journalistic work has been approved by the national organization. Bluffer Staff There's always a deadline to meet. This is an understood quote to the Bluffer Editor and his staff. Although a large quantity of work is required, twicfe each month the deadline is met. Planning, writing copy and editing are only part of the many things which go into a publication. Next comes the task of set- ting the type, running it through the press, and distribution. Each time this work is completed, we have another enjoyable edition of which PBHS is proud. JOHN STANARD - Editor ROW I: Bob Cope. Jim Schremp, David Powers, John Barham. ROW II: Terry Allen. The teenagers had a pro- blem: too much to do. They scurried to classes, trying in five minutes to stop at their lockers, grab their books, chat with friends, and still get to the third floor before the bell. In class they learned, all in one day, how to find X_ if you know Y and Z; how to conjugate irregular verbs; how to measure the speed of sound. Yet they found time to help others. a.: —— From the first bell in the morning to the last'bell for dismissal, P.B.H.S. hummed with activity. Elections were held; the newspaper was published; work on the yearbook progressed; and assemblies were held. Movie projectors purred in the classrooms and quiet conversation drifted from the counselor's office. Students chatted while waiting in line. Their voices rang through the halls as they practiced for the approaching concerts. Noon and while the teachers relaxed or prepared for the next class, gleeful sounds of merrymaking drifted through the halls as young Poplar Bluff turned momentarily from a busy schedule. Activity held full sway in the gym—shuffleboard, dancing, or watching that interclass volleyball game occupied their time. Strains from the piano upstairs or music from the orchestra could be heard. Outside a tug of war took place or they just played. As the rumble of the automatic dishwasher died down, the loud speaker blared forth Attention Please. After school they trudged off to part time jobs; went to a coke hour; met the gang at the drug store. Laughter was heard as the majorettes prac- ticed new twirls and clubs held meetings and initiations. Basketball players practiced in the gym, but the track team doing road work in the balcony out-yelled them. m SkT.fi ftf. Evenings they hurried to meetings, games and parties, or attended the bonfire rally before the football game. The spirit of loyalty still rang as the cheerleaders tried new yells at pep ses- sions, decorated the goal posts and prac- ticed turns. Christmas was a wonderful time at P.B.H.S. Committees hunted for greenery, prepared and hung decorations. Dances in the gym made the season one of great festivity. The sound of joyful music filled the halls. The music of the choir rose to the rafters as the curtain fell on the nativity scene to tell of the real meaning of Christmas. These young Poplar Bluffians had their serious moments. They found facts about dif- ferent occupations; searched through books; worked quietly and spent some time medita- ting on the goals they were setting for them- selves; learned how laws were made; relaxed after exams; took courses and spoke to others about the fields that interested them. Mr. Gutierrez is a participant in the 1957 International Teachers Education Program. His field of specialization is Secondary Education, Ad- ministration and Supervision of National Commercial School. -ss SS4a iertr Students at P.B.H.S. were never so busy that they did not take time to extend a hearty greeting and to act as hosts to our distinguished visitors from other lands. The Future Farmers of P.B.H.S. acted as hosts to a group of agriculture trainees from Iran. Their extensive tour took them throughout Missouri wherethey visltedseveralschools andcolleges. Poplar Bluff was proud that It was one of the schools chosen for inspection. From the time the first shovel of dirt was turned, the people of Poplar Bluff kept their eyes on the progress of the building. Even though dif- ficulties were en- countered. they were finally overcome and the structure was ready to enter when the bell rang on September 3, 1957. All you have seen in the pages of this yearbook shows how a student body received this struc- ture andturned it into the center of activity for young Poplar Bluff. ...and now your TOUR is through... another school year has passed. This is the new Poplar Bluff High School after her first graduating class. The Seniors are gone...but there will be more...this year is finished...but the next will begin all too soon. The halls are quiet now, and lifeless, but there will be other terms, other pulsating crowds, other young people eager to learn, and these halls, these classrooms will accept them. Until next year, when it is time for another tour, a brief goodbye to P.B.H.S. - a year older and a year stronger.
