The Bluff staff has done an ex- cellent job of portraying life in Senior High School during this school year of 1950-51. I feel sure that in after years when you turn the pages of this book, many fond memories of your Senior High days will return to bring you happinessg and, perhaps, a wee bit of sadness. I wish for you the best of all the good things of lifeg and may God bless you in all your endeavors. Cordially yours, 50? E. T. PETE PETERS Principal EMERY T. PETERS Principal PAT WEBER Secretary GEORGE R. LOUGHEAD Superintendent And I saac's servants digged in the valley, and found there a well of springing water. To you who in the exultation of youth may look this way there are, in the broad valleys of your minds deep wells of thought, of love, of human understand- ing, of faith in God and man, of good work done, and of hopes for tomorrow. To set these hidden wells springing, make them alive and fruitful, only you can' dig into the depths of your own mind. The wells will not be opened by the servants of Isaac, by your servants, or by the servants of any other one. Only you and you alone can open the wells of your mind and keep them open during a whole lifetime. tion E R. LOUGHEAD CLARABELLE GRAY Superintendent Secretary yw-ri' fs Left to right: Harold Collardg C. E. O'Nealg E. W. Jiles, Presidentg C. M. Leeg V. H. Stewardg Scott Cotrell, Vice-President. Sechrest was chosen president as a result of the election of class officers, others were: Jeannette Lam bert, Vice-president, Frances Frey, Secretary, and Bob Hendrickson, Treasurer. At the first class meeting Mr. Donald Swain, Miss Peggy Burge, Mrs. Ruth Minetree, and Mr. Stanley Conner were chosen as sponsors. The regular sale of Curtis maga- zines, Christmas cards, and gift wrappings was conducted by the seniors, and the stands at the foot- ball and, basketball games were op- erated under their management. This was the initial year for the sale of Siar Times newspapers and the presentation of the Barbershop- pers as a means of soliciting funds. The Senior Play directed by Miss Burge was presented in April. The juniors again played host to the seniors at the Prom. The event of supreme interest was the trip to New Orleans in May. The picnic was enjoyed shortly before the Baccalaureate and Com- mencement exercises conclusively ended the year. Plfsident-N. S. With the advice and able sponsorship of Mr. Swain it has helped the students in many ways. It has sponsored dances, athletic events, and many other activities in an effort to promote the betterment of all concerned. The ultimate result of this system, in which the students themselves make many of the rules and regu- lations, has been a better realization of the necessity for working together and a wider understanding of democracy. With ten lettermen returning, Coach Wyatt, along with the able assistance of line mentor, E. B. Cox, developed a ball club with stamina and fortitude, and, most of all, the desire to win ball games. Although the 1950 team did not enjoy as success- ful a season in the way of scores asgin times past, they emerged from the gridiron season with a team that could give anybody a fight and one that the students of Senior High, the faculty, and Gus Fan of this town should be proud of. After their tremendous victory over West Plains the Mules met a strong Arkansas eleven from Blythe- ville and were dumped for a 26-12 loss. This game was tabbed by many as one of the best played by the team although they were defeated. The Piggott Mohawks journeyed to our fair city on September 29 and handed the Mules a 7-6 loss decided in the closing minutes of the contest. The Mules had led for three periods but a last minute drive along with a conversion turned the trick for the Hawks. Hitting the road the following week end, the Mules could find no sympathy from the Kennett Indians and were promptly shut out 12-0. Drives for the Mules 'just couldn't be cashed in on and we went down in defeat. Jackson came to town on the ensuing Friday and left the Mules in a terrible fix. They completely out- played us in every way and when the game was over we were on the short end of a 33-20 score. Cairo was the next team on the Mules agenda, and they were very bad guests as they won a lop-sided victory over the Mules 31-12. Coach Bland's crew from Cairo poured on the pressure and took advantage over the Mules' slow start. The team headed south to Caruthersville the fol- lowing week, but it was the same old story, only not quite so bad this time. The final score read, Caruthers- ville 27, Poplar Bluff 19. By this time the Mules had had enough of losing and Perryville took the blow on the head when the team came out of its slump. They traveled to Perry- ville on November 3 and shellacked the Pirates 25-0, on a rain-soaked field before a few faithful fans. Seeing how good it felt to win, the Mules again turned the trick by trouncing the Charleston Blue- jays 28-0 before a wind-chilled homecoming audience and the football royalty, the queen being Miss Becky Barbour and attendants, Miss Sherra Do Foard and Miss Sue Davis. The old grads of the 1926 team were the guests of honor at the homecoming game. They were shown how the game of football should be played during the contest. Cape Girardeau, our new Turkey Day opponent, came to P. B. on Thanksgiving and held the Mules to a 14-14 draw, with a last minute rally. The game was slowed up by the snow that began to fall in the first period and continued to do so. This tie formally ended the 1950 grid season. Nts! ,I -:- 1 N CAGE .Y The 1951 basketball season will be well remembered in the minds of students for years to come. Pre-season estimates gave the Mules little chance to win over half the games played but things proved differently as the season began. Coach Haynes in his initial year at P.B.H.S. gained much favorable comment and made many new friends. . Now let us take a brief look at the basketball summary. We opened the season with a 33-30 victory over the Pilots of Cairo. The boys looked good in this one and everyone was happy with the great showing the team made. The Mules then traveled to Kennett and met a strong Indian aggregation, but turned them back also, this time 55-52. Bismarck came to town for the last game before the Christmas holidays and the team promptly white-washed them 52-33. The Mule train then traveled to Cape Girardeau for the annual Christmas tournament and surprised many people by Winning third place. The first game was with Perryville which we won 40-34. Jackson also won in the first round and played the Mules in the quarter-finals, but the team took care of them with a 46-40 win. Then the bottom fell out and a rip-roaring Puxico outfit scalped the Mules 78-38. However, the Mules had already gained the right to play for third place which we won by edging Sikeston 56-54. The team then went on a 9 game winning streak after the holidays which thrilled many loyal Mule RY fans. Among the nine wins were victories over Campbell, a 27-21 win over Cape, a 38-37 edge over our arch-rival, Doniphan, a 42-23 victory over Caruth- ersville, another win over Cape, this time 40-31. Also included in the streak was a 64-16 victory over Green- ville, a win over Van Buren in a tight one, 59-52, and rounding out the consecutive wins were victories over Dexter 40-31 and Bayless of St. Louis County 63-38. The Mules then traveled to Blytheville, but a tall Chickasaw team edged them out with a 45-42 win. Doniphan came over for a return game the following Friday and won a 53-52 victory. We then traveled to Charleston and promptly defeated them 50-29. A small court and an off night seemed to be the cause of the loss to Clarkton which finished the regular season. Then the regional tournament began. The Mules drew Seneath as a first round opponent and barely edged them 49-48. Caruthersville proved quite a surprise but the Mules finally got by them with a 34-27 win. This' brought the Mules to the finals of the tourney with the opponent being our arch- rival, Sikeston. Sikeston having the advantage of the height took almost complete possession of the rebounds, and the team came out of the tournament with a loss to Sikeston, 49-42 a swell second place trophy. All in all the season was quite a success and the team came out with a 18-5 record, a truly great season. B SQUAD RKIMWIEIO Track Season The Mule track team enjoyed one of its finest turn outs in the history of the school. Some 89 boys gave Coach Wyfatt a wealth of material to pick from. Since baseball was discontinued Coach Haynes assisted Wyatt in a very noble fashion and both men are to be commended for their cease- less and untiring efforts. Together with the boys they produced a team that Poplar Bluff should well be proud of. The following boys lettered. They are: Travis Montgomery, Bill Salyers, Larry Wright, Harold Palmer, Roy Tibbs, N. Sechrest, jim Cruee, Donald Brannum, and Dale Dickens, w 4- ,p-:-...mf , f q Nr 'Q L' :VF ,gy fy' if ..- -Q in?- vu! y. :gli . A hx K 1 K!
