ACCREDITATION Pope John XXIII Central High School, Everett, became fully accredited for ten years by the New England Association of Schools and Colleges, the nation's oldest regional accrediting association, during 1975. Formal presentation of the accreditation certificate was made to Sister M. Ursula, Principal, by T. Holmes, Moore, President of the New England Association and President of the New Hampton School in New Hampshire, at the 90th Annual Meeting held at the Copley Plaza Hotel. The New England Association is the only one of the six regional accrediting associations to have all four of its constituent commissions on the list of national agencies recognized by the United States Commissioner of Education. One of the distinctive features of American education is that the development and maintenance of educational standards are the responsibilities of nongovernmental voluntary accrediting associa- tions. The New England Association serves that function. Accreditation by the New England Association followed a year of careful in-depth self-study by the school staff led by Sister Carolyn Walsh, Chairman of the Steering Committee. The self-evalu- ation report covering all aspects of the school was prepared prior to the visit of a team of educators appointed by the New England Association whose job it was to take a close and unbiased look at the institution. A school which earns accreditation can assure local citizens that it has submitted all its programs, procedures and facilities to the scrutiny of outside professional educators, and its offerings have been deemed worthwhile. Said Principal, Sister M. Ursula. The significance of the ten year accreditation is that Pope John XXIII High School has a qualified faculty, a varied and sound curric- ulum which fulfills college prepatory school requirements and an extra curricular program sufficient to provide for the academic, athletic and social needs of teenage boys and girls.”
