We see pictured here, in the 1985 QUIVER, those graduating seniors who have been part of our family at Central over these past four years. Each one of you, seniors, will soon be taking on a new role with new responsibilities. How well you, as graduates, function in your own lives and as contributing members of this community can be directly correlated to how well we educated you to think creatively and critically, to make value judgements, and to solve problems. During your years at Pontiac Central Senior High School we have offered you a multidimensional education by carefully planning your curricular and extra- curricular activities--in the classroom, in clubs and community organizations, and in athletic competitions. We can, however, only plan and implement these curricular and extra-curricular activities, it is you, the student, who shapes them by your enthusiasm to seek excellence. The vitality of this school is replenished each time a student learns a little more about himself and the world in which he lives. That vitality expands each time a student reaches higher and realizes some of his great potential. The faculty and administration of Pontiac Central Senior High School have tried over these past four years to challenge you, to encourage you, to enliven your enthusiasm, and to sharpen your intellectual curiosity. Now, as seniors who will soon be graduates, it is your new adult responsibility to challenge yourselves and enthusiastically set personal goals of excellence. Each graduating class, in its uniqueness, has made an impact on this institution. As Principal of Pontiac Central Senior High School, it is my fondest hope that our impact on you will guide you to enthusiastically seek excellence in whatever you do. In that way I know that Pontiac Central Senior High School will always remain a treasured part of your life . Dr. Russell Principal ,.........--nn. Y .MXL W7 It was with great pleasure that I returned to the responsibilities of the Eleventh Grade Class Principal As I work with the members of the Class of 86, I will continue to provide for them and all the student body the excellent educational program that is the constant goal of our outstanding faculty As I have done in the past, I shall contmue to work to improve and upgrade new and innovative academic programs. As an educator, I am constantly reminded of the recent media attention given to what is wrong with schools in America. I am heartened by what is right at Pontiac Central High School. Our students respect one another, have a strong desire to learn and are a spirited group of young men and young women who are involved in student activities and loyal to their school. My personal congratulations to Shonnese Coleman and Keith Arnold for their election to the positions of President and Vice President of the Junior Class. To the many members of the Class of '86 who have already participated in student athletics, student elections, the school Bowl-a-thon, the Homecoming Parade, and related activities, I say, Congratulations! And to the members of the Junior Class who successfully made the Principal's All A Honor Roll, the B Honor Roll, or the Perfect Attendance Lists, I say, We1l done! Mr. Osborn llth Grade Principal It is customary to describe something unique about you that may appear in this years Quiver for posterity. As I ponder the exact characterization, it strikes me that there are many things that can be written in order that we may remember: Our first assembly, planning Homecoming, the school elections, the Chief and Princess and their court, the Senior trip, the Senior Prom, the Senior Scholarship Committees, and many other highlights too numerous to mention. It is also important that you possessed qualities of ambition, fairness, inquisitiveness, and most certainly, that of being lively. Therefore, what best describes and highlights your Senior Year? I believe it has to be your planning of Homecoming Week. It was a tremendous effort and resulted in a rousing success. From the theme Let's Go Crazy to the concluding football game, you were a class group. Those of you who put not only your heart and soul but your time effort into decorations for the school and the unique Semi- Formal Homecoming Dance, the Homecoming Spirit Week Planning Committee and the excellent schedule developed, the beautiful Homecoming Float Annual plaque donated to your school for years to come, showing the leadership in the campaigning for class officers and that of Chief-Princess and their Courts, these highlights will always be remembered. I guess that this is what I'll always remember about the Class of '85. Yes, You Are Strong with Lots of Drive, I'm Proud To Have Worked With The Class of '85. To the infamous class of '85 , I congratulate you on your leadership, dedication and commitment within the Pontiac Central Family. To all the rest of the student body, I once again offer the challenge to strive for excellence in your academic achievement, attendance, and attitudes. As we reflect back on this 1984-85 school year, I hope that your memories will be amplified with the knowledge that this year was filled with dignity, respect and pride. Mr. Lee 9th Grade Principal N.. , .,. ..,. , N ... i A s , M. 7 . I 5 +5 W The Class of '87 has established an enviable record since arriving in September 1983. Its members are well represented on the three honor rolls prepared by the grade level office. In five of six marking periods during 1983-84 school year, the attendance trophy or banner was awarded to this illustrious group. They not only did well academically, but collected more pledges than any class following the Bowl-a-thon. This tradition of excellence will be continued during the 1984-85 school year. With the outstanding achievements credited to the Class of '87, we can say with pride: We're the best on Earth and Heaven. It focuses on the learner in such a way as to insure that his educational and personal development will reach its maximum. This guidance concept is not new and is inherent in all education. Education that is focused on the learner is guidance at its best. Thus will learners be aided to become responsible, self-adjusted and productive individuals. We at Pontiac Central believe that guidance is for every student in the school, and is concerned with each student's total development as well as each student's individual needs. Active support of administration, staff and community is vital to the success of the guidance program. Guidance is a function of all who educate. To date the typing program has been upgraded with with the purchase of 34 electronic typewriters, which are located in room 470 and utilized primarily with typing 32. The entire typing program has been revamped starting with the purchase of new textbooks to the upgrading of the speed requirements for all classes. The Data Processing and Accounting programs purchases are incomplete to date. Construction has begun in room 431 of a school store. The school store is to be used as part of the 2 hour block Retailing Class. The school store will sell items to the student body at Pontiac Central High School. Kirby Hoffman Business Education SHORTHAND , .'h.. CLASS 'Y Qrt lass Students see daily in the school lobbies, Media Center and Fieldhouse the creative gifts of artwork former students have dedicated to Pontiac Central Senior High School. The Art Department attempts to develop the talent and abilities of the students who select this elective class. Although the purpose of encouraging all students to explore their creative talents means that each performs to the best of his ability, emphasis is given to the quality of the work produced. Guest lecturers and field trips to art exhibits are common. Students are encouraged to enter art exhibits and art competitions, and Pontiac Central students continue to win many honors. Through these means, students have a purposeful background to pursue art as a career or as a meaningful hobby for leisure time activities in the future. Z'?.f, f' , ' , Appl fi vi Foreign languages are now more than a class that one takes for college. In many areas of employment a study in foreign languages has become a necessity especially in the business community. The Michigan State Board of Education has recommended that every high school student should take at least two years of a foreign language. The entire world has become a Global community where economic and political survival depends on rapid communication and comprehension of the various languages and cultures of the world. Here at Pontiac Central we are now offering three of the major languages of the western world: German, Spanish and French. The foreign language department has three excellent teachers: Mr. Tony Lingl, German, Mr. Mike Paquette, Spanish, and Mr. William Hoffman, French. The basic goals of the foreign language department are: Listening, Speaking, Reading and Writing in addition to the teaching of the culture of each language and opportunities for students to travel and live in the countries of the languages taught. Students have the opportunity to take as many as four years of languages if the student begins study in the ninth grade. William Hoffman Foreign Language Department Co-o Education 'v-ugh , Cooperative education in the high school is a program of instruction designed to prepare students for initial entry level jobs in retailing, office and industrial occupations. Students participating in the co-op program should have completed or be enrolled in work-related classes which run concurrent with the on-the-job experience. The student receives instruction on the job, required academic instruction and related vocational instruction in school. Students on the co-op program are released from one or two class hours and receive credit for co-op towards high school graduation. Students benefit from cooperative education programs by receiving a supervised experience to allow for a smooth transition from school to work Cooperative Education Sandy Streit as ., 1, V li , Q-.uuimtifmll .L..4-1.l-L. mana .- r et- ,,,.,.,,..........-.----. What could be better than being among students, faculty and staff who truly care about one another. For the past six years, I have worked and volunteered as parent coordinator at Pontiac Central. And, during those years, I have had the pleasure of working with many parents and community leaders, mailing our newsletters, assisting with Honors and Awards programs, Key Club activities, National Honor Society Receptions, Banquets, Mastery Learning Awards programs among others. No matter the occasion, the students always want to know what they can do to help. That's just the way our students are. I wish the world could look inside Central and see some of the greatest teachers anywhere. Things have not been very easy the past few years for teachers and students. But, our teachers stayed the course. There have been many occasions when I have asked teachers to volunteer for special activities or donate money for fund raisers. The answer is always yes. However, most of the time when I offer to do simple chores for them, they say that I am much too busy so they do it themselves. That's just the way our teachers are. Secretaries, Police Counselors, Staff Assistants, Engineers, Custodians, Cafeteria Workers, Counselors, they are all some of the best anywhere. You ask and th ' when they are not asked. The Principals are our leaders, and they lead with care and understanding. Being a parent coordinator is a very rewarding experience because I am part of the Pontiac Central High School family. A family that cares and shares. That's just the way they are: ey give. Often they give even Mrs. Groves Parent Coordinator ... . t - . For the first time, freshmen and sophomores were taking courses in world history, practical law, consumer economics, geography and social studies skills, in addition to United States history. Several students represented Pontiac Central in Washington, D. C. as participants in the Close-up program in March, and they had the opportunity to meet with government leaders. Pontiac Central was represented in April in the Youth in Government program in Lansing, where they participated in a model State Legislature and Supreme Court. Two students were named District finalists in the U. S. Senate Scholarship competition: Russell Anderson and Natasha Reed. Also, two new staff members joined the Social Studies Department. For the high schools this committee consisted of: l. Teachers from both Central and Northern. 2. Department chairpersons from both schools. 3. The Director of Science Education for Pontiac Schools. The courses of study for Biology, Chemistry and Physics were updated and rewritten to the extent that was considered necessary so that we could: 1. Provide the necessary experiences for students to be able to adequately learn the material needed to complete their high high school study of science. 2. Provide those experiences necessary for students who will be science majors to have continued success with their future science classes. 3. Provide a greater uniformity between the courses offered at the two high schools. New textbooks were reviewed and choices were made so that by l all courses in General Biology, College Prep Biology, Chemistry, Physics, and Advanced Biology should have new, updated texts. We have maintained our scope of traditional courses in science. This is expected by the colleges and universities. We are fortunate to be able to offer advanced studies as well. It is our hope for the future that the efforts of the science committee at the lower grade levels will spark a renewed interest in science at all levels so we may expand what we have to offer the student body.
