By reaching the end of that calender, we realize that the 1980’s will be judged as a result of our future performance. We ached, but we were ready to show our stuff. Our Juniors were triumphant. We were not as successful . . . but the disappointment was assuaged by the resounding cheers for POPE JOHN,” led by team members that we had cheered for. Thank you, fans, families, friends, and most especially Sr. Jean for that happiest memory. X THE QUEEN AND HER COURT: Maureen Ricci, Ann Lenehan, Noreen Donnelly - Queen, Maureen McDonough and Susan Falvey. n; Where were you the night of the prom? I I I ■ ■ ■ ■ MOVIETONE NEWS UPDATE Our Senior year was a year of contrasts. The class of 1980 began its first semester eagariy awaiting college and bursting with hopes for the future and then was forced to graduate nine months later with fears of draft registration and the sounds of not too distant war cries. May 23, 1980, the day of our graduation, was also Day 202 of the Iranian Hostage Crisis. Late in May, the same approximate time, radioactive fluid was still seeping through Three Mile Island, and the experts were predicting a severe recession by late Summer. The Senior Class, of course, didn’t spend its whole year at Pope John bemoaning the World situation. We were able to cheer the spectacular U.S. Hockey Team in their amazing victory over the Soviets at the Lake Placid Olympics. We were more than pleased, to say the least, to see local boys Mike Eruzione, Jim Craig, Jack O’Callaghan and Dave Silk have their moment in the national spotlight. More than one Pope John female suffered from weak knees every time Eric Heiden skated across their television screens. The euphoria was quickly climaxed, however, with rumors, later proven true, that the United States would not be sending a team to the Moscow Summer games because of the Afghanistan invasion. Closer to home, 1980 saw some unexspected graduates as we Seniors completed our final year. Miss Patricia Rosvall left after nine years. Ms. Madeline Webster left after 4 years with us to try her hand at computors. Jim Jagiello left after one year, and Nan Doherty went home to New York to teach in greener pastures, (oh, by the way, Ms. Claudia Hurley didn’t have her picture appear in the yearbook, so everbody take a good look at her so you don’t forget what she looks like. Sorry Ms. Hurley.) Pope John High school endured its own personal tragedy late in the mild winter of 1980. The last thing this community expected on the morning of March 18 was to hear of the death of one of our own, Karen MacCuish, a 15 year old Sophomore. After the tears, shock and bewilderment, the student body mustered all Its strength with the personal conviction that their conduct would make that difficult time easier for Karen’s parents. None present at the resurrection mass a week later will ever forget the bravery exhibited by Mr. and Mrs. MacCuish as they celebrated Karen’s life with her friends and classmates. We sang during our Senior year. One of the more popular tunes during 1980 was Via Condios by Slim Whitman, famous singing sensation ( more popular than the Beatles ) We also traveled. During the week of April vacation, Seniors were slung all over the globe from Paris to Austria to Florida to Bermuda (pina coladas). The popular movies of 1980 were the Oscar winner Kramer vs. Kramer , The Empire Strikes Back , The Rose , Breaking Away and Being There . Television saw Edith Bunker leave All In the Family and Walter Cronkite annouce his retirment with Dan Rather replacing him. Every World crisis and fad was, of course, over shadowed by the miraculous additon of vending machines in the lower foyer and the modification of the girl’s blouses with more fashionable blouses. All this as a result of the work of the student congress. The selection of the valedictorian took a strange turn of events this year. Instead of Just one speaker, we were blessed with two. Ann Keane and Jean Fasano both had Identical A averages, and there was no way of singling just one of them. Therefore we were treated to a joint effort by Ann and Jean much to the pleasure of the graduating class. That is how our year of contrasts ended late In May of 1980. While the rest of the world seemed to be falling apart and at each other’s throats, the Pope John class of 1980 was completing a year when reason and lack of conflict prevailed. The way things are going in the adult world our stablizing influence will come none to soon. THE GRADUA TE Truly unbiased opinions!!! Although this book is dedicated to our parents, the mere fact that this book exists is a tribute to another very special person in our lives, Mrs. Nancy Whalen. Mrs. Whalen’s singular gift for compromise was her greatest contribution. She soothed hurt feelings, moderated the Great Cover Debate and molded us into one cohesive unit. We couldn’t list the untold instance in which Mrs. W. added her unique creativity and expertise to our efforts. We must simple say Thank you, Mrs. Whalen, for putting up with u r._____________________________________ Putting together a yearbook is, we imagine, much like having a baby. You work very hard for nine months to produce a beautiful and loved offspring . The labor pains are surely there, and the same questions are asked: What will it look like? and Will it be the best baby we’ve ever had? . And we know, deep down, that no one can love this baby as much as its parents. There’s always a special bond between creator and createe . On the following page are the creators of your yearbook. Please add Maureen Leahy and Tom Gaudet (our special projects man) in your mind’s eye. These people are so very important to me. Thank you is not enough, nor is You were so terrific to work with , nor is God bless you all . So, I’ll just say that as you look at these people, know that they were the most loyal bunch of kids in your class. After an exhaustive survey, we have chosen these UNBIASED opinions to publish!!!
