HORTENSE CALDWELL Secretary Acting as liaison between the school board and the citizens, the citizens and the teachers and pupils, and chief executive of the city schools, Superintendent Wayne C. Leech has a great responsibility and many duties in his job of charting a sane but pro- gressive educational course for our schools. He is assisted by his capable secretary, Mrs. Hortense Caldwell. Hortense, as she is affectionately called, not only serves as secretary, but also as bookkeeper. Her du- ties are many and varied - ranging from comforting a little first grader in tears to balancing the budget. May I use the telephone? Will you please give me some change? Have you seen Miss Thompson or Coach? These are familiar questions heard daily by these peo- ple and answered in their own friendly and courteous way.
