The junior Prom, the greatest social event of our high school years, afforded us much pleasure in anticipation and in reality. Although it is now only a memory, it is a memory which will ever linger in our hearts and minds. As we look forward to the responsibilities and pleasures of the future, we pause to thank all those who have made it possible for us to reach this long looked for goalk- the senior year-especially our parents, the faculty, and our Reverend Pastors. To the seniors we offer our best wishes for a bright, happy, and successful future. SGPHOMORES Here we are, half way through our high school course. Now we are really considered full-fledged members of Pope Pius High because of our many successful endeavors. Some of our class members are Student Councilors, Eagle Light reporters, and star athletes. All these factors have helped to make this year especially interesting and urge us to follow the example of those who have preceded us. Through the able guidance of our pastors and teachers we know we shall accomplish this feat. FRESHMEN just ten short months ago, we entered Pope Pius High filled with enthusiasm and awe. It took time for us to become adjusted to the schedule and all the extra curricular activities. However, we came through the initiation, gave the sophomores a party, aided in the yearbook drive, and started a Camera Club. Now we have that Pope Pius High spirit. Wetll be back next year, quite able to use that expression, They're under- classmenf' l 49 IUNIOR CLASS OFFICERS 1219 Preyidefzz .,x.........., .....,...... O 72 Won 9 Lost 1 'kForfeit The year 1948, with Paul Kelley, our new mentor. the Pope Pius High gridders came through with the most successful season in the history of the school. After a shaky start, which included a loss to Saint Cecelia, a tie with St. Marys of Elizabeth, and another setback from Queen of Peace, the Eagles really began to fight back. Later in the season, the Hrst two defeats were turned into victories by forfeit due to ineligibility of a St. Cecelia and a St. Mary's player, Determined not to suffer another setback, the Eagles marched on to submerge Paterson Central. St. Josephs of West New York, Immaculate Conception, and Lodi by considerable margins. Don Bosco, its first year on the football field, proved to be no match for the Blue and Gold. Harrison's winning ways were terminated quickly at the hands of the Eagles. Avenging last season's defeat, the Pope Pius XII High gridders clawed their traditional foe, St. Marys of Rutherford, 72-0. To show acknowledgment and admiration for the feat of guiding such a winning team, Coach Kelley was chosen 'KAll'Catholic Coach of the Year by the N-ICSA. The following players were selected for berths on the Catholic All-State team: Backs: jerry Furst, Dick Sharry, and Dick Mishleng End: Ronnie Duriske, Line: john Goth and Bob Gut. i BASKE TBALL SCHEDULE r1'L'z,lNl Opp. P.P, XII St. joscplis H ,. , 32 28 Paterson Tech, ., , 26 28 St. Marys fpatersonj , i ,,..,. 4-l 48 St. Mziryis qRLlfi1CI'f0I'Li3 37 51 Paterson Tech. ,,,,,,,, 34 -433 Seton Hull ,.,,,, 56 29 Queen of Peace H , 34 56 Queen ot' Peace 34 af St. johns fpatersonj , i 52 5-i Don Bosco , ,, , ,,,, ,, 35 28 Lodi .. . ,,,, 62 28 Alumni , , i ,,,, 59 4282 Iminucuigitc Conception 66 20 Don Bosco ,,,,,,,,,, .... . , , ,, 31 50 St. joscplfs fPatcrsonj ,,,,,,,,, , 43 28 Holy Trinity fHackcnsuCkj ,, ,, 40 41 St. johns figatersonj , ,. 51 -15 St. Muryk fRutherfonij .......,. 38 28 Won 8 Lost IO iff mv-gfwfgze A any 5. V. TEAM xg BASKETBALL The veteran-studded basketball team of 1949 played a tough schedule, but came through with a fairly good record of eight wins and ten losses. The defeats handed to the Eagles can be boasted only by a few teams, whereas, victories gained by the Pope Pius High hoopsters were from a larger number of teams. This proved that the Gold and Bluel' boys were still one of the top teams. The highlight victory of the year was the upset of Holy Trinity of Hackensack, breaking their winning streak of 13 games. Bob Gut, Eagle center, took the scoring honors with 177 points, Rich Sharry as runner-up with 174 points. Bob Varettoni, Pat Wliite, Jerry Furst and Dick O'Brien aided greatly by playing stellar performances every game. 19513194 Q . nhl C' EFRIEADERS Wfhether it be a football or a basketball game, a lively group of cheer- leaders encourage the student body to cheer the team on to victory. Witluout their effort and cries of approval as the Eagles gain another score, much of the color that is so typical of a Pope Pius High sport affair would be lacking. Therefore, from the school to the cheerleaders goes a sincere, Thank you. The cheerleaders in reply wish to extend their expression of gratitude to the team and fans who have so heartily supported them. BAS BALL With ten veteran players back, the Pope Pius High Baseball Team finished a splendid season proving once again their ability in all phases of athletics. Congratulations, Eagle Nine, for all your hard-fought victories. The students are looking forward to another successful season in 1950. 86 TRA CK After a year's lapse the Pope Pius High Track Team sey City Armory and Newark Armory. has been reorganized under the able guidance of Coach The results so far have proved successful enough to Kelley.
