America asked what kind of people are- these Nissourians who produced inen like Harry S. Truman, and other notables such as Mark Twain, lihigene Field, John J. Pershing, Kit Carson, Thonias Hart Benton, Daniel Boone and many outstanding personages too nunier- ous to ine-ntion. Missouri has contributed richly also to the colorful history that goes to inake up America with the Pony ltlxpress, Lewis and Clark EX- pedition, the first railroad west of the Mississ- ippi, l'ur trading, and many other historical events. lt is to this adventurous group ot' pioneers and to the three million six hundred thousand living Nissourians who have given to our state and are helping her keep the well earned title of lXlother ot' the West, we dedicate our book. Atkins was one of the greatest offensive and defensive backs in the conference this year. He led the team in scoring for the second year. Two year total 90 points, Big Joe Bess earned his third. letter in football this season. He was one of the most outstanding guards on the gridiron this year. Will sorely be missed next year. The third of our returning' lettermen this year, Rex was a great asset to the backfield. He had few equals for speed and was tops on defense. Two year total six ty points. Our second Bess, Buddy turned out to be a real bang-up lineman this year. With one more season he should. develop into an all-star tackle. Paul's second season with the Mules. After injurics in the Perryville game he was shifted to reserve tackle. His weight on the line will be missed next year. Kenny was a consistent fighter all season, he pulled the Mules out of the hole in the Turkey Day game catching a pass fcr the winning touchdown. ' Bob's first year of football, with this experience he should make a real back next year. One of the small- cst backs in the district, his fight made up for his weight. Richard started the season playing a twin guard with Birkhead, later they were shifted to ends, he climax- ed his football career, scoring on a pass against Dexter. Frankie was Junior High's contribution to the Mule s' eleven this year. With three more years to go Frank should. wind up a real athletic career. It is true that they did.n't win any trophys or set any records, but you have seen a preview of the material that will make the future teams. We were rated low in the wins and losses column, but for an outclassed team we were never outfought. We were blanked f-our times, Perryville, Jackson, Kennett and Caruthersville, and held to one touchdown in three games: Cape Central, Sikeston, and Charlestong we managed two victories throughout the season over Pigglott, Ark., and Dexter. N , , ', At the opening of the season, we had the services of three lettermen, Charles At- kins, J-oda Bess, and Rex Gorman. Atkins was later chosen team captain, Bess as co-captain, and Gorman served as acting captain throughout the season. In the All- Southeast Missouri Conference Football Team poll con ucted by the Daily American Republic Charles Atkins was placed as second team fullback and Joda Bess won a sec- ond team guard berth. Rex Gorman and Alvin Bess received honorable mention. Graduating lettermen include: Capt. Atkins, Co-Capt. Bess, Paul Goad, Richard Hewes, Kenneth Birkhead, Carol Duley, and Kenneth Wood. Junior lettermen: Alvin Bess, Bob Hudson, Don Allard., Bob Glaze, and Floyd Garrett. Sophomore lettermen: Bob Robinson, Charles Bell, Rex Gorman, and Richard Capps. Freshmen lettermen: Frank Case, Jr., and Paul Porterfield. Team Where Played We They Cape Central Cape 6 39 Perryville Here 0 20 Jackson Jackson 0 21 Piggott, Ark. Usually much smaller than the opposing centers he held his men to a minimum of points. He took top scoring honors for the team this season with 153 points. We lose a swell center and an all-around fellow to some lucky college. Herbert Abbie Absheer fGuard-Co-Capt., '45, '46J. One of our two returning lettermen this year, Herbie was the most consistant player we had. There wasn't a better rebound man in the region this year. When he failed to score he was there to assist someone else. Fourth high scorer for the season, he netted 124 points. We are ex- pecting plenty of Herb next season. Laddie Lad Stovall fForward, '46j. Laddie's ball handling was a real asset to the squad this season. Lad- die scored in every game and set the high for individual scoring for a single game with his 22 points against Corning. He ranked. second In scoring with 142 points. He should really rack 'em up next year. Johnny Lawson lGuard, '46J. One of the smallest players in the district, Johnny made up for his heighl with his speed and ball handling. His streaks and fast dribbles down the court accounted for many Mule points this season. Third high in scoring this year he tossed in 136 points. We are looking forward to having John- ny back with the squad next season. Norman Squeeky B-ounds fForward, '46J. Norman has gained lots of experience with the team this season and is showing much improvement toward a real ball player. What he lacked in ball handling and speed h' made up for in his rebounds and shooting. Though nof playing as much as the other four he racked up 110 points for the season. Norman will be back next year and promises to be an all star forward. l945-46 Basketball Summer Mules 24, Broseley 25 CHereJ We opened the season, dropping a one point decision to Broseley. Taking a 19 to Il lead at the halftime, we fell under par in the final period. Atkins was without his glasss and Herbie wasn't hitting. Stovall took top honors with 11 points. The B boys fell 24-10. Morse and Garman were high. Mules 33, Campbell 20 fHereJ We came out of the slump and collected a victory over the Campbell cagers. Trail- ing up to the third period, Abbie and Atkins brought us out of the hole. Abbie was high with 10 points followed by Atkins with 9. Another loss for the B boys 22-18. Birkhead high with 5 pts. Mules 44, Campbell 30 C'l'hereJ Our second victory over the Camels. We were beginning to show some real style. Atkins hit his stride to drop in 16 points. Lawson hit the bucket for 9. The B squad were trodden under 23-19. Hewes led the scorers with 7 points. Mules 34, Doniphan 37, Cfherel We still don't know what happened, outplaying the Dons all evening we fell by a. three point margin. Atkins again took top honors dropping in 21 poits, Stovall T. The B team played a swell game to the final whistle, Doniphan won 34-32. Penning- ton was out in front with 10 points. Mules 38, Jackson 35 CHereJ Our first victory over the Indians in a number of years. We held the lead through- out the game. Stovall hit the loop for 14 points, Abbie followed with 9. Our B team was overshadowed 36-23. Garman hit for 0 polnts. Mules 48, Dexter ll C'I'hereJ The first time we had beaten the Bearcats on their home court 1n two years. The scoring was pretty evenly spread out, Lawson leading with 13 points. Our Soph- omore five was beanten in the final minutes 30-26. Casey high with 9 points. Mules 38, Sikeston 32 Clie-rel We chalked up another victory with a win over the Sikeston Bulldogs on our home court. The 'Dogs could-n't harness our fast break. Lawson and Bounds tied for top honors with 12 points each. The secondary game went to Sikeston, Peters was high with 17 points. Mules 24, Caruthersville 30 CHereJ Our first game with the Tigers in a number of years. We held a lead until the final quarter when Cantrell and Correll took over. We lost to a good team. Sechrest tossed in 10 points for high man. Our B boys won in an overtime 26-22, their first victory of the season. Peters hit the bucket for 8 points. Mules 27, Jackson 32 CTherej We dropped our second game of the week, losing to Jackson on their home court. It seemed to be more of a football than a basketball game. Stowall's end runs and Atkins' center plunges put them in the top bracket with 6 points each. The B squad was pushed all over the floor 34-13, Peters was again high with 5 points. Mules 70, Corning, Ark. 45 CHereJ The unbeaten Corning five payed the Mules a visit, and took their first defeat of the season in one of the Mules' all out offensive games. Trailing in the first quarter 18-12, we really turned the heat on for the next three. Stovall tossed in 22 points and Bounds hit for 19. Don Morse's free toss in the final minutes, add.ed the second B victory 25-24. Peters and Casey were high with 7 each. Mules 29, Doniphan 23 CHereJ Sweet revenge, we really poured the heat on Doniphan this time, outplaying and outscoring them, holding them to 2 points in the final period. Stovall was high with 9 points. The B team dropped another, 14-21. Peters was high with 5 points. Mules 31, Broseley 33 CThereJ Broseley held- a jinx over us all season. Fatal points in the final minutes took a heavy toll. Sechrest and Atkins each hit for 9 apiece. The time will come. The little Mules had a tough nite and dropped another, 13-29. Pete was high again with 5 pts. Mules 29, Sikeston 45 Cfherej Our worst defeat all season, the boys weie outscored but not outfought. The Bull- dog gym was too small for our fast break. Stovall hit the basket for 11 points, Law- son for 7. The B boys really took a beating 29-8. Garman, Peters, and Pennington were top scorers with 2 points each. Mules 43, Senath 30 CHereJ It was a good night for our boys as they rolled over the highly praised Senath five. Our long shots proved fatal to the Senath zone, as were hitting everything. Abbie finished with 13 points, Bounds with 10. The BH squad dropped a last minute decision 29-28. Morse resulted high with 10 points. Mules 40, Dexter 23 CHereJ Our final game of the regular season and the crowning of the basketball queen. Prior to the game Dotty Greeson was crowned Queen of the 1946 Mule Cage Team by Captain Chas. Atkins. The boys gave her a fine show, the B team chalked. up an un- expected victory 35-26 and the A boys rolled over Dexter for the second time. Casey was high for the B game with 12 points. Atkins led the A team attack with ln points, followed by Lawson and Absheer with 10 each. Ik ,F Dk lk 44 Drawing a bye the first night of the Sub-Regional Tourney, held here, we were scheduled to meet Broseley the number one seedee team on the second night of play. Breaking the jinx they held over us, we broke away from a 17-17 deadlock in the third period to win 24-21. Lawson was high in this game with 9 points. Un the final night of play, we were to meet Patterson, who had upset the strong Greenville team the night before, for the Tournament Championship. Our boys brought home the trophy, winning the game 39-18. Abbie was high for the Mules with 10 points. The following week we journeyed to Kennett to compete with the top seven teams in our region. We drew Cooter for the first night and came out on the Long end of a 42-25 score. Atkins was high with 12points. The second and most critical night of the tourney for us, we met the strong Hornersville qintet, as Henson and Co. really poured it .on, our boys played a swell game, but Hornersville's height was too much and we fell 43-30. Bounds took top honors with 10 points. Our non-spirited boys dropped the consolation finals to Caruthersville and fell into fourth place after taking a 43-27 de- feat. Stovall hit the bucket for high man on the final night with 8 points. As for the total summary of the season the Mules wen 12 and dropped 8 games, winning the Sub-Regional Tournament and placing fourth in the Regional Tourney. We compiled a total of 714 points to our opponents' 631. Atkins took top honors for the A boys with a seasonal total of 153 points. George Peters was high for the B boys with 81 points. Returning next year, the team will have the services of four regular lettermen from this season, Absheer, Stovall, Lawson and Bounds, and the starting B team five: Rex Gorman, George Peters, John Casey, Vernon Pennington, and Donald Morse. SIDELI E SNAPS By Sammy Giambelluca This will be my closing installment in my column, so I have decided to write sort of a summary for the graduating Seniors on the three years of P.B.H.S. athletics that we have been a part of, in our three years of high school. This is my own opinion, so don't blame anyone else. ill all Ill Il' 41 The main achievements of the three year period should be credited to the Football team of 1944, the Basketball team of 1946, and the Track squad of 1944. ll I ll 'I 1 Football games that to me will live ln your memory: The Poplar Bluff-Oaruthersvllle of '44, we won over the champions-to-be 27 to 14 on their home gridiron. Our own Charley Atkins scored two of the four touchdowns made that afternoon. The big thrill came seevral weeks later in the Dexter-Mules game played on our home gridiron. The Mules pounded out a 35-6 victory, but the highlight of the evening was Capt. Norman Whitaker's 110 yard touchdown dash. The '44 track team kept their slate clean, winning all four of their regularly sched- uled meets. Later at the State Meet in Columbia Capt. Clayton Liles placed the Mules in fifth place, compiling eight points, winning the class A 100 yard dash and placing second in the 220 yard dash. Now, down to basketball, I need not repeat what I have already written for the athletic pages of this year's annual, P.B.H.S. is certainly proud of this fine group of athletes, without doubt they are headed for glory next season. 'K ak ak BF 44 Our own Senior lettermen include: Charles Atkins 171, Joda Bess 131, Kenneth Wood 131, Sam Giambelluca 191, Richard Hewes 121, Kenneth Birkhead 121, Ray Weav- er 121, Carol Duley 111, Paul Goad 111, John Blue 111, and Bob Sechrest 131. 'F 'li ik S Ill Names that I know you will remember. All are products of our three years: Track: Clayton Liles, Eldon Palmer, Alvin Minetree, Raymond Epps, Norman Whitaker, Howard Francis, Rex Garman . . . and many other fine track men too numer- cus to mention. Basketball: Charles Atkins, Eldon Palmer, Ladd-ie Stovall, Johnny Lawson, Herbert and Paul Absheer, Norman Bounds, Bob Sechrest. Football: MY ALL THREE YEAR TEAM Player Years Position Ivan Taylor 43-44 Left End Bob Sechrest 43-44 Left End Bob Dodwell 43-44 Left Tackle Howard Francis 42-43 -4-'I Left Guard Rex Goddard 1c1 42-43 Center Leo Saracini 43-44 Right Guard Marvin Barbour 42-43 Right Tackle Allen Sielert 43-44 Right End Norman Whitaker 1c1 42-43-44 Quarterback Rex Garman 44-45 Halfback Eldon Palmer 43-44 I-Ialfback Charles Qualls 42-43 Halfback Charles Atkins 44-45 Fullback lk Ill 8 Ili it Yes, Seniors it is all over now, the Pep assemblies, parades, last minute plans be- fore the games, hiking out to the gym on a cold night for basketball, or standing in the hot sun all afternoon to watch our boys carry the maroon and white to victory. We have all had lots of fun and it will be tough leaving them, to me athletics make the school year, I hope my column will help to bring back pleasant memories of all this. ii? E' iii? I945 TRACK S EASON Finishing as one of the top teams in the district, the Mules picked up three victories in four meets, losing their first meet in two years. Falling in their first meet of the season to Campbell and Ken- nett, they came back to win a dual meet over Campbell, win the an- nual Kennett Inv. Meet and win a tri-meet over Hayti and Braggo- docia. Palmer took top honors for the season for his second. year. He set the record in the high jump at Kennett and tied his own record on the local field. He also set a new scoring record for the local track, scoring 25 points in one meet, winning the high jump, bnoad jump, low and high hurdles and the pole vault. Gorman, Collins, and Francis turned in good time on the dash- es. Bell, Frasier, and Wagner the distances, Atkins and Saracini in the weights, Moore in the high and broad jumps, and. Wood and Schweitzer in the relay. Five underclassmen returned for the season of '46, Capt. Kenneth Wood, Charles Atkins, Charles Frasier, Rex Gorman, and Charles Bell. C945 veeecef I!
