... I shall be telling this with a sigh Somewhere ages and ages hence: Two roads diverged in a wood, and I- I took the one less traveled by, And that has made all the difference. Robert Frost Total devotion to one's occupation is a true rarity today. Few individuals are capable of devoting all their time and energies to their professions; still fewer of these are teachers. We at Pope John are fortunate enough to be acquainted with such an individual. She is one who is not only a superior instructor inside the classroom but outside of it as well. She has continually played important roles in the sponsoring and administering of extracurricular activities for the students of Pope John: proms, semi-formals, class trips, and especially the yearbook, which would not be possible without her total dedication. We the 1983 graduating class of Pope John XXIII High School have thereby chosen to dedicate this yearbook to Nancy Whalen as a token of our appreciation for all her endeavors, in the hope that she will continue to work for the benefit of the present and future students at our school for many years to come. Once Upon A Time . . . Our year as Juniors was a busy one. But everybody had a good time! We practiced and prepared to place 1st in our competition. But, Win, lose, or draw, our verdict is in: the Pope John Tigers are super, spectacular!! Case Closed. Look, a couple of mountain men. Sister Myrna was one of the “originals ” of Pope John, in many ways. She was a Math teacher here from the beginning in 1966 . . . and a most respected and beloved one. She moderated the Girls ’ Basketball Team for many years. . . sports were her joy and spirit was her forte. She organized and executed the yearly Ad Book ” . . . and reaped great success while shunning deserved praise. God took her swiftly, which was, we guess, better for her but oh, far too quickly for those of us who will miss her. Gris ’ Softball Team — Sen- ior Members: Liz Agnes, Lisa Sherman, and Joyce Julian. The Girls' Softbail Team, under the strong coaching of Sr. Nancy Bren- nan, had an excellent season. Tri- captains Liz Agnes (All-Scholastic All Star), Lisa Sherman, and Joyce Julian lead the team with dedication and enthusiasm to capture an im- pressive record. The CYO Cham- pionship versus Fenwick was a tough loss at 2-0. Their fine season culminated in a State Championship bid. Congratulations to one of our most successful teams ever. Senior Show Bob Conrad (what was his name??) had a difficult choice. Would it be 1. Skeeva Bel- trami, 2, Val E. Gurl or it 3. Silkv Foxworth? It was a “Dating Game ” never to be forgotten. Carla choreo- graphed the “Bombs” to Marvin Gaye’s “Sexual HealingThe same crew, plus some, also per- formed in “Private Eyes”. Rich, Joe, Bob, Steve and Co. played Jum- pin’ Jack Flash and Should I Stay or Should I Go? They were EXCELLENT. As a short subject, the Munchkins were ador- able. Have a lollipop, kid. Senior Show Our Senior Show was announced in March, and the response was enthusiastic. The original cast consisted of 98% of the class! Bp the time “rehearsals”started, though, the enthusiasm was still high, but the numbers had halved themselves. Acts practiced and disbanded . . . new ideas were constantly presenting them- selves. Finally, costumes were bought (or unearthed), a program was decided upon, and the show was a go! Our night-time audience was treated to a truly entertaining show. The audio visual crew, particularly Warren Hart, deserve so much credit . . . thank you! The film that was featured, an animation of “The Wall”, was a terrific fledgling effort by Warren, John DiPiano (who also provided these pictures), Frank, Joe, and Jerry. Mrs. Whalen prayed, and rooted from the sidelines, and was our ever faithful “director”. Thanks, Mrs. W.l Derisp and Davp ad-lihhpd thpir way through some of the slower mo- ments, They were entertaining and elegant emcees! One half of our genuinely tal- ented singing duo . . . Miss Diane Maresco. She deserved her ovations. (So did Joan Keane, but we don 7 have any pix') Despite a few technical difficulties, the Go-Gos finally got on-on. How funky are our roosters?? Take a gander!! These gorgeous, zaftig hunks of humanity stole the show!! Eileen and her stray cats were wonderful! Maria. Patty, Angela, Susan gave us all a paws” that refreshed! The Senior Prom Queen was Karen McKenzie; her court was:: Tra- cy Longo Kara Bonita, Joanne Wheeler, and Dianne Maresco. Then roses were pre- sented by Presi- dent Tom Boyle. e —
