The Bluff Poplar Bluff High School Poplar Bluff, Missouri 1955 ✓ H a CLARENCE E. O’NEAL C. E. O'Neal, who served on the school board for twenty-three years, held as his philosophy of life the advancement of sportsmanship, fellow- ship, and loyalty. His devotion and faithful service to his friends, the student body, faculty, and the many alumni who knew and admired him, showed that he actually lived his philosophy. To the memory of Mr. O’Neal, we dedicate the BLUFF of 1955. 15176144 In a school crammed full of activities, at times we found it hard to work on “The Bluff. Yet after a full year's work in planning, doing research, writing copy, and tackling the vast num- ber of small tasks, we enjoyed producing the book you now hold in your HANDS. Not only did we learn to know p. B. H S- more personally, but also our love for it increased. We found that our school, as we know it today, is built upon a combination of ideals. These ideals are the culmina- tion ol the efforts and the contributions, the visions and the aspirations ot the many students and teachers who have entered its doors, passed through its halls, and received its influence. Our ideal was to produce a HAND book which will enable you to recall the pleasant memories at P. B. H. S. in 1 954- '55. GUIDING HANDS .. Administration.... WORKING HANDS . ..Classes ,, .. As your success is realized, our compensation is increased. The welfare of our students and school are our first consideration. You are graduating into a world filled with such tensions between nations it becomes obliga- tory that you cling to the ideals of co-operation, patriotism, and fealty developed during your four years at P. B. H. S- You leave us with our best wishes. 6 Superintendent’s Message To you who have worked faithfully to produce this book and to you who will enjoy it, greetings. Each of you has given and each of you will receive and share in the values of this book. The giver and the receiver are not separate but are a pair. Both profit by the exchange. G. R. JLoughead, Superintendent Poplar Bluff Public Schools I -----ToTny friends, the students in Senior High: It is with deep appreciation and a sense oi gratitude that I write these greetings to you, the students in Senior High. Appreciation for the opportunities you have been offered during your stay in our high school, and gratitude for the friendship of and the association with so many fine young people who are so typical of American youth today. If I have failed you somewhere along the way, I am truly sorry. If I have, in some small measure, helped you along youth’s pathway, I am glad. Best wishes and many thanks, E. T. The contest was very warmly received and appreciated by our members, and I would like to take this opportunity to describe to you the way that we organized it. SECOND ATTENDANT Miss Mary Henrickson FIRST ATTENDANT Miss Carol Swindel The pictures of all the contestants were ar- ranged in our offices, and the contest was open for a period of one week. Each member of our organization was asked to vote for a first and second choice. The popularity of the contest here can be seen from the fact that 67 of our 69 mem- bers voted in it. At the end of the week the votes were totaled, two points going for a first choice, and one point for a second. On the basis of these points, first, second, and third place winners were selected, as well as two honorable mention places, and the results were announced to our members. Speaking for all our members, 1 want to thank you sincerely for choosing us to act as judge of your contest, and to wish you every success with your 1955 yearbook. Sincerely yours, William K. Dabney President HONORABLE MENTION Nancy Kurz Helen McCarthy Orchestra The band and orchestra have improved steadily this year under the direction of Mr. Joe Smith. Co-operation and hard practice have helped them to advance. The band made several trips this year; the most important were the Band Festival at Jackson and the Cotton Carnival at Memphis.
