POPE JOHN ON TOUR TABLE OF CONTENTS Seniors 79 Activities Loca History P%ZSy 1°1W 3 1759 00116 3744 Faculty V ON TOUR '88 It has taken four years to complete our high school career at Pope John XXIII Central High. Nobody said it was going to be easy, and for many of us it hasn't been. We have all faced difficult classes, impossible schedules, and strict teachers. The point, however, is that we have made it. In addition, most of us didn't just survive; we accomplished exactly what we set out to do and truly enjoyed ourselves in the process. The feelings of success are evident in some seniors more than in others, but it is an undeniable fact that all of us possess some pride in our accomplishments. Each individual stu- dent will associate Pope John with different events in years to come, but it is our hope that the pictures and words of this yearbook will help tell the collective story of a journey through our senior year at Pope John. THAT'S WHAT FRIENDS ARE FOR As we look back on our four years at Pope John, we find many friendships were made along the way. We laughed at our friends and our friends laughed at us. As we moved from freshman year to senior year, we became friends with more and more peo- ple. We learned about them day after day and year after year. Through those friendships we matured as people and grew closer to- gether. We shared the memories of dances, our sophomore social and our proms, all of which will stay with us forever. 4 5 FOOD, GLORIOUS FOOD Every concert hall has a con- cession stand, and Pope John was no exception. Our twen- ty-five minute intermission within our class day hardly seemed enough time even to choose between the dessert line or the other food” line. The other food line offered us a wonderful selection of delectable treats such as the infamous chicken patty, the well-buttered grilled cheese, the indescribable pizza, and, of course, the Friday special, tuna mixed in with plenty of mayonnaise and served on a foot-long roll. Because the cafeteria didn't always satisfy our need for real food, we had to resort to other alternatives such as Donut Maker, Chris- ty's, Burger King, and, of course, Kelly's Roast Beef. i 6 7 T CANT DRIVE 55! f One of the most thrilling mo- ments of the teenage years was the day we first got our licenses. After six weeks of drivers' education classes and months of terrifying our par- ents as they tried to teach us the rules of the road, we fi- nally got our pink slips. Ex- cited to try them out, we pes- tered Mom and Dad for the family car. Now being “On Tour took on a new mean- ing as we spent our leisure time driving to our friends' houses and taking our pals to Revere Beach to circle around and go down the strip again and again. We wanted to show off our new driving skills, so we raced down the street, only to receive our I first speeding ticket. Evident- ly driving was not going to be the free fun we had expect- ed it to be. But imagine all the fun we would have missed if we had never gotten our licenses. 8 9 BORN TO BE WILD Fun - It's such a tiny word, but it means a va- riety of things to a vari- ety of people. As Pope John students, we spent our free time engaged in numerous activities: go- ing to the movies, hang- ing out at Revere Beach, attending Pope John football games, and making waves at the MC dances. However, there is one pastime that in- cluded almost all mem- bers of our group- THE PARTY. Parties seemed to be the most common sources of entertainment for Pope John upperclassmen. A word mentioned in the hallway could transform a small get-together into a full-scaled bash. It really did not matter where the party was, or who was having it, as long as there was going to be a crowd. As we move on to college and journey toward adulthood, the party scene will be differ- ent; the stage may be bigger, the crowd more diverse. However, partying is an art, and most students have suc- cessfully mastered it. 10 n DREAM ON As we trudged through the application process, taking our S.A.T.'s, going on inter- views, and writing that dreaded essay, we often won- dered, Is college worth all this hassle and anxiety? Now we realize that college was the next step toward reaching our goals and ful- filling many of our dreams. Our tour didn't end with the completion of high school; instead it began anew. We moved on as adults to pursue our interests, meet new peo- ple and prepare to expand our limited world and experience the wide world before us. 12 13 “DON'T STOP BELIEVIN' Even through the rowdi- er times, we never forgot Pope John was a Catho- lic school. How could we forget traveling to the auditorium for Mass? Remember Fr. Raeke's daily inspirations com- ing through the speakers? Campus Ministry, under the leadership of Mr. Fitzgerald, helped spread spirit through the school. Touring to Ips- wich, running freshmen orientation, attending class retreats, and partic- ipating in the Oxfam fast were all part of C.M.'s work and play. Christian Service was also a great unifier at Pope John. Fr. Joe's an- gels of mercy did good deeds for Haley House, M M, the Lafayette School, and our school. each other. There was always a friend we could turn to. As School faith was more than the saying goes, When you any one group, though. We think of old friends, I hope had faith in ourselves and you'll call my name. 14 15 IN MEMORIAM When it is dark, the sun no longer shines, but who can forget the colors of the rainbow? Then there was the fall sports rally which, after all of the hard work and practicing, turned out to be a huge success. The death of their dear friend Wendy Crafts was a horrible tragedy for the whole school, but especially for all of the cheer- leaders who will never forget her big smile. Because the team was so close, they were able to handle the bad times with the good. They always had many good things to look forward to - games, competitions, and ral- lies - and no obstacles could get in their way. Rich Bell, the Tigers fought hard and won their first league championship since 1976. They defeated Arlington Catho- lic, 7 - 6, on Thanksgiving eve to win the title. Like most of their games, this was a classic. Although they lost some of their games, they never gave up. The Tigers were captained by the Revere Charlestown con- nection of Jon Delena and Ed McKinnon. Delena was a returning all-league offensive guard, and the powerful McKinnon was the best defensive end in the league. Ed Sullivan called the offensive signals, and Paul Sobolewski did most of the running. Other Tiger standouts were Sean Duggan, Frank Tunnera, Dan O'Neill, Nino Dono- frio. Rich Oberton, Bill Corbett, and Joe Bossi. Doing all of the booting for Pope John was Andy Nickell. First Row (L-Rk D. O’Neill, S. Duggan, W. Corbett, J. Bossi, E. McKinnon (Co-Capt.), J. The volleyball team finished the fall season of '87 with a 13-5 overall record. This was better than some had expected because the team had lost several veterans from the preceding year. The Volleyball team was disappointed that they didn't win the League Championships due to two losses to Archbishop Williams. However, they qualified for the state tour- naments and easily defeated Boston Tech in the first round. In the semi-finals against Newton North, the Pope John team was definitely the underdog. They man- aged to play their best game ever and won 3-2. The last game was a shut-out, 15-0. Although Pope John lost to a powerful North Quincy team in the final round, the girls achieved what no other Pope John volleyball team had ever accomplished. 1st row (L-R): C. Hubbard, P. Ventura, S. Among the whole team there was a great sense of unity and team spirit. This spirit was one of the key factors in defeat- ing some of our greatest opponents. The seniors will surely miss their team and great coach Sr. Nancy. All of this would not have happened without her enthusiasm and support. 69 First Row: (L-R): D. Boudreau (Tri-capt.), N. Tri-captains Matt Pa- vone, Brian Gruning, and Alex Santilli, along with alternate captains Frank Botta, Joe Bossi, and Bill Ryan, led their team to a rewarding year. Brian Gruning was a strong force in offense and broke a school record by scoring over 100 points in his four years here. He got his support from Alex Santilli, Bill Ryan, Fred Moscone, and Derek Graziosi. Defense was led by Matt Pavone as goalie, with Joe Bossi, Guy Can- to, and P.J.
